Digital Humanities, Artistic and Architecture Research, Critical Technical Practice
New forms of research, methods, knowledge
Research in applied and interdisciplinary areas often push beyond methodological and epistemological notions as articulated in established scientific disciplines - it’s therefore difficult to place these research approaches within the framework of standardised scientific methods. In order to reflect on the relation between established emerging and interdisciplinary fields of research, we will encourage new encounters by bringing together a broad spectrum of diverging and sometimes even conflicting disciplines, namely engineering, computer and natural sciences, architecture and artistic researchers. Presently, Digital Humanities for example sees itself as contributing to the research community of the Digital as well as the Humanities, by asking new, critical questions of existing algorithms and technical practices Furthermore, fields such as art and architecture understand their research as open to a variety of approaches and their findings are often considered to make contributions to multiple different areas, ranging from the technical - to the social sciences. Against this background we would like to discuss the following questions: What is the status of knowledge produced in these fields; and how might we build bridges between them and established academic disciplines? At present, it is not yet clear how knowledge created in the new and interdisciplinary fields can feed back into technical research communities. This summer school therefore aims to bring together PhD students and researchers in new forms of scientific research with the research communities in art and architecture - in particular, those artistic and architectural researchers that engage with experimental-technical development as part of their work. Attendees will be expected to be currently pursuing their own research projects, and their experiences from them will contribute to the School.
