Recent years have seen various new approaches to low-order modelling of turbulent fluid flows. These include the resolvent-based approach, Koopman/DMD modes and recurrent solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. These approaches are all related. The resolvent framework, which has roots in control theory, will be explained in some detail.
One lasting theory has proposed that the logarithmic region of the turbulent boundary layer is dominated by self-similar structures. Yet, there are no clear solutions to what these so-called attached eddies should look like.
Some modelling and scaling results will be presented for predicted eddies in the log layer.
