Speaker Prof. Samir Iqbal, University of Texas
Bio: Dr. Samir Iqbal is an Assistant Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering.  He earned his doctorate from Purdue University in 2007.  After joining University of Texas at Arlington, he established Nano-Bio Lab. His lab is focused on enhancing sensitivity and selectivity of diagnostics approaches, understanding nano-bio interface issues and faithful transduction of molecular interactions.  He is also affiliated with the Nanotechnology Research and Education Center and holds a courtesy appointment in the Bioengineering Department that is joint program with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is a senior member of IEEE, a member of Biomedical Engineering Society, American Physical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Biophysical Society.  He has published over 35 journal papers and presented at many international conferences.  He received NSF CAREER award in 2009, was named “Recognized Professor” by Phi Kappa Phi in 2011 and was a nominee for President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013.

Even after decades of research, diseases like cancer have high global burden in terms of healthcare costs and mortality rate.  Early diagnosis can result in much effective treatments and drastically improved prognosis.  We are approaching cancer diagnostics at various molecular levels and scales.  The chemical mutations (genes and proteins) result into many physical properties that have not been fully explored hitherto.  Abnormal changes in cells; shape, elasticity, growth, size and motility are all manifestations of molecular mechanisms that can be easily, economically and rapidly used for early diagnosis along with traditional histological approaches. In the cancer elimination roadmap, identification and quantification of biomarkers and tumor cells from blood drawn during yearly physical exam can be a game-changer.
