"Semantic Learning: The Empirical Pursuit of the Intangible"

Abstract

Organizational learning is one of the key topics in organization study, but because most research has mainly explored more salient forms of learning, we know surprisingly little about its more subtle forms. Furthermore, we know even less about the interplay of subtle and salient forms of learning over time. To develop insight into this important, but under-investigated domain, we conducted a 10-year life-cycle study of an organization’s subtle learning activities. We focus more on the subtle, semantically based realm by explicating how organizational transitions occurred when either key labels or the meanings of the labels associated with organizational identity underwent change. Overall, the study not only demonstrates the importance of accounting for subtle learning, but also reveals some of the important linkages between the subtle and salient realms of learning.
