"Towards a theory of Business Ecosystems"

Abstract
Given the recent surge of interest in “ecosystems” (often based on “platforms”) in strategy research, we critically investigate this literature. We consider the various conceptualizations, their common ground, and their contrasts. We examine the structure of relationships between ecosystem participants, and the degree of mutual adaptation, shape ecosystem structure and behavior, and ask what is distinct about ecosystems compared to other, existing types of work. As such, we consider the overlap of this new stream of work with established theories covering, among others, complementary assets, networks and alliances, identifying strong promise as well as pitfalls. We conclude with proposals on improving terminological clarity and consistency, and identify promising paths for future research on these topics and implications for mainstream strategy research.
