Turbulence is inherently stochastic, but not all fluctuations contribute equally: a relatively small subset exhibits correlated dynamics and accounts for a disproportionate share of transport, mixing, and noise. This talk presents a framework for identifying, interpreting, and modeling those components in a way that connects statistical description to underlying dynamics. Spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) provides a statistically optimal description of structures that evolve coherently in space and time, isolating the dynamically relevant motions embedded within turbulence. When viewed alongside resolvent analysis of the linearized Navier–Stokes equations, a more complete picture emerges: SPOD reveals what the flow does, while the resolvent framework explains why—linking observed structures to amplification mechanisms and to the nonlinear interactions that sustain them. Together, these tools expose how Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, Orr amplification, and lift-up mechanisms compete and interact across frequency and azimuthal wavenumber, illustrated here in the canonical setting of high-speed jets. Building on this interpretation, we show how resolvent models, augmented with eddy-viscosity closures, can predict dominant flow structures directly from the mean flow, offering a practical route toward reduced-order models with predictive capability. Finally, we extend the framework to time-periodic and forced flows using cyclo-stationary statistics, enabling analysis of more realistic, externally driven configurations.
\r\n ","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-04-21T11:21:29","last_modification_date":"2026-04-28T16:42:23","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"MED 0 1418","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MED%200%201418","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/"],"speaker":"Prof. Tim Colonius","organizer":"Prof. François Gallaire ","contact":"Prof. François Gallaire ","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120460/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/232/"]},{"id":71793,"title":"Model-Based Design with MathWorks","slug":"model-based-design-with-mathworks","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/model-based-design-with-mathworks","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33116/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33116/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33116/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-05-07","end_date":"2026-05-07","start_time":"11:00:00","end_time":"14:30:00","description":"
Discover the MathWorks tools available to the EPFL community at this upcoming event. In this introductory session, we present how the MathWorks toolchain supports the complete robotics workflow, from early-stage modeling and simulation to verification and deployment on real hardware. Using representative robotics use cases, we demonstrate how model-based design enables researchers and educators to systematically develop robotic systems. The presentation covers concepts such as multi-domain modeling, simulation of robotic behavior and automatic code generation of algorithms for embedded targets. The goal of the session is to provide an overview of how MATLAB® and Simulink® can be used and to raise awareness that EPFL provides the full toolchain for academic use.
\r\n
\r\nFollowing the presentation, there will be a lunch break with snacks and refreshments, during which participants can exchange ideas and ask questions. While traditional mutagenesis with the 20 canonical amino acids has enabled significant advances, its chemical scope remains limited. The incorporation of non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) into proteins has the potential to expand the chemistry accessible through mutagenesis and enable precise control through mutations that are more finely tuned than those achieved with canonical amino acid mutagenesis. However, this strategy remains underexplored. To expand this potential, we engineered new tools for the incorporation of key ncAAs and have applied these tools to demonstrate improved activity over several properties, including expanding the catalytic pH range, increasing the redox potential of metallocofactors, and accelerating the rate-limiting step of catalysis. These results establish ncAA mutagenesis as valuable tool for metalloenzyme engineering, capable of improvements inaccessible through canonical mutagenesis.
\r\n
\r\nSpeaker's biography:
\r\nAlexandria (Ali) Deliz Liang is an assistant professor at University of Zurich.
