Living systems consume energy and information to survive, grow, and reproduce. These vital dynamics occur across many scales of space and time, but the most fundamental is molecular: atoms and the bonds between them. The genetic code is written in atoms. It in turn specifies the atomic structures of proteins, biology’s energy and information processing units, which execute their functions in molecular space. Therefore, in a deep sense, atomic motion is the foundation from which life emerges. I seek to understand that motion.
\r\n
\r\nOne direct and powerful route is to film macromolecules with chemical resolution in both space (Å) and time (fs). I will describe a technology that uniquely enables us to achieve both simultaneously – the X-ray free-electron laser – and show how my team has used XFELs to watch two proteins at work.
\r\n
\r\nFirst, I will present our experiments on photolyase, an enzyme that harnesses light to repair life-threatening DNA damage. We found photolyase achieves very high repair quantum efficiency through an unexpected mechanism: by locking its photoexcited chromophore into a bent configuration. Further, photolyase achieves product/substrate specificity geometrically, using a rigid active site that matches substrate but not product. Second, I will share preliminary results on cryptochrome 4, a descendant of photolyase that has been proposed to act as an avian magnetosensor. Do birds navigate using a quantum magnetic compass? Our experimental program is investigating this provocative hypothesis.

\r\nBuilding for Time examines architecture not as a finished object, but as a material process unfolding across multiple lifespans. Drawing from ancient practices of reuse, cannibalization, and ritualized demolition, Brandon Clifford explores how past cultures anticipated the afterlives of their buildings—and what those strategies can teach us about designing structures that expect transformation, disassembly, and reuse. The lecture proposes future architectures that are conceived with their second (and third) lives already embedded in their form, material logic, and construction.

\r\nBrandon Clifford mines ancient construction techniques to envision transformative architectural futures. He is the director and co-founder of Matter Design and an associate professor of Architecture at MIT, and is known for animating megalithic structures to perform acts of construction and assembly. Clifford has pioneered projective archaeology—architecture’s version of magical realism—which blends historical practices with speculative futures to rethink material lifecycles, ceremony, and architectural afterlives. He is the author of The Cannibal’s Cookbook and a recipient of the American Academy in Rome Prize, TED Fellowship, MacDowell Fellowship, and the Architectural League Prize.
EPFL Architecture is pleased to invite you to visit the exhibition of the Master students' work until July 31 at the Rolex Learning Center.
\r\nThe exhibition is divided into three distinct areas: the first brings together projects focused on resources and craftsmanship, such as wood, earth, and self-construction; the second features projects exploring urban and territorial scales; and the third presents work on social or individual housing, as well as interventions in existing buildings, including transformation, rehabilitation, and renovation.
\r\n
\r\nThe final reviews for the 2026 master's projects will take place from July 8 to 15 at the Rolex Learning Center and are open to the public.

A summer school taking place this September will bring together EPFL and ETH Zurich PhD students to explore how uncertainty can become a productive resource in design and fabrication through a hands-on construction robotics challenge.
\r\n
\r\nThe program combines lectures in architecture, robotics, and work psychology with the full-scale construction of a timber structure from irregular timber stock, using an ABB industrial robot in a human-robot fabrication workflow.
\r\n
\r\nNo previous experience in construction robotics is required, only curiosity.
\r\n
