Just as simple models from decision theory provide context for understanding the decisions of complex humans, so too can they for complex AI systems. Bayesian decision theory considers an agent receiving a signal that is correlated with the state, choosing an action, and obtaining a payoff that depends on both the state and action. With Bayesian updating and the revelation principle, the signal becomes a posterior belief and the decision problem becomes a scoring rule. Given a scoring rule, baseline performance is the optimal score under the prior; benchmark performance is the optimal score under the posterior; and the optimal scoring rule — framed as a mechanism design problem — maximizes the difference between them. The talk reviews this theory and applies it to (a) evaluate prediction as a service, (b) behavioral experiments on human-AI decision making, (c) develop proper scoring rules for text (e.g. for training language models to hallucinate less).
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nShort bio:
\r\nProf. Hartline’s research introduces design and analysis methodologies from computer science to understand and improve outcomes of economic, legal, and AI systems. The robot must perceive a ball travelling at high speed, estimate its position and spin, predict its trajectory, decide how to respond, and execute a precise motion, all while interacting with an intelligent and unpredictable opponent.
\r\nIn this talk, I will present Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed at Sony AI that progressed from learning basic racket skills to competing with elite human players. I will discuss the complete system behind this progression: high-speed visual perception, reinforcement learning, simulation, robot control, and the iterative sim-to-real process that enabled policies trained in simulation to perform on a real robot. Beyond table tennis, ACE provides a case study in what it takes to move from impressive robotic demonstrations to robust physical intelligence. I will share some of the lessons we learned about combining learning with control, using real-world failures to improve simulation, and designing AI systems that can adapt and act under the speed, uncertainty, and constraints of the physical world.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nMireille El Gheche is a Lead Research Scientist at SoftBank Robotics, working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. This can be extended to resolve nanostructure orientation voxel-by-voxel in three dimensions in a method called SAXS tensor tomography, which we implement in our open-source software package Mumott. In this presentation, I will show how this approach, and its continued development, can be applied across different material systems.
\r\nFor injection-molded polymer packaging, SAXS imaging has resolved the layered anisotropic nanostructure important for its mechanical properties, and, combined with industrial processing simulations, the structure formation during thermal processing. Another example is bone, where resolving structure requires both three-dimensional information and sufficient sampling to capture biological variability. Combining 2D and 3D SAXS imaging, we studied regional differences in the human femoral neck, an anatomical site relevant to hip fractures, and, at higher resolution, resolved alternating chirality between neighboring lamellae within individual osteons, a structural feature proposed on mechanical grounds over a century ago.
\r\nThese examples illustrate how tensor tomography, extended beyond X-ray scattering to wide-angle diffraction and visible-light polarimetry, provides a route to resolving hierarchical structure across a wide range of material systems.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Marianne Liebi studied food science at ETH Zurich, where she also completed her PhD in 2013, followed by postdoctoral research at the Paul Scherrer Institute and MAX IV Laboratory, Lund. Traditional live-cell fluorescent probes face two critical technical challenges:\r\n
\r\n\t
How to make fluorescent probes brighter and more photostable.
\r\n\t
How to make fluorescent probes gentler to minimize the photodamage of organelles.
\r\n
\r\nBased on the fundamental principles of photochemistry and biochemistry, we have developed a new generation of live-cell imaging probes that far surpass traditional probes in brightness, photostability, and biocompatibility. These probes enable long-term super-resolution imaging of mitochondria, insulin vesicle secretion, plasma membrane dynamics, lysosomes, and more. Our representative achievements include: The PK Mito and PK Zinc dye series, widely used in mitochondrial and insulin secretion imaging. The BD series of novel fluorophores, in conjunction with self-labeling tags, offer general protein labeling strategies with superior optical properties compared to fluorescent proteins.
\r\n
\r\n==================================================
\r\n
\r\nBrief Biography:
\r\n
\r\nDr. Zhixing Chen, Associate Professor
\r\nCollege of Future Technology
\r\nPeking University
\r\n
\r\nDr. Zhixing Chen is a tenured associate professor at the College of Future Technology, Peking University. We use it as a scientific tool to study how models acquire specialized skills and how far those skills transfer. We speedrun SWE-bench by training coding agents from scratch on demonstrations from stronger models. With about $1,000 of training compute, we reach a 25% solve rate, outperforming GPT-4o. Compared to models with extensive pre-training, our speedrun models solve largely the same SWE-bench problems, and generalize about as well to new bugs and codebases. What, then, does pre-training buy for SWE-bench? Our experiments suggest a one-student hypothesis: pre-training helps a student imitate its teacher, but at matched imitation loss, pre-training choices barely matter. We stress-test this hypothesis by comparing a model trained on the web against a “vintage\" one trained only pre-1931 documents. Up to the SWE-bench scores we reach, pre-training is interchangeable with specialization data. We release nanoswe as an open project for studying specialization through speedrunning.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nRicardo Olmedo is a final-year PhD student at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen and a Google PhD Fellow. Advised by Moritz Hardt and Bernhard Schölkopf, he works on language model benchmarking and specialization. His research has earned three oral presentations at ICLR and NeurIPS. Most recently, he spent spring and summer 2026 visiting Sanmi Koyejo at Stanford University.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-10-04T16:12:34","last_modification_date":"2026-10-04T16:19:40","link_label":"Zoom Link","link_url":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/62586405912?pwd=OffU3pokqFjxl6rj6cmbrdlLEg6LKc.1","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"ELE 117","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ELE%20117","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/62586405912?pwd=OffU3pokqFjxl6rj6cmbrdlLEg6LKc.1","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Ricardo Olmedo","organizer":"EPFL AI Center and the MLO Lab","contact":"Nicolas Machado","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/122056/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=json"]},{"id":72759,"title":"Strategies in Pd-Catalyzed Carboamination of Unsaturated Bonds and Applications to the Synthesis of N-Heterocycles","slug":"strategies-in-pd-catalyzed-carboamination-of-uns-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/strategies-in-pd-catalyzed-carboamination-of-uns-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33974/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33974/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33974/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-12-04","end_date":"2026-12-04","start_time":"16:30:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Thesis Director: Prof. J.
