Chemical protein synthesis provides a powerful means to prepare novel, modified proteins with atomic-level precision, offering unprecedented opportunities to understand fundamental biological processes.1 Of particular interest is gene expression, which is controlled through interactions between transcription factors (TFs) and DNA. This presentation will highlight the power of combining total synthesis and late-stage transformations to generate complex, modified proteins for deciphering the molecular roles of post-translational modifications (PTMs) in TFs regulation. Specific examples will focus on the synthesis of site-specifically phosphorylated and acetylated TFs, such as the Myc/Max system.2, 3 Remarkably, these studies revealed that phosphorylation and acetylation patterns modulate Max–DNA interactions by altering DNA binding affinity and sequence specificity. Importantly, such mechanistic insights led to the development of novel bioactive miniproteins derived from Max (μMax), capable of inhibiting oncogene expression and cancer cell proliferation through antagonistic binding to target genes in cancer cells, paving the way for the development of new therapeutic proteins targeting oncogene expression.4-6

\r\nAbout the exhibition
\r\n
\r\nUne éducation au réel 
\r\nexplores the vast field of graphic representation in architecture through fifteen years of teaching architectural representation at EPFL at the turn of the 2000s. It presents around a hundred paintings on wood, didactic works produced between 1997 and 2007 in the teaching units of the painter Arduino Cantàfora. They suggest a possible way of making, between thought and actio, where drawing and painting structure a concept and become an essential language for expressing the founding idea of a project. Despite the transition to digital technology, the exhibition conveys the conviction that the artisanal culture of drawing and painting continues to play a fundamental and indispensable role in training architects.

\r\nI first review how these rate-independent theories can be formulated as energy minimisation problems and discuss their main properties and limitations. I then introduce a regularised fracture model, akin to the phase-field regularisation used for softening plasticity, that we recently proposed in [1]. Unlike standard gradient damage or phase-field fracture models, in this approach damage affects the material strength rather than its stiffness.
\r\n
\r\nThrough analytical and numerical examples, I show how this model, within a consistent variational framework, provides a path toward reconciling several key concepts developed over the centuries, including Griffith and cohesive crack models, damage mechanics, plasticity, strength criteria, and limit analysis.

He received his Ph.D. in Mechanics in 2005 through a joint programme between the University of Rome La Sapienza and Paris 6. \r\nAs new therapeutics have begun moving the needle for ALS patients, tracking disease progression and monitoring the effects of drug treatment have become even more important. Biomarkers are needed to stratify patient populations, understand response to therapeutics, and quantify disease progression. The foundation is soliciting proposals from multidisciplinary groups focused on the discovery and development of novel fluid or tissue-based biomarkers of disease progression and stratification using novel, innovative, and complementary approaches including applications of AI and machine learning (ML).
\r\n
\r\nAlthough all groups studying disease progression biomarkers are eligible to apply, Target ALS is particularly interested in supporting projects that propose the study of:\r\n\r\nConfidentiality of the investigator’s data, research, and intellectual property will be strictly honored.  Target ALS does not seek ownership of any intellectual property or financial gains that result from its funding.
\r\n
\r\nFunding:       $130,000 per lab per year (not to exceed a total of $500K / year)
\r\n
\r\nDuration:      24 months 
\r\n
\r\nEligibility: Only collaborative projects will be considered; collaborative projects for this call comprise groups of 3-5 laboratories working around a common research theme or target. Each consortium should have at least one investigator from the biotech/pharmaceutical industry.
\r\n
\r\nHow to Apply: The two-step application process begins with a Letter of Intent. The letter of intent can be filled in directly on the application portal, with four questions to be answered (see below for the list of questions). Selected applicants will be notified in June 2026 and invited to submit a full proposal. At the full proposal stage, a detailed budget is required. Budgets can include researcher salaries and fringe benefits, materials and consumables, equipment, and overhead of 15%.

\r\nThe research agenda has three connected aims:\r\n\r\nPreference will be given to proposals from collaborations among multiple PIs and labs. Applicants are invited to apply to either or both funding tiers (see below). Applicants may submit more than one proposal to each tier.

\r\n                        Tier 2: $1-5M

\r\nDuration:      1-3 years
\r\n
\r\nEligibility: Schmidt sciences invites individual researchers, research teams, research institutions, and multi-institution collaborations across universities, national laboratories, institutes, and non-profit research organizations. They are open globally and encourage collaborations across geographic boundaries. However, the recipient of funding must hold a 501(c)(3) designation or equivalent.

\r\nHow to Apply: Requests for proposals can be submitted via the Application Portal. You will be asked to provide Background information, a Project overview, Milestones and outcomes, Team CVs, as well as a Budget and optional computation request. Budgets should include overhead of 11.1% of total direct costs (or 10% of the total budget).
