\r\nCOST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding programme that encourages networking of scientific and technological research activities throughout Europe and beyond. The aim is to facilitate breakthrough scientific developments leading to new concepts and products. COST does not fund research but supports networking (COST Actions) via different tools such as meetings, short-term scientific exchanges, training schools and dissemination activities. COST Actions have a duration of 4 years. The deadline to submit a COST Action is usually in October. COST Actions do not cover research funding. Integration into existing COST actions is possible.
\r\n
\r\nSwitzerland is one of the founding countries of COST and a full member of the COST Association. Thanks to this status, researchers in Switzerland are entitled to participate in COST Actions or to coordinate them and submit applications for new Actions. Thus, scientists based in Switzerland are fully eligible for all COST activities and for reimbursement of their related expenses.

\r\nThe Marie Skłodovska-Curie PF European Fellowships (MSCA-PF-EF) are for postdoctoral researchers to acquire new scientific and transferable skills in the framework of a transnational research project in a European Member State or Horizon Europe associated country. The MSCA-PF-EFs can be hosted at Swiss research organisations. EPFL only participates in the MSCA-PF-EFs (participation in the MSCA-PF Global Fellowships is excluded).
\r\nEligibility, duration and Funding
\r\nResearchers within the first 8 years after obtainment of their doctoral degree and who have not lived or worked in Switzerland for more than 12 months within the last 3 years prior to the submission deadline are eligible to submit project-proposals for the duration of 12-24 months.
\r\nThe funding covers the salary of the applicant and contributes to the project related activities.

\r\nEUR 150’000 for an overall project duration of 18 months.
\r\nERC expects projects to be completed in 12 months (this should be reflected in the gantt chart of the proposal) but signs contracts for 18 months (allowing for sufficient preparation time).

\r\nThe European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS) has launched its 4th Joint Transnational Call (JTC) on the theme of “Access to care.” This call invites proposals that aim to promote equitable access to, and effective utilisation of, health and care services across Europe.

\r\nCo-funded by Horizon Europe, THCS supports research and innovation that enhance the resilience, sustainability and inclusiveness of health and care systems. The call targets projects that address inequities in access to care, develop evidence-based and scalable service models, and provide policymakers with practical tools to improve resource allocation and advance integrated care.
\r\n
\r\nConsortium Eligibility \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\nSwitzerland will participate in the call through two funding partner organisations SNSF and Innosuisse. For detailed information on each agency’s funding contribution, regulations and eligibility criteria, please refer to sections 1.30 and 1.31 of the call text document.

\r\nThere are 3 sub schemes for the MSCA DNs:\r\n\r\nDuration and Funding
\r\nThe consortium applies for a project with a duration of 4 years (exception for Joint Doctorates, duration is 5 years). The financial contribution covers the salaries of doctoral candidates for the duration of 3 years (4 years for Joint Doctorates) and research, training and networking costs covering the whole project duration. Doctoral candidates (DCs) may not have lived or worked in the country of the host organization for more than 12 months within the last 3 years prior to the employment of the DC on the project.

\r\nHow did life begin from chemistry? One leading idea is that RNA played a central role because it can act both as genetic material and as a catalyst. A major challenge has been that known RNA polymerase ribozymes, the catalysts of RNA copying, are large and complex, making them difficult to copy and unlikely to arise from prebiotic RNA sequence pools.
\r\n
\r\nIn this seminar, Edoardo Gianni will present QT45, a compact 45-nucleotide RNA polymerase ribozyme discovered from random RNA sequence pools. QT45 can catalyse the two essential reactions required for RNA self-replication: the synthesis of itself and the synthesis of its complementary strand. This work suggests that RNA-copying activity may be more common in sequence space than previously thought. It also brings us closer to understanding how self-replicating molecular systems could emerge in nature and be reconstructed in the laboratory.
