Today, we have sold over 1,000 upper-body dual-arm robots, NEXTAGE, both domestically and internationally, contributing to factory automation. I will introduce my company and the history of humanoid development at our company.
\r\n
\r\nYuichiro Kawasumi is a Chief Engineer at Kawada Technologies, Inc., specializing in humanoid software and social implementation. He began his career developing the HRP-2 series with AIST, establishing core humanoid control expertise. This led to the successful spin-out of NEXTAGE, a torso-type robot that transformed high-end research into practical factory automation. Building on this real-world success, Kawasumi recently launched a project to develop next-generation legged robots in late 2025. Returning to his roots in full-body mobility, he aims to pioneer the next era of humanoid automation to solve critical global labor shortages.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-05-19T09:04:50","last_modification_date":"2026-06-09T13:10:47","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"ME A3 31","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ME%20A3%2031","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/69010880666","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Yuichiro Kawasumi
\r\nDeputy Manager in charge of Humanoid Robot
\r\nKawada Technologies, Inc.
\r\nCore platform Laboratory
\r\n ","organizer":"EPFL Robotics","contact":"Anca Rusu","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120799/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/417/?format=json"]},{"id":71900,"title":"U.S. CDMRP – Breast Cancer Research Program | Research Funding","slug":"us-cdmrp-breast-cancer-research-program-research-5","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/us-cdmrp-breast-cancer-research-program-research-5","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33218/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33218/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33218/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-06-12","end_date":"2026-06-12","start_time":null,"end_time":null,"description":"Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), the Department of Defense is announcing the 2026 Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Awards. Several award programs are available:\r\n
\r\n\t
The Breakthrough Awards supports promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. The Breakthrough Award is structured with four different funding levels. Each level has a defined research scope :\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 1: Innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that is in the earliest stages of idea development or is an untested theory that addresses an important problem.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 2: Research that is already supported by substantial preliminary or published data and strongly validates clinical translation in a well-defined context within the breast cancer landscape.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 3: Advanced translational studies with a high degree of project readiness.
\r\n\t\t
Funding Level 4: Large-scale projects that will transform and revolutionize the clinical management and/or prevention of breast cancer. Human clinical trials are required.
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
The Clinical Research Extension Award aims to extend the data collection, follow-up, and analysis of breast cancer clinical research studies. Proposed research may entail a deeper molecular analysis of clinical samples, initiation of new correlative studies, biomarker validation, or continuing clinical follow-up of patients currently/previously enrolled in an open/ongoing or completed clinical trial.
\r\n\t
The Era of Hope Scholar Award supports individuals early in their careers who have demonstrated significant potential to effect meaningful change in breast cancer. These individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have shown that they are the “best and brightest” in their field(s)
\r\n\t
The Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award is designed to support large-scale, multidisciplinary and multi-institutional consortia that address major challenges in breast cancer through tightly integrated and collaborative research efforts. It enables up to five Principal Investigators, including a Consortium Director, to work within a coordinated framework where all project components are aligned toward a shared central hypothesis. The award specifically aims to foster innovative and paradigm-shifting approaches that go beyond the capabilities of individual laboratories, requiring strong integration across scientific, administrative, and logistical aspects, as well as the active involvement of breast cancer advocates and cross-disciplinary expertise.
\r\n\t
The Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award is intended to provide successful applicants the time and resources needed to bring investigators and breast cancer advocates together to establish a consortium framework and conduct preliminary research to support application to a future, full Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award (pending availability of funds). This is a development award and is a separate mechanism from the full consortium award. Recipients of the FY26 Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Development Award are expected to submit an application to compete for the full Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award anticipated to be offered in a future fiscal year(s).
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nAll applications must align with at least one BCRP Overarching Challenge. In this talk, I will present our recent advances in 3D single-molecule tracking of dynamics and super-resolution imaging of nanoscale structures throughout mammalian cells, and showcase applications of our approaches for cellular imaging. I will describe our developments of light sheet microscopy platforms that reduce fluorescence background, photobleaching, and the risk of photodamaging sensitive samples. Combined with point spread function (PSF) engineering for nanoscale localization of individual molecules in 3D, deep learning for analysis of overlapping emitters, and a novel 3D nanoprinted microfluidic chip for environmental control, these platforms enable whole-cell multi-target 3D single-molecule super-resolution imaging with improved accuracy, precision, and imaging speed. I will also highlight our recent developments and applications of dCas9-based labels that enable flexible, long-term tracking of endogenous, non-repetitive genomic loci in live human cells with excellent spatiotemporal resolution. Using this approach, we demonstrate correlative tracking of gene dynamics and transcription for improved understanding of gene regulation. I will further showcase studies of disease mechanisms and novel therapies for the premature aging disorder Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome. Together, these imaging technologies provide a versatile toolkit for quantitative studies of molecular dynamics, nanoscale structures, and molecular mechanisms, enabling new insights into a broad range of chemical, biological, and biomedical questions related to cellular function and pathogenesis.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Dr. Gustavsson joined the faculty at Rice University in 2020 as a CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research and the Norman Hackerman-Welch Young Investigator Chair.
