For decades, aging research has focused on the brain's own cells. But our bodies also carry a second, powerful system that changes with age: the immune system. Best known for fighting infections, the immune system also reaches into the brain and helps shape how it works. My research aims to answer a simple but underexplored question: as the immune system ages, does it stop protecting the brain and start harming it, and if so, can we intervene?
\r\n
\r\nI will share how I have used engineered proteins, delivered directly into the brain, to precisely target specific immune cells and rebalance their behavior. Building on this work, my lab is now developing a toolkit of precision tools, each aimed at a different brain immune cell type. The goal is to translate this work into \"aging immunotherapies\": treatments that restore balance to the aging immune system, strengthen the brain's resilience, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nPaloma Navarro Negredo studied Natural Sciences with an emphasis in Pharmacology at St John's College, University of Cambridge, before earning her Master's and PhD in Clinical Biochemistry, also at Cambridge. In the laboratory of Prof. Margaret S. Robinson she studied how proteins are sorted and trafficked inside cells. She then moved to Stanford University for postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Prof. Anne Brunet, supported by a Human Frontier Science Program fellowship. At Stanford she investigated changes in the aging brain, with a particular focus on immune cells and strategies to target them using engineered proteins.
\r\nPaloma is now an Assistant Professor at the School of Life Sciences at EPFL, where she leads a research group investigating how the aging immune system contributes to the decline of brain function.
\r\n
\r\n============================================
\r\nProf. Florian Schüder
\r\n
\r\nProgramming DNA for Multiplexed Super-Resolution Microscopy
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nFluorescence microscopy is one of the most widely used tools in biological research, allowing us to visualize the organization of cells and their molecular components. Over the past two decades, the development of super-resolution microscopy has revolutionized the field by making it possible to visualize structures far smaller than previously thought possible with light microscopy.
\r\nMy research combines these advanced imaging techniques with tools from DNA nanotechnology to further expand what we can see and measure inside cells. In this presentation, I will introduce recent developments in DNA-based super-resolution microscopy and show how these approaches can enable high-resolution imaging of many different molecular targets within the same sample, and discuss how these technologies can be used to address biological questions at the molecular scale.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nFlorian Schueder studied Physics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Wyss Institute at Harvard University from 2009 to 2015. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. We will ponder whether these things are only ‘tools’ to achieve a result or can still be vital places for learning.
\r\n
\r\nRecordings available on YouTube
\r\n@epflarchitectureschool
\r\n
\r\nGraphic Design
\r\nRoman Karrer & Sandi Gazic","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-08-14T16:43:45","last_modification_date":"2026-08-17T13:18:51","link_label":"Poster School Lecture Series Fall 2026","link_url":"https://go.epfl.ch/school-lecture-series-fall-2026","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Foyer SG","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room=%3DSG%20294.22&dim_floor=2&lang=fr&dim_lang=fr&tree_groups=centres_nevralgiques_grp%2Cmobilite_acces_grp%2Crestauration_et_commerces_grp%2Censeignement%2Cservices_campus_grp%2Cequipements_grp&tree_group_layers_centres_nevralgiques_grp=&tree_group_layers_mobilite_acces_grp=metro&tree_group_layers_restauration_et_commerces_grp=&tree_group_layers_enseignement=guichet_etudiants&tree_group_layers_services_campus_grp=information_epfl&tree_group_layers_equipements_grp=&baselayer_ref=grp_backgrounds&map_x=2532923&map_y=1152547&map_zoom=12","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"NP2F architects","organizer":"EPFL Architecture","contact":"EPFL Architecture","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121436/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json"]},{"id":72546,"title":"AI Sovereignty: Charting Switzerland's Path Amid US and Chinese AI Dominance","slug":"ai-sovereignty-charting-switzerland-s-path-amid-us","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/ai-sovereignty-charting-switzerland-s-path-amid-us","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33796/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33796/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33796/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-11-10","end_date":"2026-11-10","start_time":"09:30:00","end_time":"18:30:00","description":"
As the global AI landscape consolidates around US and Chinese dominance, every nation outside this duopoly faces an urgent question: how can countries retain meaningful control over a technology increasingly expected to shape their economic competitiveness, national security, and societal resilience? Join us for a hands-on morning of using and deploying the flagship model of the Swiss AI Initiative, learn first hand from the engineers and scientists working on Apertus.
\r\n
\r\nThe workshop runs from 9:30 to 12:30 at the EPFL AI Center Lounge in Lausanne. Doors open at 9:00.
\r\n
\r\nBackground: Apertus is a fully open large language model built in Switzerland, which is fully reproducible and can run on your own infrastructure. As a Foundation Model, it has already been adapted to specific contexts through post-training and fine-tuning processes. In addition to open access at all Swiss academic institutions, a growing number of Swiss and international commercial providers support Apertus for production deployment.
\r\n
\r\nThis workshop is also designed as a two-way conversation: alongside learning how to use and deploy Apertus, we want to hear how your organization is already working with AI, and where today's tools still fall short for you. We would like to hear about the languages, legal contexts, and use cases you operate in. This input will give us the opportunity to prioritize improvements for non-profit organizations on the Apertus roadmap.
\r\n
\r\nAt this workshop, you will have the chance to:\r\n

\r\n\t
See how Apertus, a fully open, Swiss-built LLM, can be deployed on your own infrastructure
\r\n\t
Get hands-on experience using the technology itself, not just a description of it
\r\n\t
Tell the team building Apertus where it's falling short for your work, and help shape where it goes next
\r\n
\r\nThe morning will include:\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
An introduction to Apertus: what it is, how it works, and why self-hosting is possible
\r\n\t
A live walkthrough of deploying Apertus on your own infrastructure
\r\n\t
Hands-on exercises applying Apertus to tasks relevant to your organization
\r\n
\r\nExact schedule will be sent to participants closer to the event.
\r\n
\r\n! REGISTRATION REQUIRED !","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-28T13:24:00","last_modification_date":"2026-09-28T13:29:08","link_label":"Registration required","link_url":"https://luma.com/k910o3e1","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"ELE 117","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ELE%20117","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"See program","organizer":"Swiss AI Initiative","contact":"Clara Meister & Oleg Lavrovsky","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121957/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=json"]},{"id":72774,"title":"EPFL Valais Wallis Health Day","slug":"epfl-valais-wallis-health-day","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/epfl-valais-wallis-health-day","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33990/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33990/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33990/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-11-10","end_date":"2026-11-10","start_time":"11:00:00","end_time":"19:00:00","description":"
Following the success of the Unil+EFPL Health Days on the Ecublens campus, the EPFL Valais Wallis campus will host its first Health Day in Sion, featuring health check-ups and tests, information booths, workshops, and an expert talk.
\r\n
\r\n11:00-14:30 – Health Check-ups &
