After decades of rapid progress in nanomaterials and sensing performance, the field now stands at a pivotal moment: the challenge is no longer whether we can detect with extraordinary sensitivity, but whether we can do so in ways that are sustainable, scalable, and globally accessible.
\r\nThis talk envisions a future in which point-of-care biosensing becomes an integral part of everyday life through the coupling of advanced nanomaterials with sustainable platforms. Paper-based substrates and environmentally friendly fabrication methods, such as inkjet printing and stamping, enable a new paradigm of decentralized manufacturing, one that supports rapid deployment during global health emergencies, continuous environmental monitoring, and personalized, wearable healthcare.
\r\nBy integrating biorecognition elements, including antibodies and nucleic-acid–based receptors such as DNA probes and aptamers with functional nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and two-dimensional materials, these biosensors achieve high sensitivity and specificity while remaining robust outside traditional laboratory settings. REASSURED-guided design, focusing on real-time connectivity, ease of use, affordability, sensitivity, specificity, rapid and user-friendly results, minimal equipment, and deliverability, ensures devices are intuitive, cost-effective, and provide actionable information in real time, often via visual or smartphone-based readouts.
\r\nSpanning applications from infectious disease surveillance and cancer diagnostics to neurodegenerative disease monitoring and water quality assessment, this work highlights a transformative shift: from isolated diagnostic tools to ubiquitous sensing ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable nanobiosensors offer a pathway toward more resilient healthcare systems, empowered communities, and a future where access to critical information is no longer constrained by infrastructure or geography.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoçi obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) working with in ion selective electrodes. Local access to specific genomic regions is facilitated by repositioning nucleosomes to enable transcription and other nuclear processes. Nucleosome positioning is primarily regulated by ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling enzymes (CRs) that belong to the Snf2-type helicase family. These enzymes disrupt histone-DNA contacts by consuming ATP. The functions of CRs can be redundant or essential, complicating their study in vivo. To address this, we employ a unique bottom-up approach, in which we reconstitute chromatin in vitro using purified proteins and a yeast genomic plasmid library. To elucidate the diverse remodeling functions of CRs, we add purified CRs in combination with various transcription factors to the in vitro reconstituted chromatin. The resulting changes in nucleosome positioning are monitored using MNase-seq. Depending on the type of CR used, we observe distinct nucleosome positioning patterns. Furthermore, we have expanded our in vitro reconstitution approach to explore the 3D genome organization of reconstituted chromatin, discovering a role for CRs in the 3D genome organization of S. cerevisiae.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-01-23T09:41:37","last_modification_date":"2026-03-10T12:18:20","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"BCH 2218","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==BCH%202218","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Elisa Oberbeckmann (University of Goettingen)","organizer":"Professeur Beat Fierz","contact":"Marie Munoz","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"CBseminar","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119413/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/14/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":71229,"title":"MechE Colloquium: Functional materials for renewable energy storage and conversion – sustainable and scalable materials design for photocatalysts and battery materials","slug":"meche-colloquium-functional-materials-for-renewabl","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/meche-colloquium-functional-materials-for-renewabl","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32590/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32590/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32590/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-04-07","end_date":"2026-04-07","start_time":"12:00:00","end_time":"13:00:00","description":"Abstract: Renewable energy conversion and storage are pressing topics in applied research today, as the use of non-fossil energy sources is essential to reduce CO2 emissions. Solar and wind energy harvesting combined with chemical energy storage in batteries or fuels, such as hydrogen, are essential processes, that need to be improved in terms of efficiency, long-term stability, scalability and sustainability. Although significant progress has been made, many proposed photo- or electrochemical devices show satisfying short-term efficiencies in the laboratory but are too cost-intensive, too unstable and/or not sustainable enough for large-scale applications [1][2]. This is often the case, because they rely on rare materials and/or they are not fabricated using scalable processes. From a material science point of view, key areas to improve dynamic processes include, of course, the bulk properties of the active materials themselves, as well as the interfaces between the active materials and the electrolyte [3].
\r\nIn this contribution concepts are presented how to improve the function of active materials in photo- or electrochemical energy applications by materials and interface design while respecting sustainability criteria. Our strategies include morphology control by scalable synthesis procedures and chemical modifications using earth-abundant and sustainable additives. These approaches are showcased in two application areas: photocatalysis for solar water-splitting and post-lithium-ion batteries. In both cases vanadium-based chemistries and low energy hydrothermal synthesis processes are used to produce devices with improved function [4,5].
\r\n[1] A. Vilanova, P. Dias, T. Lopes and A. It involves both gathering through shared customs and exclusion. Some claim that inclusive communities do not exist. Recent history shows people more often unite through exclusion than inclusion. However, communities are not sealed. Philosopher Roberto Esposito explains that community ‘is not a property or territory to defend but a void, a debt, and a gift to others’, reminding us of our otherness.
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture series explores the topic of community through architecture. How does architecture explore, define, or enable communities? Can architects collaborate directly with communities, bypassing institutional entities? How can design convey a collective experience? Seven emerging and established architectural figures respond to these questions through their work, which spans film, exhibitions, and communitarian buildings.
\r\n
\r\nSave the dates and join us on Tuesday evenings!","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-02-06T16:52:02","last_modification_date":"2026-02-09T11:15:16","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Foyer SG","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%20294.22","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"MAIO, Anna Puigjaner","organizer":"EPFL Architecture","contact":"architecture@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"school lecture series","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119612/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":71446,"title":"Contributing to community-driven open-source in the age of agentic AI: my scikit-learn experience","slug":"contributing-to-community-driven-open-source-in-th","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/contributing-to-community-driven-open-source-in-th","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32794/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32794/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32794/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-04-16","end_date":"2026-04-16","start_time":"14:00:00","end_time":"15:00:00","description":"The Keynote of the 3rd Lemanic Life Sciences Hackathon is open to the EPFL Community.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, Guillaume will go back in time 10 years ago to my personal contributions to the scikit-learn project. This presentation will highlight the power of combining total synthesis and late-stage transformations to generate complex, modified proteins for deciphering the molecular roles of post-translational modifications (PTMs) in TFs regulation. Specific examples will focus on the synthesis of site-specifically phosphorylated and acetylated TFs, such as the Myc/Max system.2, 3 Remarkably, these studies revealed that phosphorylation and acetylation patterns modulate Max–DNA interactions by altering DNA binding affinity and sequence specificity. Importantly, such mechanistic insights led to the development of novel bioactive miniproteins derived from Max (μMax), capable of inhibiting oncogene expression and cancer cell proliferation through antagonistic binding to target genes in cancer cells, paving the way for the development of new therapeutic proteins targeting oncogene expression.4-6
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n1.
