SciComm Exchange is a two-day hands-on training program dedicated to science communication and outreach.
\r\nJointly organized by the University of Lausanne (Unil) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), it offers early career researchers the opportunity to reflect on their communication and outreach practice, explore a wide variety of formats, engage with experts in the field, and develop their skills in knowledge dissemination.

\r\nOn 7 and 8 October 2026, SciComm Exchange invites PhD and postdoctoral researchers from all facultiesto explore new ways of communicating research through hands-on workshops, round-table discussions and meetings with specialists in the field. 
\r\nNew for this edition: the Video Hackathon. 
\r\nOver two days, a group of participants will be guided by audiovisual professionals to create short videos centered on a key question: why do we communicatescience, and to whom?

Since 2006, the Erna Hamburger Prize is awarded by the EPFL-WISH Foundation (Women In Science and Humanities) and distinguishes influential, leading women scientists who are transforming their field and executing change.

\r\nIt's 2026, and the answer to every problem today seems to be a multiple choice exercise of selecting answers from: AI, Agents, LLMs or machine learning. Is our future really just all about prompt engineering?
\r\n
\r\nAt a time when artificial intelligence, autonomous agents and large language models seem to be presented as the answer to every challenge, Margo Seltzer offers a thought-provoking perspective on the value of simplicity in computer science and machine learning. She will demonstrate how simpler and more transparent approaches can deliver performance comparable to that of the most sophisticated models, while providing greater interpretability, more efficient use of resources and a more natural way of addressing issues of fairness and privacy. The lecture will also explore a theme that lies at the heart of her career: collaboration. Drawing on her own experience of collaborative research, Margo Seltzer will explain how working together can broaden one’s impact, help overcome imposter syndrome, and enable individuals to discover and develop their unique strengths.

\r\nAbout Prof. Margo Seltzer
\r\nProf. Margo Seltzer is Co-Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), where she moved after two decades as a Full Professor at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1992 from the University of California, Berkeley. A pioneering computer systems researcher, she is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors, including the 2023 ACM Athena Lecturer Award and the USENIX Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Alongside her academic career, Margo Seltzer is an entrepreneur: she co-founded Sleepycat Software, maker of Berkeley DB, a widely used embedded database engine later acquired by Oracle. A recognized leader in her field, she is also a devoted mentor to young women in computer science and founded the \"Systers Lunch,\" the original diversity gathering at SOSP, the flagship conference of the systems research community.

Ten years ago, EPFL's Laboratory of Urbanism proposed horizontality as a critical lens for urban theory and practice. Since then, the concept has grown substantially richer through theoretical traditions developed across Europe and beyond.
\r\nThis year's seminar revisits horizontality not as a closed paradigm, but as a mode of critical engagement with the socio-political, ecological, and economic processes of urbanization. It is approached as a historical, ideological, conceptual, and political question — one intersecting with territorial redistribution, accessibility, solidarity, and spatial justice amid deep socio-ecological transformation. Neither purely top-down nor bottom-up, horizontality invites reflection on spatial organization, territorial governance, and the conflicts shaping contemporary urbanization.
\r\nRather than repeating critiques of vertical power and growth-oriented urbanization, the seminar aims to pluralize perspectives on horizontality as an open concept — one capable of generating new rationalities and spatial imaginaries for future design and socio-political agendas.

Thanks to a donation from the Claude Latour Foundation, the Pôle Culture (VPI) is organizing a master class followed by a public concert based on the Verbier Festival archives, which are being digitized at EPFL by the EPFL Cultural Heritage & Conservation Platform (CHC).

\r\nDuring the masterclass, the selected students are invited to create a musical piece lasting no more than 5 minutes in the style, aesthetic, and genre of their choice (jazz, rap, rock, metal, classical, etc.). At the end of the day, the pieces will be presented to the public, accompanied by comments from a panel of experts.

\r\nThe Verbier Festival is opening its archives and making audio tracks from classical music concerts available. Participants will be able to transform, reinterpret, and reinvent these tracks to create a personal, original 5-minute piece in any musical style.

\r\nEPFL CHC and the Verbier Festival:
\r\nThe EPFL Cultural Heritage Conservation Platform (CHC) was established at EPFL in 2010 under the name “Metamedia Center.” For the past 16 years, it has pursued a dual mission: to digitize and preserve audiovisual collections and heritage of major significance in Switzerland and around the world, and to enrich and bring them to life through research and innovation projects conducted in EPFL’s laboratories, startups, and in collaboration with EPFL partners. The collections thus assembled become true research infrastructures: they provide a unique resource for education and research, accessible to students as well as to innovation communities at EPFL and around the world.
\r\n
\r\nIt was with this goal in mind that EPFL and the Verbier Festival launched the Verbier Festival Collection project in 2021. The project aims to preserve and promote the festival’s heritage, with the goal of rekindling younger generations’ interest in classical music.
\r\n
\r\nA pioneer since 1994, the Verbier Festival is the first festival in the world to have recorded all of its concerts. This exceptional collection now includes 3,000 hours of audio recordings, more than 1,000 hours of video, 12,000 historical photographs, archival documents, and a collection of annotated sheet music. It serves as a unique resource for research, innovation, and cultural transmission. As part of this collaboration, EPFL students are invited—upon registration and following a selection process—to participate in a master class during which they will draw on part of this heritage to create a musical work, which they will then present to an audience and a jury.

The 2026 Flagship call by Innosuisse and armasuisse supports research and innovation in security and defence, with a focus on dual-use technologies that benefit both civilian and defence applications.

\r\nThe 2026 call focuses on three complementary technology areas critical to defence and secure mobility:\r\n

\r\nDual-use requirement: Flagship proposals must target innovations with clear civilian and defence applications. Projects with only civilian or only defence objectives are not eligible. Applicants must demonstrate the dual-use character in their (pre-)proposal.

\r\nEligibility Checklist:\r\n\r\n\r\nMandatory Pre-Proposal Content:\r\n\r\n\r\nKey Dates:\r\n\r\n\r\nEPFL members initiating collaborations and partnerships should follow the GEP Guidelines.
