But Hawking radiation has never been observed in astronomy, only in laboratory analogues and the chances of ever observing it in space are astronomically small. The energy of Hawking radiation must come from the gravitational field around the black hole, but how field quanta generate Hawking quanta has been unknown. In this talk I report on experimental and theoretical evidence for the process that generates Hawking radiation in a fibre-optical analogue of the event horizon. There, as in gravity, it has been believed that Hawking radiation comes from a complicated, cascaded process, but we have found a simple, direct process and measured its backreaction on the field. Our findings suggest an equally direct process for other laboratory analogues and perhaps also for gravitational fields, shedding light on how black holes might radiate.
\r\n
\r\nBIO:
\r\nUlf Leonhardt joined the Weizmann Institute of Science as Professor of Physics in November 2012 after an international career. Climate, ecosystems, agriculture, and food systems determine not only which biomass resources emerge across regions, but also the biological architectures and material opportunities they embody. In this presentation, biological matter is explored as a materials platform spanning plant tissues, fungal networks, marine organisms, and biomass-derived colloidal systems, with emphasis placed on how the organization and composition of such natural precursors can guide their engineering into sustainable material systems.
\r\nThemes of (i) biofabrication, using microbial precursors to generate guided assemblies across scales, (ii) natural fiber and bio-colloidal systems, considering their isolation and assembly into functional materials, and (iii) ecosystem integration, considering opportunities to address climatic and other environmental challenges, will be covered. Regarding the latter, examples including arid soil restoration, marine infrastructure remediation, and hybrid living materials are presented as case studies toward deployable systems. For bio-colloidal systems, their inherent advantages and limitations relative to synthetic colloidal systems will also be discussed.
\r\nUltimately, introducing sustainability into the material sector extends beyond precursor selection alone, as ecosystem integration and supply-chain considerations become increasingly critical – particularly as the regionalization of biomass circularization gains importance. The seminar concludes with a brief perspective on technology transfer and innovation as extensions of scientific research toward broader societal impact.
\r\n
\r\nDr. Blaise Tardy joined Khalifa University in January 2022 as an Assistant Professor. In this talk, I will first discuss strategies that can be exploited to drive particles to the interface. Thereafter, rules for the designing Pickering emulsions and their printability will be discussed. In particular, we will focus on hetero-aggregation-driven particle adsorption to fluid interfaces, which is crucial for to ensure stability of Pickering emulsions. By controlling particle interactions through parameters such as pH and particle concentration, the microstructure and rheological properties of PEs can be tailored to achieve excellent printability and shape retention during direct ink writing. Thereafter, printable PEs are used to fabricate three-dimensional architectures that are subsequently dried and sintered to obtain hierarchically porous ceramics. The resulting porous structures are characterized in terms of their microstructure, pore size, and porosity. As a demonstration, the porous ceramics are employed as supports for gold nanoparticles and evaluated in the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The proposed approach provides a simple, scalable, and versatile framework for designing 3D-printable Pickering emulsions and developing functional porous materials for diverse applications.
\r\nKEYWORDS: 3D Printing, Pickering Emulsions, Porous Materials, Catalyst Support
\r\nReferences:\r\n

\r\n\t
Nithin Madhavan, Manas Mukherjee, Madivala G. High-resolution quantitative measurements of the oligomeric organization of membrane proteins in native membranes, and how they change under different conditions, are indispensable for understanding membrane protein biology. Her lab reported a single-molecule technique, Native-nanoBleach, to determine the oligomeric distribution of membrane proteins from native membranes at ~10 nm spatial resolution and at endogenous levels of expression. They applied Native-nanoBleach to quantify the oligomerization status of structurally and functionally diverse membrane proteins. Her team has now extended this general technique to organellar membrane proteins and membrane contact sites in the context of neurodegeneration and rare developmental diseases. This general experimental pipeline will usher in a new era of studying membrane protein organization in their native membrane environments under various physiological and clinical conditions.
\r\n \r\n
Bio:
\r\nMoitrayee Bhattacharyya received her Ph.D. in Computational Biophysics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where she used molecular dynamics simulations and network theory to study allosteric communication in protein complexes. She transitioned into experimental biology during her postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley, as a Human Frontiers Science Program Long Term Fellow. Here, she used structural biology and single-molecule microscopy to study the molecular mechanism of regulation in a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase that is critical for learning and memory. She started her lab at Yale University in the summer of 2020. One focus is to develop broad-impact technological platforms that enable high-resolution studies of membrane proteins in native membranes, in her lab and beyond. Her lab also applies these technologies in conjunction with established biophysical and structural methods to understand the molecular mechanisms of membrane-localized signaling in chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-05-08T14:43:44","last_modification_date":"2026-06-01T11:16:37","link_label":"","link_url":"https://medicine.yale.edu/profile/moitrayee-bhattacharyya/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/69374409365?pwd=qEF2fOu7AuH3ND5LAoRLrPX5bzoVYo.1","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Moitrayee Bhattacharyya, Ph.D., Department of Pharmacology, Yale University School of Medicine ","organizer":"Prof. Florian Schueder, Schueder Lab – Molecular Spatial Omics","contact":"Prof. Florian Schueder","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120702/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":71933,"title":"Controlling and Guiding Generative Models for Three-Dimensional Shape Optimization","slug":"controlling-and-guiding-generative-models-for-thre","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/controlling-and-guiding-generative-models-for-thre","visual_url":null,"visual_large_url":null,"visual_maxsize_url":null,"lang":"en","start_date":"2026-07-07","end_date":"2026-07-07","start_time":"11:00:00","end_time":"13:00:00","description":"EDIC candidacy exam
\r\nExam president: Prof. Martin Rajman
\r\nThesis advisor: Prof. Pascal Fua
\r\nCo-examiner: Prof. Mark Pauly
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nOptimizing 3D shapes within the latent spaces of deep generative models is fundamental to computer assisted engineering, yet remains prone to a critical failure mode we term manifold drift: the tendency of gradient-based optimization to move latent vectors away from the manifold of valid shapes. This problem is exacerbated in state-of-the-art 3D shape generative models that operate in increasingly high-dimensional latent spaces where valid shapes occupy a vanishingly small fraction of the full space. Existing mitigation strategies, including latent regularization and flow-matching approaches, either sacrifice expressiveness, demand a difficult trade-off between objective guidance and generative fidelity that remains prone to manifold drift, or are computationally infeasible to scale to modern, large-capacity 3D shape models. We introduce a novel optimizer-corrector framework that alternates between gradient steps for objective minimization and guided flow matching to drive the latent state back to the valid shape manifold. By decoupling objective minimization from flow-based correction, optimizing freely and correcting strictly, this alternating design avoids inherent trade-offs, preserving geometric validity without sacrificing expressiveness while remaining computationally feasible on modern 3D shape models. We demonstrate its effectiveness across generative priors of varying complexity, from simple vector latent spaces to large-scale architectures across a variety of downstream optimization tasks, including aerodynamic drag reduction and object compliance optimization.
\r\n
\r\nSelected papers
\r\n ","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-05-22T13:14:54","last_modification_date":"2026-05-22T13:14:54","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"BC 333","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==BC%20333","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":[],"speaker":"Emilien Seiler","organizer":"","contact":"edic@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"EDIC candidacy exam","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120840/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/48/?format=json"]}]}
