\r\nEngineering Precision Immunotherapies for the Aging Brain
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nAs we age, our brains slowly change memory can falter, thinking can slow, and the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's rises. For decades, aging research has focused on the brain's own cells. But our bodies also carry a second, powerful system that changes with age: the immune system. Best known for fighting infections, the immune system also reaches into the brain and helps shape how it works. My research aims to answer a simple but underexplored question: as the immune system ages, does it stop protecting the brain and start harming it, and if so, can we intervene?
\r\n
\r\nI will share how I have used engineered proteins, delivered directly into the brain, to precisely target specific immune cells and rebalance their behavior. Building on this work, my lab is now developing a toolkit of precision tools, each aimed at a different brain immune cell type. The goal is to translate this work into \"aging immunotherapies\": treatments that restore balance to the aging immune system, strengthen the brain's resilience, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease.

\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nPaloma Navarro Negredo studied Natural Sciences with an emphasis in Pharmacology at St John's College, University of Cambridge, before earning her Master's and PhD in Clinical Biochemistry, also at Cambridge. In the laboratory of Prof. Margaret S. Robinson she studied how proteins are sorted and trafficked inside cells. She then moved to Stanford University for postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Prof. Anne Brunet, supported by a Human Frontier Science Program fellowship. At Stanford she investigated changes in the aging brain, with a particular focus on immune cells and strategies to target them using engineered proteins.
\r\nPaloma is now an Assistant Professor at the School of Life Sciences at EPFL, where she leads a research group investigating how the aging immune system contributes to the decline of brain function.

\r\nProgramming DNA for Multiplexed Super-Resolution Microscopy
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nFluorescence microscopy is one of the most widely used tools in biological research, allowing us to visualize the organization of cells and their molecular components. Over the past two decades, the development of super-resolution microscopy has revolutionized the field by making it possible to visualize structures far smaller than previously thought possible with light microscopy.
\r\nMy research combines these advanced imaging techniques with tools from DNA nanotechnology to further expand what we can see and measure inside cells. In this presentation, I will introduce recent developments in DNA-based super-resolution microscopy and show how these approaches can enable high-resolution imaging of many different molecular targets within the same sample, and discuss how these technologies can be used to address biological questions at the molecular scale.

\r\nAbout the speaker
\r\nFlorian Schueder studied Physics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Wyss Institute at Harvard University from 2009 to 2015. He then pursued a Ph.D. in Biophysics at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry from 2015 to 2020. From 2021 to 2025, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Cell Biology and the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis at Yale School of Medicine. In 2025, he was a Visiting Scientist at ETH Zurich. \r\nInformation Days - Architecture Section SAR
\r\nThis event is aimed at Swiss high school students, vocational schools offering a diploma, and international students. The Information Days include one day of presentations followed by one day of workshops. The architecture presentation (Novembre 18 and 19) covers key aspects of the architect profession and the foundations of the program. Career opportunities are also discussed, with questions answered by students from the architecture department. During the architecture workshop, emphasis is placed on practical learning. It includes a concrete exercise focused on observation and representation of spatial concepts, followed by group discussions in the afternoon.

The 2026 Flagship call by Innosuisse and armasuisse supports research and innovation in security and defence, with a focus on dual-use technologies that benefit both civilian and defence applications.

\r\nThe 2026 call focuses on three complementary technology areas critical to defence and secure mobility:\r\n

\r\nDual-use requirement: Flagship proposals must target innovations with clear civilian and defence applications. Projects with only civilian or only defence objectives are not eligible. Applicants must demonstrate the dual-use character in their (pre-)proposal.

The Innovate Cities & Infrastructure programme supports project-based research between researchers and practice partners to develop innovative solutions for sustainable urban development and resilient infrastructure.

\r\nIt is a collaboration between the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and ETH Zurich, with three objectives:  \r\n

  1. developing research-informed urban technologies, strategies and policies

  2. empowering institutions to deliver effective services
    3. \r\n\t
  3. facilitating bilateral knowledge transfer between researchers and practitioners.

\r\nProjects are conducted by consortia of ETH-Domain researchers and practice partners in eligible countries,  fostering co-creation, practical application, scalability, and lasting
\r\nlocal impact.

\r\nResearch Grants: Competitive Call for Proposals
\r\nResearch projects are selected through a competitive Call for Proposal process. Applications are made by the ETH domain researcher together with the practice partner(s). Consortia can apply for two different types of grants:\r\n\r\n

  1. Urban Research Grants (Max. 24months, up to CHF 350,000): Supports collaborative project-based research between researchers at institutions in the ETH-Domain and practice partners from eligible countries to develop effective solutions to urban development and infrastructure challenges.

  2. Urban Pilot Grants (Max.12 months, up to CHF 30,000): Supports initial ideation to explore, prepare or design new collaborations and pilot a new applied research project with practice partners from eligible countries.

\r\nThis program explores the entire development process of therapeutic interventions, from initial planning all the way to commercialization, allowing our participants to deepen their expertise. They also learn the leadership qualities and management tools required to lead multi-disciplinary projects in Biotech, Medtech and Pharma ventures.
