This talk explores breakthroughs in material design and architecture leveraging OMIECs for highly sensitive, low-power applications like organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). As an example, I will present the structure-property relationships enabling dual transport and introduce a side-chain engineering approach using perylene diimide trimers (hPDI). This transformation enhances both ionic and electronic conductivity, enabling stable, high-transconductance n-type OECTs.  Another example that will be discussed is conjugated polyelectrolytes, in particular PCPDTBTSO3-K, or commonly known as CPE-K. This conjugated polyelectrolyte exhibits two-way coupling of ionic and electronic conductivity, which allows for reversible electrochemical doping, enabling dual-mode transistors and high-performance solid-state supercapacitors. I will also demonstrate that OMIECs provide a promising platform for unconventional flexible substrates. Using wet-chemical processing, we can pattern active channels on flexible polyimide or low-cost PCB substrates for dense biosensing arrays. Finally, I will highlight a pathway toward \"green,\" self-powered wearable electronics combining molecular semiconductor advances with flexible processing techniques.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Dr. Nguyen Dang Tung is an Assistant Professor at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at VinUniversity and serves as the Director of Career Service and Industry for the College. Since joining the university in August 2023, he has led the Integrated Electronics group (https://www.intorlab.com.vn), which develops devices and manufacturing technologies using organic materials to address environmental and societal challenges. Currently, the group focuses on developing multifunctional fibers and organic electrochemical devices. Notably, the group established the first thermal drawing tower for research in Vietnam and is pioneering the use of AI for materials research. Prior to VinUniversity, Dr. Nguyen-Dang studied and worked at Ecole Polytechnique of Paris (B.A. and M.Sc. in Materials Science), EPFL (PhD, Materials Science), Saint-Gobain Company (Research Engineer) and UCSB (in CPOS). His major scientific contributions include a method for creating micro- and nano-patterns on fibers and textiles, a framework for the conservation of shape during the design of functional fibers (at EPFL), and the development of the first dual-mode organic transistors—realized 50 years after the invention of their inorganic counterparts (at UCSB). For his research, Dr. Nguyen-Dang has received E-MRS Student Award (France), SNSF Fellowship (Switzerland) and Otis Williams Fellowship (U.S.A.)<br>\r\n <br>\r\n<strong>VinUniversity</strong> (https://vinuni.edu.vn) is an English-medium, non-profit university located in Hanoi, Vietnam. These advantages stem from organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) that enable simultaneous transport of electronic charges and ionic species, which can be direct processed via electropolymerization. This technique offers precise control over polymer film thickness and morphology, facilitating the formation of nanostructures and enabling selective patterning on individual channels without complex photolithography, simplifying OECT fabrication and integration. In this talk, I will discuss the performance of OECTs using various electropolymerized channel materials, starting with PEDOT for dopamine detection, followed PEDOT:N3, a clickable OMIEC variant whose threshold voltage can be finely tuned through control of the electropolymerization parameters, and finally P-tri-DPA for zinc ion detection, achieving low limits of detection and high specificity for Zn²⁺ ions. We uncovered a new mechanism for coincidence detection in the Drosophila head direction network. To maintain an accurate sense of direction, head direction neurons that signal orientation during navigation must learn to anchor to relevant external sensory cues in novel environments. Yet the synaptic mechanism for this form of unsupervised learning is unknown in any organism. In Drosophila, GABAergic visual inputs converge onto head direction neurons, and these inhibitory synapses change strength with experience to learn the relationship between visual landmarks and head direction. However, how coincident pre- and postsynaptic activity is detected across this inhibitory synapse is not understood. We discovered that neurons which release the monoamine octopamine close a feedback loop that conveys postsynaptic head direction activity onto presynaptic terminals of visual inputs. This octopamine pathway is required for anchoring the head direction network to visual cues. Furthermore, pairing structured activation of octopamine neurons with a visual cue is sufficient to drive rapid plasticity, even without postsynaptic head direction cell activity. Previous work has extensively characterized coincidence detection mechanisms at excitatory synapses; our work defines a novel mechanism for coincidence detection at an inhibitory synapse, in which postsynaptic activity is relayed via a neuromodulatory neuron onto presynaptic terminals.<br>\r\n </p>","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-01-21T16:26:07","last_modification_date":"2026-02-16T13:34:30","link_label":"Web Page","link_url":"https://vcresearch.berkeley.edu/faculty/yvette-fisher","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/64813563657","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Yvette Fisher, UC Berkeley","organizer":"SV BMI Host: Pavan Ramdya","contact":"brain_mind@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119404/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/19/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/88/?format=json"]},{"id":71936,"title":"Understanding and Predicting the Membrane Permeability of Macrocyclic Peptides Based on Large-Scale Data","slug":"understanding-and-predicting-the-membrane-permeabi","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/understanding-and-predicting-the-membrane-permeabi","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33247/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33247/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33247/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-09-15","end_date":"2026-09-15","start_time":"16:15:00","end_time":"17:15:00","description":"<p>Macrocyclic peptides are promising molecules for targeting intracellular protein–protein interactions and other challenging biological targets.
