In C. elegans, a compact nervous system enables brain-wide imaging in behaving animals exposed to controlled olfactory environments, and undulatory locomotion reduces navigation to transitions among forward runs, reversals, and turns. Here, we used brain-wide tracking microscopy to record neural activity in freely crawling worms navigating spatial odor gradients or isotropic environments, and in immobilized worms responding to temporal odor pulses. Across conditions, we identified strongly correlated brain-wide activity patterns spanning olfactory sensory neurons, interneurons, and premotor neurons. Motor-state transitions and brain-wide correlation structure differed between freely moving and immobilized animals, demonstrating that olfactory sensory representations depend jointly on sensory input, motor activity, and behavioral context. Together, these findings show that brain-wide representations of olfactory behavior are extensively reconfigured by sensory input, self-motion, and behavioral context.
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-05-21T13:36:09","last_modification_date":"2026-05-21T13:36:09","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"GA 3 21","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==GA%203%2021","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Prof. Aravinthan Samuel <samuel@g.harvard.edu>\r\n\r\nDepartment of Physics & Center for Brain Science, Harvard University","organizer":"Prof. Sahand Jamal Rahi <sahand.rahi@epfl.ch>\r\n\r\nJohanni Brea <johanni.brea@epfl.ch>","contact":"Prof. Sahand Jamal Rahi <sahand.rahi@epfl.ch>\r\n\r\nJohanni Brea <johanni.brea@epfl.ch>","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120823/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=json"]},{"id":71557,"title":"Journée Georges de Rham","slug":"journee-georges-de-rham-3","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/journee-georges-de-rham-3","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32981/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32981/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32981/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-06-03","end_date":"2026-06-03","start_time":"15:00:00","end_time":"17:30:00","description":"
The 2026 Journée Georges de Rham will take place on Wednesday 03 June 2026 in the Polydôme at EPFL, from 15:00 to 17:30 followed by an apéritif.
\r\n
\r\nProfessor Wang will deliver a talk titled “Kakeya sets in R^3″. High-resolution quantitative measurements of the oligomeric organization of membrane proteins in native membranes, and how they change under different conditions, are indispensable for understanding membrane protein biology. Her lab reported a single-molecule technique, Native-nanoBleach, to determine the oligomeric distribution of membrane proteins from native membranes at ~10 nm spatial resolution and at endogenous levels of expression. They applied Native-nanoBleach to quantify the oligomerization status of structurally and functionally diverse membrane proteins. Her team has now extended this general technique to organellar membrane proteins and membrane contact sites in the context of neurodegeneration and rare developmental diseases. This general experimental pipeline will usher in a new era of studying membrane protein organization in their native membrane environments under various physiological and clinical conditions.
\r\n \r\n
Bio: Moitrayee Bhattacharyya received her Ph.D. in Computational Biophysics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where she used molecular dynamics simulations and network theory to study allosteric communication in protein complexes. She transitioned into experimental biology during her postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley, as a Human Frontiers Science Program Long Term Fellow. Here, she used structural biology and single-molecule microscopy to study the molecular mechanism of regulation in a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase that is critical for learning and memory. She started her lab at Yale University in the summer of 2020. One focus is to develop broad-impact technological platforms that enable high-resolution studies of membrane proteins in native membranes, in her lab and beyond. Her lab also applies these technologies in conjunction with established biophysical and structural methods to understand the molecular mechanisms of membrane-localized signaling in chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-05-08T14:43:44","last_modification_date":"2026-05-11T09:28:30","link_label":"","link_url":"https://medicine.yale.edu/profile/moitrayee-bhattacharyya/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Conference room SV.1717","url_place_and_room":"https://www.epfl.ch/schools/sv/it/sv-rooms/#SV1717","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Moitrayee Bhattacharyya, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Yale University School of Medicine ","organizer":"Institute of Bioengineering, EPFL","contact":"Prof. Florian Schueder","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120702/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=json"]},{"id":71903,"title":"Computer-aided proofs in first-order optimization, with applications to error feedback","slug":"computer-aided-proofs-in-first-order-optimization","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/computer-aided-proofs-in-first-order-optimization","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33221/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33221/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33221/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-05-29","end_date":"2026-05-29","start_time":"15:15:00","end_time":"16:15:00","description":"
First-order methods are widely used in optimization and machine learning, and their behavior is often analyzed through the spectrum of worst case convergence rates. Obtaining such guarantees is often difficult and both time consuming and error-prone. Starting with the work of Drori and Teboulle (2014), novel techniques have been used to gain numerical insights, leading to the release of various performance estimation (PE) software.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will show how various computer-aided techniques can be used to study first-order optimization methods in a systematic way. From performance estimation problems with automated Lyapunov discovery, to symbolic regression and computer algebra systems, novel tools completely reshape the way we approach theory of optimization.
\r\nAs a main example, I will focus on error feedback methods used with compressed communication in distributed optimization. While error feedback has been widely studied, existing theory often provides untight (thus unreliable) bounds. I will present tight analyses with matching lower bounds that allow a fair comparison between error feedback schemes and standard compressed gradient descent, and help explain when error feedback is useful and when it is not.
\r\n
\r\nOverall, the talk aims to show how various computer-aided proofs can lead to clearer and more reliable insights into first-order optimization methods.
\r\n
\r\nBased on :
\r\nA Tight Theory of Error Feedback Algorithms in Distributed Optimization, DB Thomsen, A Taylor, A Dieuleveut
\r\nInternational Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2026)
\r\nTight analyses of first-order methods with error feedback, DB Thomsen, A Taylor, A Dieuleveut
\r\nAdvances in Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) (2025).
\r\nPEPit: computer-assisted worst-case analyses of first-order optimization methods in Python
\r\nB Goujaud, C Moucer, F Glineur, JM Hendrickx, AB Taylor, A Dieuleveut
\r\nMathematical Programming Computation 16 (3), 337-367 (2024)
\r\n(eventually -
