After decades of rapid progress in nanomaterials and sensing performance, the field now stands at a pivotal moment: the challenge is no longer whether we can detect with extraordinary sensitivity, but whether we can do so in ways that are sustainable, scalable, and globally accessible.
\r\nThis talk envisions a future in which point-of-care biosensing becomes an integral part of everyday life through the coupling of advanced nanomaterials with sustainable platforms. Paper-based substrates and environmentally friendly fabrication methods, such as inkjet printing and stamping, enable a new paradigm of decentralized manufacturing, one that supports rapid deployment during global health emergencies, continuous environmental monitoring, and personalized, wearable healthcare.
\r\nBy integrating biorecognition elements, including antibodies and nucleic-acid–based receptors such as DNA probes and aptamers with functional nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and two-dimensional materials, these biosensors achieve high sensitivity and specificity while remaining robust outside traditional laboratory settings. REASSURED-guided design, focusing on real-time connectivity, ease of use, affordability, sensitivity, specificity, rapid and user-friendly results, minimal equipment, and deliverability, ensures devices are intuitive, cost-effective, and provide actionable information in real time, often via visual or smartphone-based readouts.
\r\nSpanning applications from infectious disease surveillance and cancer diagnostics to neurodegenerative disease monitoring and water quality assessment, this work highlights a transformative shift: from isolated diagnostic tools to ubiquitous sensing ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable nanobiosensors offer a pathway toward more resilient healthcare systems, empowered communities, and a future where access to critical information is no longer constrained by infrastructure or geography.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoçi obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) working with in ion selective electrodes. Reflecting the growing importance of mathematics in life sciences research, such reform should bridge the gap between the mathematics students learn and the mathematics used in research.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, Steve Bennoun, UCLA, will present how the study of modeling and dynamical systems can be used to create a first-year course that introduces mathematical concepts used in life sciences research in a contextualized way.
\r\n
\r\nStudents first learn to write models for important biological systems such as hormone levels, epidemiological models, and predator-prey models.
\r\n
\r\nTaking a geometrical approach, students learn how to determine the long-term behaviors of models by studying phase plane trajectories and the stability of equilibrium points.
\r\n
\r\nThis enables the study of the concept of “biological switch” or how a cell can start or stop the production of a protein. This is followed by the important notion of qualitative change in a biological systems, or bifurcation.
\r\n
\r\nStudents learn in particular about Hopf bifurcations or how a system can start or stop oscillating. The second part of the course moves somewhat away from the geometrical approach and focuses on how to determine the stability of equilibrium points using the linearization of a model, motivating the study of the necessary notions from linear algebra by studying discrete-time models.
\r\n
\r\nThis talk will end with a discussion focusing on research by Sanders et al. (2021) suggesting that such a course supports students success and can reduce equity gaps.
\r\n
\r\n- - - - - - - - - - - - -
\r\n
\r\nlunch&LEARN sessions are intended for anyone who teaches at EPFL.
\r\nThis session is hybrid and can be attended in person or followed via zoom.
\r\nMost sessions are recorded and can be found on the Center LEARN's YouTube channel.
\r\nTo get in touch with the team, to suggest a session, or to make inquiries, please send an email to lunchLEARN@groupes.epfl.ch
","image_description":"lunch&LEARN flyer for Steven Bennoun's talk","creation_date":"2026-03-26T09:31:18","last_modification_date":"2026-03-31T10:04:59","link_label":"Register/Access zoom","link_url":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/M8aJRgrLR6SAGywAeyUtfA","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"CM 1 517","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%20517","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/M8aJRgrLR6SAGywAeyUtfA","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Steve Bennoun","organizer":"Center LEARN, Institute of Mathematics – MATH","contact":"lunchLEARN@groupes.epfl.ch","is_internal":"True","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"lunch&LEARN, Center LEARN, teaching, learning, first-year, mathematics","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120189/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/323/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/85/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/65/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=json"]},{"id":71488,"title":"Postdoc Fellowship & Mobility funding opportunities - Information session","slug":"postdoc-fellowship-mobility-funding-opportunitie-4","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/postdoc-fellowship-mobility-funding-opportunitie-4","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32833/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32833/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32833/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-06-09","end_date":"2026-06-09","start_time":"12:15:00","end_time":"13:45:00","description":"
Are you a PhD student or new postdoc who is interested in learning more about funding opportunities for fellowships or career mobility? Are you affiliated with EPFL or with UNIL? Then join us for our regular information session on Postdoc & We found that the patterns of longitudinal change in neural network dynamics predicted psychosocial outcomes five years later in young adulthood.
\r\nWe found that “transcendent thinking” – seeing situations not just in terms of X happened to person A, which makes me feel thusly, but in terms of the larger societal and contextual forces that shaped how Person A was treated and how Person A reacted, the broader implications and lessons one can draw from that situation, and the larger issues it exemplifies or reveals—correlated with a particular set of neural activity dynamics and predicted future structural and functional neural development across the subsequent two years, controlling for the starting state of neural development, and independent of IQ and SES. Transcendent thinking also countered negative effects of exposure to community violence on structural brain development.
\r\nThe neural development predicted by transcendent thinking (the changes in the brain across the 2-year period) in turn predicted young adult identity strength, self-liking, relationship satisfaction, and achievement 5 years later.
\r\nThese findings reveal a novel predictor of neural development across mid-adolescence, and underscore the active role adolescents play in their own brain development through the meaning they make of the social world. Implications for secondary education and pedagogy will be discussed.
\r\n
\r\n
","image_description":"Visitors Talk: Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, University of Southern California","creation_date":"2026-03-25T12:31:22","last_modification_date":"2026-03-25T12:31:38","link_label":"Website of the event","link_url":"https://cibm.ch/event/visitors-talk-mary-helen-immordino-yang-university-of-southern-california/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"CH F1 614","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CH%20F1%20614","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/J9fJmYSQStOHtZMlxhTgaw","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, University of Southern California","organizer":"CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging","contact":"Miguel Molina, CIBM Media & Events Manager","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"neuroscience, psycology, education","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120181/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/284/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json"]}]}
