\r\nEvent Details:\r\n
2D materials have emerged over the last decade as the new playground for quantum photonics
\r\ndevices. Among them, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an interesting candidate, mainly because of its
\r\ncrystallographic compatibility with different 2D materials, but also because of its ability to harbour optically
\r\nactive defects that generate single photons. The negatively charged boron vacancy was the first intrinsic
\r\noptically addressable spin defect in hBN reported in 2020, allowing coherent control at room temperature.
\r\nAlthough other types of spin centres have been found in this material since then, this spin-1 colour centre
\r\nremains the only one with a clearly elucidated structure. Practical applications of hBN spin centres as
\r\nintrinsic magnetic field, temperature, pressure, etc. sensors in van der Waals heterostructures are hence
\r\nenvisioned. To further boost the quantum sensing applications of this spin defect in hBN, we are currently
\r\ninvestigating the dynamics of the intermediate state, also known as the metastable state, because it is likely
\r\nto trap electrons for a certain time, which affects the subsequent sensing protocol when the pulsed
\r\nmagnetic resonance experiment is designed.

Abstract:
\r\nAs anticipated by Onsager's conjecture, low-regularity solutions of the Euler equations exhibit greater flexibility than classical solutions. In the first part of this talk we focus on steady solutions, showing that in the low-regularity regime their streamlines can realize any prescribed topology, a phenomenon that cannot occur for classical solutions. The key tool is a novel implementation of convex integration that preserves the topology of the streamlines throughout the iteration. In the second part we extend these ideas to the MHD equations, constructing continuous weak solutions with constant nonzero helicity that nevertheless fail to conserve energy and cross helicity.
In this seminar, I will discuss our efforts to design conformationally constrained helical macrocyclic peptides and outline the principles that enable effective targeting of protein–protein interactions beyond classical stapled peptides. In the second part, I will show how a subtle isosteric backbone modification—thioamidation—can be used to impart oral bioavailability to bioactive macrocyclic peptides. I will further illustrate how conformational restriction enhances membrane permeability and highlight the critical role of metabolic stability in achieving oral bioavailability.

While architects are trained to focus on design, the political economy of construction is largely absent from architectural education—sustaining a disciplinary insularity that obscures architecture's deep entanglement with capital, labor, and power. Yet building is fundamentally contingent: dependent on forces beyond the designer's reach, shaped by actors whose decisions constrain and enable architecture far more than design intentions. The series invites scholars and practitioners whose research illuminates these dependencies: the bureaucratization of architectural practice through corporate management systems, the client as a Mephistophelean figure key to the attainment of projects, the contractor as a decisive agent in determining how architecture is produced, and the entanglement of real estate development, finance, building, and urban form. \r\nDavide Spina (University of Hong Kong, online) Spina's award-winning dissertation examined the Vatican-controlled real estate developer and contractor SGI (Società Generale Immobiliare), which emerged as a major force in postwar Italy's reconstruction. His research on what journalist Antonio Cederna called \"the Leviathan\" reveals how SGI coordinated 10,000 employees, bureaucratized architectural production, exploited planning regulations, and delivered schemes from residential developments to industrial infrastructure. Currently working on real estate development in 1960s-70s Hong Kong, Spina examines how developers and contractors shape architectural culture through corporate management systems.
