However, while cutting-edge research drives innovation, it also carries a significant environmental footprint. Laboratories consume large amounts of energy, generate substantial quantities of plastic, chemical, and biological waste, and contribute considerably to greenhouse gas emissions. At EPFL, we are committed to understanding and reducing this impact. Through the development and deployment of the EPFL CO₂ Calculator, we help researchers measure, understand, and improve the environmental performance of their activities.
\r\n
\r\nFrom October 8 to December 17, 2026, the Sustainable Labs: Get Involved sessions will focus on training and supporting users in the use of the EPFL CO₂ Calculator. This talk asks a simpler question that has received far less attention. When should students be allowed to use AI so that it helps their learning?
\r\n
\r\nIn this lunch&LEARN session, Janne Rotter turns to a question that's been largely overlooked: not how, but when should students be allowed to use AI for it to actually support learning? Janne will present findings from a study of 105 university students comparing three conditions: unrestricted AI access, no access at all, and a \"timed\" condition where students could only turn to AI after first attempting the task on their own.
\r\n
\r\nDrawing on multiple pedagogical theories to build a decision rule for when access should open up, the results show that students in the timed condition outperformed those with unrestricted access on an objective post-test, and had a more accurate sense of their own understanding, without an explicit metacognitive prompting. Compared to withholding AI entirely, timed access also seemed to reduce task errors and time spent on task.
\r\n
\r\nJoin us to learn more about the topic and engage in further discussion.
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-24T15:53:46","last_modification_date":"2026-09-28T15:37:37","link_label":"Registration/zoom","link_url":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/9pBBuqZHQge7OmGTm0Kedg#/registration","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"ME A3 31","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ME%20A3%2031","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/9pBBuqZHQge7OmGTm0Kedg#/registration","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Janne Rotter","organizer":"Center LEARN","contact":"lunchLEARN@groupes.epfl.ch","is_internal":"True","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"lunch&LEARN, Center LEARN, teaching, learning, AI","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121926/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/3/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/65/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/85/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/323/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=json"]},{"id":72731,"title":"Personalized Health and Related Technolgies (PHRT) Exhibition","slug":"personalized-health-and-related-technolgies-phrt-e","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/personalized-health-and-related-technolgies-phrt-e","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33948/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33948/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33948/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-13","end_date":"2026-11-03","start_time":"18:00:00","end_time":"10:00:00","description":"Engineering the Future of Health
\r\n
\r\nA look back at 14 of 133 pioneering projects and the emergence of the DeepHealth-movement. A prominent rupture mode is self-healing slip pulses, which feature a finite slipping zone. The physics of slip pulses is qualitatively different from their expanding crack-like counterparts, as they involve the interplay between leading-edge contact breakage and trailing-edge re-strengthening (healing). The latter is intrinsically related to generic properties of frictional interactions at contacting interfaces, absent in ordinary fracture of bulk materials. In this talk, I will review a recently developed theory of two-dimensional slip pulses, which revealed intriguing dynamical properties of slip pulses and provided extensive predictions for their spatiotemporal evolution. The theoretical predictions are supported by large-scale numerical simulations and, more recently, by extensive laboratory experiments. The implications and potential applications of the theory will be discussed as time permits.
\r\n
\r\nReferences:\r\n
\r\n\t
The dynamics of unsteady frictional slip pulses [PNAS 120, e2309374120 (2023)]
\r\n\t
An equation of motion for unsteady frictional slip pulses [EPSL 678, 119831 (2026)]
\r\n\t
Lab earthquakes confirm the theory of frictional slip pulses [arXiv:2608.26065 (2026)]
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography:
\r\nEran Bouchbinder is a Professor at Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. Weaving together documentary, theoretical, and fictional elements, her films and installations reflect the complexity of human relationships with their environments and foster a dialogue between science and myth to renew our perspective on the world.
\r\n
\r\nHis works have been exhibited at major contemporary art centers, institutions, and festivals around the world, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the IAC (Villeurbanne), the Loop Festival (Barcelona), Visions du Réel (Nyon), Wiels (Brussels), the Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva), the ZKM (Karlsruhe), Tokyo Wonder Site, the Museum of Modern Art (Tanzania), the Palazzo Grassi (Venice), as well as in New York, Madrid, Berlin, Zagreb, the TIFF Cinematheque (Toronto), and the Pera Museum (Istanbul).
\r\n
\r\nA two-time recipient of the Swiss Art Prize (2010, 2021) and the “Mondes Nouveaux” grant from the French Ministry of Culture (2022), her solo exhibition *Naturalis Historia* toured internationally after its opening at the Swiss Cultural Center in Paris (2017). She presented a major solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus in 2024 and is currently completing her first feature-length fiction film, *Les Indes*, scheduled for release in the fall of 2026.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-03T16:18:02","last_modification_date":"2026-09-28T10:49:06","link_label":"Programme complet des Culturelles","link_url":"https://www.epfl.ch/campus/art-culture/fr/les-culturelles/les-culturelles-dautomne-2026/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Forum Rolex","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20E1%20240","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Pauline Julier, artiste et cinéaste & Eric Vautrin, dramaturge au théâtre de Vidy","organizer":"Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)","contact":"Véronique Mauron Layaz","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"film, cosmologie, science-fiction","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121699/","category":{"id":9,"code":"MANIF","fr_label":"Événements festifs et culturels","en_label":"Cultural events","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/79/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/179/?format=json"]},{"id":72572,"title":"Participatory Modelling for Energy Scenarios and Transition Pathways","slug":"participatory-modelling-for-energy-scenarios-and-t","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/participatory-modelling-for-energy-scenarios-and-t","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33821/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33821/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33821/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-12","end_date":"2026-10-12","start_time":"17:00:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Thesis Directors: Prof. C. Despite extensive experimental evidence, the underlying mechanisms of this coupling remain debated. Here, we will explore how chiral magnetic textures can be stabilized in altermagnets, a new class of magnetism. Turning to structurally chiral magnetic molecules, we will show that chirality is directly linked to their intrinsic magnetic moments. Bringing both together, we will discuss how molecular design can control spin phenomena at hybrid chiral molecule-magnet interfaces. Our findings pave a pathway towards functional \"chiraltronic\" devices – turning a fundamental puzzle into a technological opportunity.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-10-01T09:59:25","last_modification_date":"2026-10-01T10:00:49","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"CM 1 5","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%205","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Prof. Angela Wittmann, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz","organizer":"Institut de Physique","contact":"vladimir.manucharyan@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":"https://memento.epfl.ch/public/upload/files/Wittmann12oct_Bl6EtiA.pdf","icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/122008/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/81/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/191/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/389/?format=json"]},{"id":72612,"title":"High-Energy Radiation and Electromagnetic Signatures in Upward Lightning: Physical Insights from Multi-band Measurements","slug":"high-energy-radiation-and-electromagnetic-signat-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/high-energy-radiation-and-electromagnetic-signat-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33857/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33857/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33857/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-12","end_date":"2026-10-12","start_time":"16:30:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Thesis Directors: Prof. F.
