Alongside a 'plurality of time', we are interested in the 'plurality of space'. Rather than transparency, it is the arrangement of different worlds face-to-face or side-by-side that creates this impression of density and richness in relationships.
\r\n
\r\nTo craft sustainable development, we believe that, alongside a body of fundamental knowledge, a spirit can be cultivated through tireless attempts, including failure, to develop a 'knowledge of the hand' capable of finding new forms of expression. The countless experiences that we have accumulated at MANSLAB over the past 15 years can undoubtedly be best recounted in the form of anecdotes. An anecdote is a historical detail or a characteristic of customs or character that becomes a short, entertaining story evoking emotions such as laughter or horror.
\r\n
\r\nThe students’ work that I am about to present illustrates certain tested, refined and proven principles, such as the indestructible link between ideas and the hand through the slow and joyful acquisition of knowledge; the economy of means to highlight the essential; errors and non-linearity as inspiring methods in the design process; and the cultivation of empirical, manual and physical knowledge that prioritises grasping sensory, supra-sensory and memory-based reality and is capable of creating new spaces. The launch of the book ANEKDOTA will take place at the same event.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker:
\r\nMarco Bakker is born in Harlingen, Netherlands, in 1960. He first earned a degree in Civil Engineering from HTS Leeuwarden, before continuing his studies in Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, including spending a year abroad at EPFL. Following four years of experimentation in architecture and photography, he founded the firm Bakker & Blanc Architects (BABL) with Alexandre Blanc in 1992. At the same time, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Vincent Mangeat and visiting professor Kaschka Knapkiewicz at EPFL. From 2003 to 2009, he taught architectural design and theory at the BFH in Burgdorf. Following four years as visiting professors together with Alexandre Blanc, they were appointed associate professors at the EPFL Institute of Architecture within the 'MANSLAB, Laboratory of Spatial Manufacturing' chair from 2013 to 2025.
\r\n
\r\nHe also served on the Arts and Architecture Commission of the Canton of Bern and was a member of the editorial board of Werk-Bauen & Wohnen. He chaired the jury for the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale on behalf of Pro Helvetia. Marco Bakker also regularly participates in various photographic and editorial projects related to art and architecture.
\r\n ","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-03-26T14:49:29","last_modification_date":"2026-03-26T16:15:54","link_label":"S'inscrire","link_url":"http://shorturl.at/Zatib","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SG 1138","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201138","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Prof. Marco Bakker","organizer":"IA - Gesualdo Casciana","contact":"gesualdo.casciana@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120198/","category":{"id":8,"code":"LI","fr_label":"Leçons inaugurales - Leçons d'honneur","en_label":"Inaugural lectures - Honorary Lecture","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json"]},{"id":71170,"title":"Une éducation au réel / ARCHIZOOM","slug":"une-education-au-reel-archizoom-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/une-education-au-reel-archizoom-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32538/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32538/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32538/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-05-19","end_date":"2026-05-19","start_time":"18:30:00","end_time":null,"description":"Tuesday 19 May 6.30 pm
\r\nBook launch
\r\n
\r\nPublication of the book Une éducation au réel accompanying the exhibition Une éducation au réel, l’Atelier Cantàfora à l’EPFL
\r\nPresentation by Beatrice Lampariello and discussion between Nicola Braghieri and Filippo Fanciotti
\r\n
\r\nAbout the exhibition
\r\n
\r\nUne éducation au réel
\r\nexplores the vast field of graphic representation in architecture through fifteen years of teaching architectural representation at EPFL at the turn of the 2000s. It presents around a hundred paintings on wood, didactic works produced between 1997 and 2007 in the teaching units of the painter Arduino Cantàfora. They suggest a possible way of making, between thought and actio, where drawing and painting structure a concept and become an essential language for expressing the founding idea of a project. Despite the transition to digital technology, the exhibition conveys the conviction that the artisanal culture of drawing and painting continues to play a fundamental and indispensable role in training architects.
\r\n
\r\nAn exhibition produced in collaboration with the LAPIS laboratoryat the EPFL’s Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nicola Braghieri, Filippo Fanciotti and Emy Amstein
\r\n ","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-02-18T11:19:13","last_modification_date":"2026-02-18T11:19:54","link_label":"Une éducation au réel","link_url":"https://www.epfl.ch/campus/art-culture/museum-exhibitions/archizoom/fr/une-education-au-reel-latelier-cantafora-2/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SG 1212","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201212","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Beatrice Lampariello, Nicola Braghieri, Filippo Fanciotti","organizer":"Archizoom, LAPIS","contact":"Solène Hoffmann","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"Architecture, ville, représentation, dessin, peinture, livre","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119778/","category":{"id":9,"code":"MANIF","fr_label":"Événements festifs et culturels","en_label":"Cultural events","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/45/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":66913,"title":"Semester Exhibition","slug":"semester-exhibition-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/semester-exhibition-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/28619/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/28619/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/28619/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-12-14","end_date":"2026-12-18","start_time":null,"end_time":null,"description":"Semester Exhibition
\r\nFall 2026
\r\n
\r\nQuestioned and reevaluated, the very foundations of our disciplines find space for exploration, research, and critical dialogue within the design studios. This versatility makes whisker-dependent behavior a powerful lens on sensorimotor control. The first part of the talk describes use of the whisker system to study embodied sensing and closed-loop sensorimotor control. On the sensory side, I will present models of whisker mechanics and signal encoding by primary sensory neurons. On the motor side, I will describe models of whisker musculature and emerging insights into the circuits that generate whisker movements. I will then outline key challenges in linking sensing to movement within an integrated closed-loop framework. The second part of the talk will highlight how whiskers interact with moving air. Bending and vibration encode direction and speed, including regimes where vibrations emerge at subcritical Reynolds numbers through coupled structural nonlinearities and fluid-structure interactions.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2025-10-08T12:14:17","last_modification_date":"2026-03-02T13:22:44","link_label":"Web Page","link_url":"https://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/research-faculty/directory/profiles/hartmann-mitra.html","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/64813563657","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Mitra Hartmann, Northwestern University, US","organizer":"BMI Host: Pavan Ramdya","contact":"brain_mind@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/118047/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/19/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/88/?format=json"]},{"id":70692,"title":"SUPER SANDWICH SEMINAR","slug":"super-sandwich-seminar-349","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/super-sandwich-seminar-349","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32112/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32112/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32112/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-04-09","end_date":"2026-04-09","start_time":"12:00:00","end_time":"13:00:00","description":"
Triple S (Super Sandwich Seminar) will feature 3 speakers per week, each presenting for 15 minutes, followed by a 5 minutes Q&A session.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2025-12-16T15:40:22","last_modification_date":"2025-12-16T15:43:15","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Anna Carla Farano - Goemans Lab; Romain Forey, Trono Lab; Angel Martinez, Suter Lab","organizer":"Prof. Pierre Gönczy","contact":"Lisa Smith, ISREC Administrative Assistant","is_internal":"True","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"Super Sandwich, cancer","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119043/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/26/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=json"]}]}
