In this context, this talk will focus on recent research advances on biomass and CO<sub>2</sub> conversion to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), chemicals and bio-based materials. Considering the challenges associated with low-carbon resources, including dispersed distribution, significant fluctuations in raw material composition, and high conversion costs, a distributed-centralized system utilizing alcohols as key platform molecules has been proposed. Alcohol synthesis from biomass and CO<sub>2</sub> will be presented with the focus on catalysis for methanol (thermocatalysis) and ethanol synthesis (electrocatalysis) from CO<sub>2</sub>. Conversion of alcohol to SAF will be introduced with discussions on the design of multifunctional catalysts for alcohol conversion, the dynamic evolution of catalytic sites, and the strategies for tuning product distributions. Additionally, a few examples of biobased materials, such as cellulose nanofiber-based biomaterials and bio-based nylon precursor and polyester precursor, will be presented.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Dr. Zhenglong Li is the “Qiushi” Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. He is the lead of the sustainable aviation fuels research of the State Key Laboratory of Bio-based Transportation Fuel Technology, director of the Biomass Value-Added Utilization Research Center, and the director of the Bio-based Chemicals Division in the Institute of Zhejiang University-Quzhou. His research is dedicated to the high-value utilization of biomass and carbon dioxide to synthesize sustainable aviation fuel, chemicals, and bio-based materials. He was the team lead in the biomass conversion area at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (United States) prior to joining Zhejiang University. He was the committee member for the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium under the United States Department of Energy (DOE). His group focus on in-depth understanding of the catalytic processes of biomass and carbon dioxide at the molecular level to guide catalyst design, process development, and industrial application, especially R&amp;D of SAF, bio-based chemicals, key bio-based polymer building blocks. His research group has published many high-impact scientific papers in top journals such as <em>J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nat. Commun., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., ACS Catal., Appl. Catal. B.,</em> and others. To obtain thin samples from biological tissue and cells in their flash-frozen native state, cryo-FIB milling is nowadays the most popular method, with impressive successes. The alternative, cryo-ultramicrotomy - also known as CEMOVIS - has been overshadowed because of (i) technical difficulties associated to cryo-section generation and collection - in particular the lack of control over adhesion; and (ii) crevasses and compression artefacts.<br>\r\nI will present recent developments with optimization of the experimental workflow, focusing on section adhesion and their support grids. These result in high throughput data acquisition, with typically several tens to hundreds of cryo-tomograms per sample. Revisiting cutting artefacts shows that crevasses alter but 10 % of the sample volume. Compression is heterogeneous, with scale and material-dependent effects. This is altogether a drawback – with no simple computational correction – and an advantage for projects dedicated to non-(or little)-affected objects such as nucleosomes and chromatin.<br>\r\nAltogether, it is time to revive CEMOVIS as a practical alternative to cryo-FIB milling, offering specific advantages: (i) imaging of large areas of any type of sample, from cells to tissues, organs or even entire organisms – and more generally all kinds of hydrated molecular systems ; (ii) the possibility of serial section approaches ; (iii) no beam damage ; and (iv) a specimen thickness that can be tuned down to 30-50 nm, which may be an advantage for high resolution imaging of small molecular complexes.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nAmélie Leforestier is a CNRS research director at the Solid-State Physics Laboratory (LPS, Paris-Saclay, France). After a PhD in Life Sciences on liquid crystalline self-assembly of DNA, she learned cryo electron microscopy during her post-doctoral studies in the group of Jacques Dubochet in Lausanne. Back in France, she set up a cryo-EM facility for soft matter physics at LPS. She is part of an <a href=\"https://equipes.lps.u-psud.fr/sobio/\">interdisciplinary team</a> dedicated to self-assembly processes at work in living systems at the molecular level. The fundamental unit of chromatin, the nucleosome, consists of ~147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These nucleosomes are connected by linker DNA, forming a “beads-on-a-string” structure that enables efficient packaging of the genome.<br>\r\nBeyond structural compaction, nucleosomes play a central role in regulating genome function. They can restrict access to DNA and act as barriers to essential processes such as transcription, replication, and repair. At the same time, nucleosomes serve as key epigenetic platforms, where histone modifications and histone variants modulate chromatin structure and dynamics to control gene activity.<br>\r\nTo better understand these regulatory mechanisms, we employ biochemical and structural approaches to investigate nucleosome structure and dynamics. Our studies aim to elucidate how structural transitions of nucleosomes influence DNA accessibility and ultimately govern genomic regulation. I will present our recent structural and biochemical insights and discuss their implications for understanding nucleosome-mediated genome regulation.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Bio:</strong><br>\r\nHitoshi Kurumizaka is a Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1995, he started his postdoctoral training at NIH in the USA, in the laboratory of Molecular Embryology (Alan Wolffe Lab), where he began chromatin research. In 1997, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist. He subsequently moved to Waseda University, where he served as Associate Professor and later as Professor of Molecular and Structural Biology. Since 2018, he has been Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the structural basis of chromatin and epigenetic regulation in eukaryotic genomes. In 2020, he established an in-house cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform to advance high-resolution structural studies of chromatin and genome-associated protein complexes. Professor Kurumizaka has made significant contributions to the field of chromatin biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleosomes and genome-associated protein complexes. This presentation will highlight the power of combining total synthesis and late-stage transformations to generate complex, modified proteins for deciphering the molecular roles of post-translational modifications (PTMs) in TFs regulation. Specific examples will focus on the synthesis of site-specifically phosphorylated and acetylated TFs, such as the Myc/Max system.<sup>2, 3</sup> Remarkably, these studies revealed that phosphorylation and acetylation patterns modulate Max–DNA interactions by altering DNA binding affinity and sequence specificity. Importantly, such mechanistic insights led to the development of novel bioactive miniproteins derived from Max (μMax), capable of inhibiting oncogene expression and cancer cell proliferation through antagonistic binding to target genes in cancer cells, paving the way for the development of new therapeutic proteins targeting oncogene expression.<sup>4-6</sup><br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n1.
