\r\nThe consortium applies for a project with a duration of 4 years (exception for Joint Doctorates, duration is 5 years). The financial contribution covers the salaries of doctoral candidates for the duration of 3 years (4 years for Joint Doctorates) and research, training and networking costs covering the whole project duration. Doctoral candidates (DCs) may not have lived or worked in the country of the host organization for more than 12 months within the last 3 years prior to the employment of the DC on the project.

\r\nOne of the QSE Center’s main missions is to attract excellent female students in the domain of quantum science and engineering, where they unfortunately still remain strongly underrepresented. To that end, the QSE Center has joined ETH Zurich, NCCR Spin and NCCR Marvel in launching the INSPIRE Quantum Master Awards. These awards aim to attract and empower excellent female students who will conduct their master’s project in the research areas represented at the QSE Center.

\r\nThis initiative, recognizing that an ambitious master’s research project is a stepping stone to starting a career in research, seeks to increase the number of young women researchers in the QSE domain, as represented by the numerous research groups at EPFL.

\r\nThe awardee will receive 8,000 CHF paid to them directly. External applicants (i.e. students who are completing their master studies at another university than EPFL) are eligible for up to an additional 2,000 CHF for travel expenses.

\r\nTemporary Sports Halls, Huts and a Hotel
\r\nGrowing student numbers and the need to renovate numerous school facilities prompted the Canton of Zurich to seek a temporary solution for sports facilities. Each building is intended to remain at a given location between three to fifteen years, until it is either relocated or stored for future reassembly. pool Architektur responded by designing a prefabricated timber construction system that enables a variety of spatial configurations and appearances, allowing for careful integration into the surrounding environment. Other projects such as the room-within-a-room installation for “El Gato Muerto” or the temporary hotel “Momentum” have evolved as a result of pool’s building for disassembly.

\r\nThomas Friberg + Sophie Piticco, pool Architektur
\r\npool Architektur evolved from a discussion platform for debates on architecture and urban planning and began its practical work as a collective in 1998. The office and its form are understood as a work in progress with regard to an ever-changing profession. The office has won numerous competitions and is primarily active in urban planning at different scales as well as residential, infrastructure and public building construction. Over the past decades, ideas and solutions have changed, as have names and faces, because diversity and change are at the heart of pool Architektur’s identity. 
\r\n
\r\nThomas Friberg studied architecture at ETH Zurich. After graduating, he worked at ETH Studio Basel, David Chipperfield Architects, joining pool in 2008. In 2018 he was admitted as a new partner. 
\r\n
\r\nSophie Piticco studied architecture at EPF Lausanne and ETH Zurich. After internships in Munich and Helsinki, she joined pool Architektur after graduating in 2017. Since 2023 she is an associate at the firm.
\r\n
\r\nPart of School Lecture Series, Autumn 2026, Learning Vol.1
\r\nWe are told that learning is no longer confined to the school or the university, but it has become a continuous process that involves the totality of life. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. We will ponder whether these things are only ‘tools’ to achieve a result or can still be vital places for learning.

\r\nFor a group of two to maximum four Principal Investigators (PIs) working together and bringing different skills and resources to tackle ambitious research problems.  One will be designated as the corresponding PI (cPI). The synergistic element to solve important research challenges is the key element for successful project proposals.

\r\nMax. EUR 10 Mio for a period of max. 6 years (including 25% overhead; pro rata temporis for shorter project duration). However, an additional EUR 4 million can be made available to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers moving from a third country to the EU or an associated country and/or the purchase of major equipment and/or access to large facilities and/or other major experimental and field work costs, including personnel costs.

\r\nCOST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding programme that encourages networking of scientific and technological research activities throughout Europe and beyond. The aim is to facilitate breakthrough scientific developments leading to new concepts and products. COST does not fund research but supports networking (COST Actions) via different tools such as meetings, short-term scientific exchanges, training schools and dissemination activities. COST Actions have a duration of 4 years. The deadline to submit a COST Action is usually in October. COST Actions do not cover research funding. Integration into existing COST actions is possible.

\r\nSwitzerland is one of the founding countries of COST and a full member of the COST Association. Thanks to this status, researchers in Switzerland are entitled to participate in COST Actions or to coordinate them and submit applications for new Actions. Thus, scientists based in Switzerland are fully eligible for all COST activities and for reimbursement of their related expenses.

\r\nSince Pasteur's discovery of molecular chirality, understanding how molecular handedness couples to its physical environment has remained a fundamental challenge. Of particular interest is its interplay with magnetism, anticipated already by Pierre Curie in 1894, as well as the emergence and propagation of chirality through molecular organization. Here, we explore these connections at surfaces, from the interaction of individual chiral molecules with magnetic substrates and spin-polarized electrons to the collective organization of molecular chirality in extended two-dimensional structures. First, we demonstrate enantioselective adsorption of individual helicene molecules on ferromagnetic cobalt surfaces. Spin- and chirality-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy reveals that left- and right-handed helicenes preferentially adsorb on Co islands with opposite out-of-plane magnetization, establishing a direct correlation between molecular handedness and substrate magnetization. Second, tunneling-conductance measurements through individual enantiomers reveal magnetochiral asymmetries of up to 50%, demonstrating spin-selective electron transport at the single-molecule level and excluding ensemble effects as the sole origin of chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS).
