\r\n
\r\n>>> Site web de l'artiste Rahel Oberhummer
\r\n
\r\nVernissage le jeudi 7 mai 2026 à 18 :30
\r\nExposition visible jusqu’au 11 octobre 2026
\r\nHall du RLC / entrée libre
\r\n
\r\nImage : Dioszegia patagonica 001, Pochonia/Metacordyceps chlamydosporia 205, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum 511, Potato Dextrose Agar with sepia ink, 2022.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-03-16T17:17:43","last_modification_date":"2026-05-26T15:56:40","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Hall du Rolex Learning Center","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20G1%2094.12","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":[],"speaker":"Rahel Oberhummer, artiste","organizer":"Pôle Culture EPFL","contact":"Véronique Mauron Layaz","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120096/","category":{"id":5,"code":"EXPO","fr_label":"Expositions","en_label":"Exhibitions","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":72519,"title":"White Shadow - Exhibition","slug":"white-shadow-exhibition","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/white-shadow-exhibition","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33781/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33781/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33781/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-14","end_date":"2026-10-14","start_time":"18:30:00","end_time":"20:00:00","description":"
Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m.
\r\nExhibition on view from October 14, 2026, through February 9, 2027
\r\n
\r\nWhat if, one day, all our photographs suddenly transformed and became the very objects they depict? It was produced using photogrammetry, a technology that transforms photographs into 3D models. The images are generated from data sourced from online libraries. The result is a dizzying architecture so pervasive that it erects barriers and isolates individuals from one another. A society is emerging, grappling with media saturation, sensory overload, and a crushing ecological impact. The robot must perceive a ball travelling at high speed, estimate its position and spin, predict its trajectory, decide how to respond, and execute a precise motion, all while interacting with an intelligent and unpredictable opponent.
\r\nIn this talk, I will present Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed at Sony AI that progressed from learning basic racket skills to competing with elite human players. I will discuss the complete system behind this progression: high-speed visual perception, reinforcement learning, simulation, robot control, and the iterative sim-to-real process that enabled policies trained in simulation to perform on a real robot. Beyond table tennis, ACE provides a case study in what it takes to move from impressive robotic demonstrations to robust physical intelligence. I will share some of the lessons we learned about combining learning with control, using real-world failures to improve simulation, and designing AI systems that can adapt and act under the speed, uncertainty, and constraints of the physical world.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nMireille El Gheche is a Lead Research Scientist at SoftBank Robotics, working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. Fascinated by small-scale variations, the interplay of tension and release, density, and vibration, he has created projects such as the 12-vinyl box set *Beat Diary* (Everest Records, 2012), comprising 365 rhythmic pieces accompanied by a book of photographs; the daily series of eight-second loops “Morphblog” (2013–2019); and “Depot,” an audiovisual installation for 16 speakers and 16 screens, presented at the Kunstmuseum in Thun. For his album “Hidden Tracks: Basel – Geneva” (Everest Records, 2017), Julian walked more than 200 kilometers with his drumsticks and recording equipment, playing and capturing a multitude of sounds and textures from objects he encountered along the way.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
In recent years, Julian Sartorius has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Sophie Hunger, Sylvie Courvoisier, Gyda Valtysdottir, Dimlite, Shahzad Ismaily, and Dan Carey. His instantly recognizable percussion work also appears on recent albums by Kate Tempest, Matthew Herbert, and James Zoo. Julian Sartorius has toured and performed in North and South America, Asia, and Europe, sharing the stage with artists such as Marc Ribot, Deerhoof, Faust, Jaki Liebezeit, and Arto Lindsay.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nUsinesonore
\r\nThe Usinesonore association shares its passion for music by promoting it through various activities in the Canton of Bern and beyond. On this occasion, the awardee will give a conference on the EPFL Campus. Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to hear from one of the most influential figures in contemporary computer science.
\r\n
\r\nConference abstract
\r\nIt's 2026, and the answer to every problem today seems to be a multiple choice exercise of selecting answers from: AI, Agents, LLMs or machine learning. Is our future really just all about prompt engineering?
\r\n
\r\nAt a time when artificial intelligence, autonomous agents and large language models seem to be presented as the answer to every challenge, Margo Seltzer offers a thought-provoking perspective on the value of simplicity in computer science and machine learning. She will demonstrate how simpler and more transparent approaches can deliver performance comparable to that of the most sophisticated models, while providing greater interpretability, more efficient use of resources and a more natural way of addressing issues of fairness and privacy. The lecture will also explore a theme that lies at the heart of her career: collaboration. Drawing on her own experience of collaborative research, Margo Seltzer will explain how working together can broaden one’s impact, help overcome imposter syndrome, and enable individuals to discover and develop their unique strengths.
\r\n
\r\nAbout Prof. Margo Seltzer
\r\nProf. Margo Seltzer is Co-Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), where she moved after two decades as a Full Professor at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1992 from the University of California, Berkeley. A pioneering computer systems researcher, she is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors, including the 2023 ACM Athena Lecturer Award and the USENIX Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Alongside her academic career, Margo Seltzer is an entrepreneur: she co-founded Sleepycat Software, maker of Berkeley DB, a widely used embedded database engine later acquired by Oracle. A recognized leader in her field, she is also a devoted mentor to young women in computer science and founded the \"Systers Lunch,\" the original diversity gathering at SOSP, the flagship conference of the systems research community.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-28T19:19:24","last_modification_date":"2026-09-30T10:39:26","link_label":"REGISTRATION","link_url":"https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/29LjxMdyae","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SG 1138","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201138","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"","organizer":"","contact":"Nicolas Hocq","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121974/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json"]},{"id":72214,"title":"Do Robots Dream of Construction Sites? / ARCHIZOOM x CRCL","slug":"do-robots-dream-of-construction-sites-archizoom--3","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/do-robots-dream-of-construction-sites-archizoom--3","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33494/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33494/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33494/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-09-09","end_date":"2026-12-05","start_time":null,"end_time":null,"description":"DO ROBOTS DREAM OF CONSTRUCTION SITES?
\r\n09.09-05.12.2026
\r\n
\r\nOpening Tuesday 8 September
\r\n6.15pm – Discussion between Stefana Parascho and Aude Billard, moderated by Pier Vittorio Aureli
\r\n7.30pm – Opening doors and aperitive
\r\n
\r\nWhat if robots didn’t replace us, but worked alongside us?
