Held every week, alternating between Tuesdays and Thursdays, these sessions provide an opportunity for laboratories, platforms, centers, and units to receive guidance and support on implementing more sustainable laboratory practices.

\r\nThe Sustainable Labs initiative is part of EPFL's Climate & Sustainability Strategy 2030, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 40% compared to 2006/2019 levels and achieve climate neutrality by 2040.

\r\nResearch activities are a key lever for achieving these ambitious goals. However, while cutting-edge research drives innovation, it also carries a significant environmental footprint. Laboratories consume large amounts of energy, generate substantial quantities of plastic, chemical, and biological waste, and contribute considerably to greenhouse gas emissions. At EPFL, we are committed to understanding and reducing this impact. Through the development and deployment of the EPFL CO₂ Calculator, we help researchers measure, understand, and improve the environmental performance of their activities.

\r\nFrom October 8 to December 17, 2026, the Sustainable Labs: Get Involved sessions will focus on training and supporting users in the use of the EPFL CO₂ Calculator. This tool enables laboratories, platforms, centers, and central units to estimate their carbon footprint, identify major emission hotspots, and support informed decision-making to reduce their environmental impact through targeted actions.

SWEET (Swiss Energy Research for the Energy Transition) is a funding programme of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) that supports research and innovation projects contributing to Switzerland’s Energy Strategy 2050 and climate objectives through several funding instruments, including SWEET, SWEETER, and SOUR, the latter focusing on unconventional and potentially transformative approaches.
\r\n \r\n\r\n
The second SOUR call focuses on ensuring a secure and affordable energy supply during Switzerland’s transition to a net-zero energy system. The call is led by Prof. emeritus Marco Mazzotti, who oversees project evaluation, monitoring, and funding decisions, with support from SFOE experts. If milestones are not met, he may terminate projects and reallocate any funds that become available.
\r\n
\r\nThe guiding theme of the call is “Supply Security on the Path to a Net-Zero Energy System.” It seeks high-risk, high-potential “game-changing” technologies that could substantially improve Switzerland’s energy security while advancing the transition to net-zero, e.g., by increasing renewable production, enabling better integration into the energy system, or reducing energy consumption. 
\r\n
\r\nThe key idea is not incremental improvement: projects should aim for a major technological leap, starting around TRL 3–4 and reaching at least TRL 6, with commercialisation considered from the outset. In other words, SOUR is looking for unconventional technologies that could fundamentally shift the cost/performance frontier and eventually achieve significant market deployment in Switzerland.
\r\n
\r\nFunding duration: The total funding for this call is CHF 4 Mio., with which at most 4 projects will be supported. Each project may apply for up to CHF 1.33 million over a maximum period of three years. The start of the projects is planned for April 2027.
\r\n
\r\nApplications: Applications for SOUR funding proceed through a single proposal and require the formation of a team, a work programme, and a budget.
\r\n
\r\nProject Team: A team is led by one Principal Investigator (PI) and may contain one or more Co-PIs. Because SOUR funding is intended for small teams, the team size should be conducive to producing a major leap and enters into the evaluation. The PI and Co-PIs must be employees of a Swiss institution of higher education, a Swiss private sector company, or a Swiss non-commercial research organisation.

\r\nThe robots that build our world do exactly what they are told, when they are told, where they are told. But that relationship is ending: physical AI is giving our machines the intelligence to explore our world for themselves. What should they do with their newfound curiosity? This installation explores a new social contract with autonomous, intelligent systems (4.0) — one built on convincing, not controlling, machines. As you approach, the machine may choose to interact with you, or it may be too busy having fun on its own. It gets to decide.
