The Petrichor installation aims to restore rain’s central role and encourage reflection on its presence. \r\n \r\nThe installation consists of two parts: \r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
A 1-square-meter funnel that collects rainwater while amplifying its sound. The funnel is modeled after a flower—the bromeliad—which naturally collects rainwater. The water is then channeled into the second part of the installation. \r\n\t.
\r\n\t
A wooden cabinet containing 63 plastic containers, each holding 5 liters. All the containers are connected to one another by a system of pipes; the rainwater fills the containers from the bottom up. The 10 containers at the bottom of the cabinet are marked in blue; this corresponds to the minimum daily water intake for one person, as defined by the WHO, which is 50 liters. The containers above them—totaling 265 liters—represent the average water consumption of a person in Switzerland, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. This cabinet highlights the contrast between these two volumes. By relating these figures to the collected rainwater, the installation demonstrates that water remains a limited resource and is therefore a major challenge for the world today and in the future.

Only graduate students or researchers hosted or employed at an EPFL lab or unit are eligible to apply and act as Principal Investigator (PI). The head of the host lab has to co-sign the application form, and expressing as such their support of the project proposal.

QSE innovation seed funding cannot be used for basic research or as general funding for the PI’s host lab. It can only be used for applicable planned projects in the field of quantum science and engineering with high innovation potential for business and society offering concrete solutions to problems. A main driver to determine eligible projects is the attractivity towards industrial partners and the technology transfer traction. We commit to considering all high potential translational projects and ideas, even if they have not yet filed Intellectual Property.

Projects can be co-sponsored by third parties (e.g., federal government, cantons, foundations, business acting as a potential licensee).

\r\n \r\nThe 3rd call for proposals is now open and the deadline for the submission of the applications is 9 November 2026 17:00 (CET). \r\n \r\nWho can apply: \r\n \r\nApplications are encouraged from researchers at the postdoctoral level. \r\n \r\nApplicants must have obtained a PhD diploma in computer science, physics, engineering, applied mathematics, or another field relevant to artificial intelligence, no more than two years before the submission deadline. \r\n \r\nDoctoral students in their last year can also apply, but they will need to have completed their PhD degree by the time they start their fellowship project. \r\n \r\nThis call is open to applicants of all nationalities. No age restrictions apply. \r\n \r\nFunding and duration: \r\n \r\nThe fellowship is granted for a maximum period of two years, and it covers a contribution to the salary of approx. 50% (EPFL salary scales apply). The remaining part of the salary is covered by the EPFL host laboratories. This makes them promising platforms for spin-optoelectronics and quantum technologies2,3. \r\nDesigning them rationally, however, requires understanding how chirality is transferred from the \r\norganic cations to the inorganic framework, and how this transfer governs their chiroptical and spin \r\nproperties4. \r\nIn this seminar I will present a simulation framework that combines ab initio molecular dynamics, freeenergy \r\nmethods and time-dependent density functional theory to predict circular dichroism (CD), \r\ncircularly polarized luminescence (CPL), absorption and emission dissymmetry factors (gabs, glum) in \r\nchiral perovskites. Applied to (R/S-MBA)2PbI4 and its tin analogue, this approach shows that \r\nenantiomeric excess acts as a continuous dial for chiroptical properties5. The response follows a \r\ncooperative majority-rule mechanism, which we validated against experiments across the full \r\nenantiomeric series. Electronic-structure analysis links the two characteristic CD bands to distinct \r\nband-edge and organic–inorganic transitions. \r\nI will also discuss how chemical strain and hydrostatic pressure can tune the intensity and sign of CPL \r\nemission6, and how structural chirality, spin-orbit coupling and lattice distortions may shape spin \r\npolarization.
