Three scientists discuss the challenges of space research, the latest discoveries, and imaginary worlds.
\r\n
\r\nDidier Queloz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of exoplanets, speaks with Camille Bonvin, a cosmologist, and Violaine Sautter, a planetary geologist and member of NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance missions. The conversation, centered around a thermos, camping mugs, and a picnic, draws a connection to Ray Bradbury’s short story A Million-Year Picnic (1946), part of his *The Martian Chronicles*: a family must leave Earth and finds its own reflection while searching for Martians.
\r\n
\r\nEven today, the question remains: What do we learn about ourselves when we look at Mars? What kind of life—past or future—are we searching for in space? This film is the result of a collaborative, interdisciplinary creative process that took place at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in 2024.
\r\n
\r\nAFTER THE SCREENING:
\r\nFollowing the screening, there will be a discussion between director Pauline Julier and Eric Vautrin, playwright at the Vidy Theater.
\r\n
\r\n---
\r\nBiography of Pauline Julier
\r\nPauline Julier (b. 1981, Geneva) is an artist and filmmaker whose practice explores the connections humans forge with the world around them through stories, rituals, knowledge, and images. His documentaries address contemporary issues such as the crisis of democracy, the economic crisis, and the rise of populism, using dramatic techniques similar to those found in fiction. Among them, *Connu de nos services* (1997) addresses the scandal surrounding the political dossiers compiled by the Federal Police in the 1970s and 1980s. *Mais im Bundeshuus / Le Génie helvétique* (2003), one of Swiss cinema’s major box-office hits, follows the work of a parliamentary commission tasked with drafting a law on genetic engineering. *The Blocher Experiment* (2013) sparked intense controversy. *Cleveland vs. Wall Street* (2010), about the subprime mortgage crisis, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival (Directors’ Fortnight) and nominated for a César Award in France. His film *The Paris Opera* (2017) was subsequently widely distributed around the world. With this film, which drew more than 200,000 viewers to theaters, Jean-Stéphane Bron won the Swiss Film Award in the Best Documentary category for the third time in 2018. In 2021, Jean-Stéphane Bron released *Cinq nouvelles du cerveau*, a feature-length film that explores various mind-boggling questions related to advances in the fields of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Between December 2021 and May 2022, he filmed the series *Ma rue de l’Ale* for RTS on his own street in Lausanne; the series was a huge hit with audiences.
\r\n
\r\nExploring reality through the eyes of those who shape it. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. Each building is intended to remain at a given location between three to fifteen years, until it is either relocated or stored for future reassembly. pool Architektur responded by designing a prefabricated timber construction system that enables a variety of spatial configurations and appearances, allowing for careful integration into the surrounding environment. Other projects such as the room-within-a-room installation for “El Gato Muerto” or the temporary hotel “Momentum” have evolved as a result of pool’s building for disassembly.
\r\n
\r\nThomas Friberg + Sophie Piticco, pool Architektur
\r\npool Architektur evolved from a discussion platform for debates on architecture and urban planning and began its practical work as a collective in 1998. The office and its form are understood as a work in progress with regard to an ever-changing profession. The office has won numerous competitions and is primarily active in urban planning at different scales as well as residential, infrastructure and public building construction. Over the past decades, ideas and solutions have changed, as have names and faces, because diversity and change are at the heart of pool Architektur’s identity.
\r\n
\r\nThomas Friberg studied architecture at ETH Zurich.
