Likewise, in a ferroic material, regions with different orientation of the order parameter, the domains, do not simply exist side by side, but they exhibit new phases and properties in the domain walls. Because of their discontinuous, confined, and topological nature, domain walls exhibit functional states that are not possible in the bulk. Continuing this line of thought, one should expect domain walls in multiferroics to be a particularly rich source of novel phenomena. Here one must distinguish between (i) \"domain walls in multiferroics\", where only the ferroelectric (or magnetic) order is considered so that little is learned about the multiferroic state, and (ii) \"multiferroic domain walls\" where the ferroic phase coexistence of the wall itself is of interest. The latter are rarely studied, and I will discuss some of their intriguing features in my talk.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Professor Manfred Fiebig is known for his work in light-matter interaction in systems with strong electronic correlations. Advancements in surface engineering have enabled significant enhancement of boiling heat transfer. However, performance gains rarely transfer across conditions or geometries. Two challenges illustrate why: bubble nucleation behavior is poorly reproducible; and increasing nucleating density to raise the heat transfer coefficient typically lowers the system’s maximum achievable heat flux. This talk presents our efforts in addressing each challenge by identifying the governing mechanism and designing for it.
\r\nIn the first part, micro-engineered silicon surfaces isolate two governing length scales: the hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness, which controls nucleation stability through inter-site shielding, and the bubble departure diameter, which governs vapor removal after full activation. We experimentally show that nucleation stability responds to the former length scale (~0.24 mm); heat transfer in the activated regime responds to the latter length scale (~2.5 mm).
\r\nThe second study addresses the high-heat-flux limit, where large vapor structures block liquid return. Capillary wicking through copper inverse opals (~10 μm pores) supplies liquid beneath the vapor. Crucially, the pore cavities are themselves the nucleation sites, so wicking capacity and nucleation density derive from the same structure. Further, CuO nanograss on the pore walls suppresses vapor penetration into the porous layer, enabling thicker structures and greater capillary head. The result is simultaneous enhancement of heat transfer coefficients and maximum heat fluxes.
\r\nTogether, the two works show that mechanism-targeted surface design yields gains that empirical topography optimization does not. They point toward a broader design principle: that nucleation and interfacial transport, treated as controllable rather than given, offer a promising path to engineering phase change processes across applications.
\r\n
\r\nhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acsami.9b20520?ref=pdf
\r\nhttps://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-10209-w
\r\n
\r\nBio: Zhengmao Lu is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at EPFL. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
","image_description":"Prof. Julien Marie","creation_date":"2026-03-06T11:49:19","last_modification_date":"2026-03-11T09:53:47","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/65172501275","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Prof. Julien MARIE, CRCL : Cancer Research Center of Lyon ","organizer":"Prof. Daniel Constam","contact":"Prof. Daniel Constam","is_internal":"True","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119997/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":70990,"title":"\"Mapping the Human Body One Cell at a Time.\"","slug":"mapping-the-human-body-one-cell-at-a-time","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/mapping-the-human-body-one-cell-at-a-time","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32376/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32376/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32376/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-04-30","end_date":"2026-04-30","start_time":"12:15:00","end_time":"13:15:00","description":"A Lola and John Grace Distinguished Lecture in Cancer Research\r\n
\r\n

\r\nSarah Teichmann completed her PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, and was a Beit Memorial Fellow at University College London. She established her research group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 2001, where her main discoveries included the finding that protein assembly pathways are stereotypical and conserved. In 2013, she transitioned to the Wellcome Genome Campus, where she became the first and, to date, the only faculty member appointed across both the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. In 2016, she was appointed as the Head of the Cellular Genetics programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and co-founded the Human Cell Atlas initiative. From April 2024, she was appointed chair in Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge, within the Department of Medicine and the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Additionally, Sarah dedicates part of her time to GlaxoSmithKline and to EnsoCell Therapeutics, the startup company she co-founded. The Teichmann lab focuses on developing and applying cell atlas technologies to understand human tissue architecture, particularly examining how cellular diversity is generated in the immune system and during development.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-01-28T14:35:28","last_modification_date":"2026-02-13T13:56:17","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/97039045251?pwd=WDFjUGV3Y1FxeG9rTUIrOGpiUXhLQT09","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Sarah Teichmann FMedSci FRS (Group Leader), Cambridge Stem Cell Institute & Department of Medicine, Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, University of Cambridge","organizer":"Prof. Charlotte Bunne","contact":"Lisa Smith, ISREC Administrative Assistant","is_internal":"True","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"Grace Lecture, cancer","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119505/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/26/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]}]}
