Encounters with robot companions have brought moments of enjoyment, surprise, and support, while revealing challenges involving communication, expectations, privacy, and control. I explore how embodiment, movement, voice, and interaction pacing shape these experiences, and how caregivers can support engagement while preserving older adults’ choices and dignity.
\r\n
\r\nThese findings inform design requirements for robots that people can understand, guide, and adjust as their circumstances change. I connect them to opportunities for adaptive robot behavior, accessible interaction, and shared control, including how robots might recognize when assistance is welcome and make their actions easier to interpret or interrupt. Achieving net-zero transport requires coordinated action across energy carriers, carbon flows and mitigation of other pollutants. This talk presents a multiscale engineering framework for sustainable mobility, organised around three complementary pathways: fuel development (F), greenhouse-gas management (G) and mitigating harmful emissions beyond CO2 (H). First, using solar-driven CO2 conversion as an example, I will show how the precise transport of light, heat and fluids enables the coordinated design of materials, devices and systems, maximising solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency. Second, I will explore on-board carbon capture for road and maritime transport, together with distributed carbon-removal networks that use existing vehicles, ventilation systems and transport infrastructure. Third, I will discuss particulate matter generated by brake and tyre wear, illustrating how materials engineering can balance filtration efficiency, pressure drop and energy demand. Finally, the talk considers how techno-economic assessment and the interplay between technology, business and policy can move laboratory innovations towards industrial deployment.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Dr Xiangkun (Elvis) Cao (https://profiles.imperial.ac.uk/elvis.cao) is currently an Assistant Professor at Imperial College London, holding joint appointments in Mechanical Engineering and the Grantham Institute. A borrower raises funds for an initial investment and may need financing after observing a private liquidity shock. Under non exclusive lending, new lenders price only their claims, so additional borrowing dilutes existing debt and leads to excessive leverage. The optimal simple debt contract is an endogenous debt limit. It captures the intertemporal commitment–flexibility tradeoff: more borrowing today fi nances investment but increases dilution incentives, requiring tighter limits on future borrowing. Richer clauses, including performance-sensitive debt and contingent prepayment provisions, re store the exclusive-lending benchmark by compensating existing lenders when new financing is raised.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-06-03T15:01:15","last_modification_date":"2026-09-30T13:50:47","link_label":"Paper","link_url":"https://yunzhihu.web.unc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/14825/2026/08/draft-v4.pdf","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"UNIL, Extranef, room 126","url_place_and_room":"","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Yunzhi Hu - The University of North Carolina","organizer":"","contact":"sophie.cadenakauz@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120962/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/112/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/3/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/116/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/105/?format=json"]},{"id":72518,"title":"Secouons-nous les eaux - Performance","slug":"secouons-nous-les-eaux-performance-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/secouons-nous-les-eaux-performance-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33780/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33780/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33780/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-14","end_date":"2026-10-14","start_time":"12:00:00","end_time":"13:00:00","description":"
The Hydromondes collective invites the EPFL community to explore the relationship between science and the bodies of water that surround us, in an artistic and festive setting.
\r\n
\r\nOn stage:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Marin Schaffner, ethnologist
\r\n\t
Jeanne Mermet, engineer
\r\n\t
Gabriel Cotte, hydrologist
\r\n\t
Clémence Mathieu, illustrator
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\nThe event, which could be called a “festive gathering,” is a mix of performance, lecture, and debate. This collaboration between the collective and the academic community will therefore continue for the Culturelles in October 2026, with a more participatory format—somewhere between an artistic presentation and a town hall meeting—in a playful atmosphere.
\r\n
\r\n>>> Free admission; light refreshments provided upon registration
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-03T16:58:47","last_modification_date":"2026-09-29T18:00:01","link_label":"Inscription à la collation","link_url":"https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/ffSBMqP21Y","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Hall MED","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MED%200%2094.22","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=json"],"speaker":"Collectif Hydromondes ; Marin Schaffner, ethnologue ; Jeanne Mermet, ingénieure ; Gabriel Cotte, hydrologue et Clémence Mathieu, dessinatrice ","organizer":"Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)","contact":"Véronique Mauron Layaz","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"Léman, corps aquatique, performance","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121705/","category":{"id":9,"code":"MANIF","fr_label":"Événements festifs et culturels","en_label":"Cultural events","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/79/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json"]},{"id":72572,"title":"Participatory Modelling for Energy Scenarios and Transition Pathways","slug":"participatory-modelling-for-energy-scenarios-and-t","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/participatory-modelling-for-energy-scenarios-and-t","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33821/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33821/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33821/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-12","end_date":"2026-10-12","start_time":"17:00:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Thesis Directors: Prof. C. Bimodality is common, but trimodality—that is, the ability to successfully navigate between aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial environments—is relatively rare. Multimodality is also challenging to achieve in engineered devices, vehicles, and robots; however, several animals are capable of regularly (and easily) traversing environmental boundaries. In this talk, we will outline several of the general adaptations that living organisms use to locomote between land, air, and water. We will then present recent work on the biomechanics and fluid dynamics of trimodal aquatic insects. These insects exhibit hybrid walking-swimming gaits when transitioning from land to shallow water; they also leverage surface tension, buoyancy, fluid drag, and aerodynamic forces to take off into flight directly from the water surface. They also display underwater agility, using their legs as paddles to propel themselves rapidly as they seek prey and/or escape from predators. They also have interesting morphological features to enable these transitions, including superhydrophobic wings and hemelytra, as well as dense setae lining the metathoracic legs. These bristle-like features create shape-morphing appendages for efficient swimming, and are also used to lever the insect’s body off the deforming water surface during takeoff. In this talk, we will present data from all three locomotor modes and discuss their implications for both fundamental biology and ecology as well as bioinspired engineering and technology development.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Dr. Margaret L. In response to CNS insult, including traumatic injury or implantation of a medical device, astrocytes undergo a conserved, temporally regulated reprogramming that reshapes their prioritized functions to protect adjacent neural tissue. The nature and extent of astrocyte reprogramming critically influences outcomes after CNS insult. For example, regeneration after traumatic CNS injury in adult mammals is limited by local responding astrocytes lacking sufficient self-renewal capacity. By contrast, the CNS of neonate (newborn) mammals possesses exceptional parenchymal repair capacity owing to immature astrocytes with elevated proliferative and migratory potential. In the context of an implanted medical device, the spatial extent of astrocyte reprogramming and how impacted astrocytes respond to any further device micromotion, latent infection, or other persistent device-derived stimuli, dictates device performance and longevity. Engineering astrocyte responses to promote targeted functional gains while preserving key capabilities of healthy neural tissue astrocytes will be critical to enabling effective neural regeneration therapies and improving long-term performance of implanted devices. In this talk, I will outline our emerging understanding of how adult astrocytes adaptively reprogram in response to CNS injury and implanted foreign bodies, drawing insights from innovative astrocyte-specific transcriptomic bioassays. I will also provide an overview of biomaterial and cell-grafting strategies that we are exploring to direct astrocyte responses in preclinical models of stroke, spinal cord injury, and foreign body responses.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nDr. Timothy O’Shea, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering department at Boston University (BU).
