Nocera is the Patterson Rockwood Professor of Energy at Harvard University. Nocera is recognized for his discoveries in renewable energy, originating new paradigms that have defined the field of solar energy conversion and storage. Nocera created the field of proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) at a mechanistic level by making the first measurements that temporally resolved the movement of an electron coupled to a proton. On this experimental foundation, he provided the first theory of PCET. With PCET as a guiding framework, he invented the Artificial Leaf and the Bionic Leaf. The Artificial Leaf comprises Si coated with catalysts to capture the direct solar process of photosynthesis – the use of sunlight to split water to hydrogen and oxygen from neutral water, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The Bionic Leaf-C comprises a bio-engineered organism interfaced with the catalysts of the Artificial Leaf to capture the dark process of photosynthesis – the combination of carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce biomass and liquid fuels. The integration of the light and dark processes of the Artificial Leaf and the Bionic Leaf-C, respectively, allowed Nocera to develop a complete artificial photosynthesis — sunlight + air + water to biomass and liquid fuels. The Bionic Leaf-C is much more efficient than natural photosynthesis, exceeding the biomass efficiencies of natural photosynthesis by a factor of ×10 and biomass-to-fuels efficiencies by a factor of ×100. Extending this approach to the Bionic Leaf-N, Nocera has achieved a renewable and distributed Haber-Bosch synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen in air by coupling solar-based water splitting to a nitrogen and carbon fixing microorganism to produce a living biofertilizer, resulting in increased crop yields and early harvests. In the latest field trial for leafy vegetables (90% chemical replacement of urea ammonium nitrate), use of the biofertilizer on a 400-acre farm mitigated 153 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Additionally, the Bionic Leaf-N as a living biofertilizer avoids nitrogen runoff and thus has an important future role in sustainable farming. These science discoveries set the stage for the large scale and distributed deployment of solar energy fuels and food production using only sunlight, air and any water source. With such simple natural inputs, these discoveries are particularly useful to the poor, where large infrastructures for fuel and food production are not tenable.
\r\n
\r\nNocera’s research contributions have been recognized by several awards, some of which include the Leigh Ann Conn Prize for Renewable Energy, Italgas Prize, IAPS Award, Burghausen Prize, the United Nation’s Science and Technology Award, Firenze Award in Molecular Sciences, F. A. Cotton Medal, Clarivate Citation Laureate and from the American Chemical Society the Inorganic Chemistry, Harrison Howe, Kosolapoff and Remsen Awards and the FA Cotton Medal. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences. I will discuss two discoveries that reveal how lysosomes solve these complementary challenges and how their failure creates disease vulnerabilities. First, I will describe Lysosomal Leucine Aminopeptidase (LyLAP), an enzyme specialized to processively degrade the hydrophobic α-helices of transmembrane proteins. LyLAP is highly expressed in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, where its loss causes hydrophobic peptides to accumulate, compromises lysosomal function, and ultimately leads to cancer cell death, revealing a potential vulnerability in tumors with elevated endocytic activity. I will then describe LASER, a damage-responsive protein assembly that couples lysosomal membrane injury to repair. At its core, the oligomeric protein TFG recognizes LC3/GABARAP proteins conjugated to damaged lysosomes and recruits the ESCRT machinery to restore membrane integrity. Neurodegenerative disease-associated mutations in TFG disrupt this process, linking defective lysosomal repair to human disease. Together, these findings reveal lysosomes as dynamic systems that coordinate cargo degradation with membrane surveillance and repair to maintain cellular homeostasis.
\r\n
\r\nMore about Dr. Aakriti Jain's lab at UTSW: https://aakritijainlab.com/
","image_description":"Dr. Aakriti Jain","creation_date":"2026-08-19T11:24:24","last_modification_date":"2026-09-21T16:54:33","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SV 1717","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/7467019292","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Dr. Aakriti Jain, UTSW","organizer":"Dr. Juan Manuel García-Arcos","contact":"Dr. Juan Manuel García-Arcos, juan.garciaarcos@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"ESCRT, Lysosomal repair, organelle dynamics, Lysosomal Leucine Aminopeptidase, transmembrane protein degradation","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121477/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=json"]},{"id":72507,"title":"Development of Aptamer-Functionalized Graphene Devices for Biosensing of Stress Biomarkers","slug":"development-of-aptamer-functionalized-graphene-d-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/development-of-aptamer-functionalized-graphene-d-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33753/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33753/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33753/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-15","end_date":"2026-10-15","start_time":"17:30:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Thesis Director: Prof. M. The Petrichor installation aims to restore rain’s central role and encourage reflection on its presence.
\r\n
\r\nThe installation consists of two parts:
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
A 1-square-meter funnel that collects rainwater while amplifying its sound. The funnel is modeled after a flower—the bromeliad—which naturally collects rainwater. The water is then channeled into the second part of the installation.
\r\n\t.
\r\n\t
A wooden cabinet containing 63 plastic containers, each holding 5 liters. All the containers are connected to one another by a system of pipes; the rainwater fills the containers from the bottom up. The 10 containers at the bottom of the cabinet are marked in blue; this corresponds to the minimum daily water intake for one person, as defined by the WHO, which is 50 liters. The containers above them—totaling 265 liters—represent the average water consumption of a person in Switzerland, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. This cabinet highlights the contrast between these two volumes. By relating these figures to the collected rainwater, the installation demonstrates that water remains a limited resource and is therefore a major challenge for the world today and in the future.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
The installation has aesthetic and auditory elements designed to enliven the campus and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. His documentaries address contemporary issues such as the crisis of democracy, the economic crisis, and the rise of populism, using dramatic techniques similar to those found in fiction. Among them, *Connu de nos services* (1997) addresses the scandal surrounding the political dossiers compiled by the Federal Police in the 1970s and 1980s. *Mais im Bundeshuus / Le Génie helvétique* (2003), one of Swiss cinema’s major box-office hits, follows the work of a parliamentary commission tasked with drafting a law on genetic engineering. *The Blocher Experiment* (2013) sparked intense controversy. *Cleveland vs. Wall Street* (2010), about the subprime mortgage crisis, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival (Directors’ Fortnight) and nominated for a César Award in France. His film *The Paris Opera* (2017) was subsequently widely distributed around the world. With this film, which drew more than 200,000 viewers to theaters, Jean-Stéphane Bron won the Swiss Film Award in the Best Documentary category for the third time in 2018. In 2021, Jean-Stéphane Bron released *Cinq nouvelles du cerveau*, a feature-length film that explores various mind-boggling questions related to advances in the fields of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Between December 2021 and May 2022, he filmed the series *Ma rue de l’Ale* for RTS on his own street in Lausanne; the series was a huge hit with audiences.
\r\n
\r\nExploring reality through the eyes of those who shape it. Jean-Stéphane Bron’s unique art lies not merely in presenting the facts, but in understanding both the people involved and the systems within which they operate—systems that shape their actions.
\r\n
\r\nPartner: Visions du réel
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-03T18:19:57","last_modification_date":"2026-09-22T13:55:33","link_label":"Programme complet des Culturelles","link_url":"https://www.epfl.ch/campus/art-culture/fr/les-culturelles/les-culturelles-dautomne-2026/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Forum Rolex","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20E1%20240","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/3/?format=json"],"speaker":"Jean-Stéphane Bron, réalisateur ","organizer":"Festival Les Culturelles (Pôle Culture VPI)","contact":"Véronique Mauron Layaz","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"cinéma, documentaire, jean-stéphane bron","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121711/","category":{"id":9,"code":"MANIF","fr_label":"Événements festifs et culturels","en_label":"Cultural events","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/2/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/21/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json"]},{"id":72610,"title":"Meet the TTO - October 2026","slug":"meet-the-tto-october-2026","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/meet-the-tto-october-2026","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33855/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33855/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33855/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-15","end_date":"2026-10-15","start_time":"11:30:00","end_time":"12:15:00","description":"A monthly gathering with the Technology Transfer Office team in a relaxed and informal setting.
\r\n
\r\nConnect with the team to explore intellectual property, strategies for creating commercial value from your academic work, and technology transfer practices.
\r\n
\r\nDiscussions may cover\r\n
\r\n\t
the inventive aspects of your research,
\r\n\t
patenting and commercial potential,
\r\n\t
software and AI/ML use,
\r\n\t
training data,
\r\n\t
and licensing terms for startups and companies.
\r\n
\r\nAccess: Open to the EPFL community (startup excluded)
\r\n
\r\nUpcoming dates: 12 November, and 10 December 2026","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-17T14:35:33","last_modification_date":"2026-09-17T15:07:31","link_label":"webpage","link_url":"https://www.epfl.ch/research/technology-transfer/explore-ask-learn-with-your-tto/","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"KNOVA, Building J, 2nd floor, EPFL Innovation Park","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==QIJ%202%20138","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"","organizer":"EPFL TTO","contact":"Bea Arnold & The robot must perceive a ball travelling at high speed, estimate its position and spin, predict its trajectory, decide how to respond, and execute a precise motion, all while interacting with an intelligent and unpredictable opponent.
\r\nIn this talk, I will present Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed at Sony AI that progressed from learning basic racket skills to competing with elite human players. I will discuss the complete system behind this progression: high-speed visual perception, reinforcement learning, simulation, robot control, and the iterative sim-to-real process that enabled policies trained in simulation to perform on a real robot. Beyond table tennis, ACE provides a case study in what it takes to move from impressive robotic demonstrations to robust physical intelligence. I will share some of the lessons we learned about combining learning with control, using real-world failures to improve simulation, and designing AI systems that can adapt and act under the speed, uncertainty, and constraints of the physical world.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nMireille El Gheche is a Lead Research Scientist at SoftBank Robotics, working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. Her expertise spans reinforcement learning, computer vision and perception, simulation, optimization, and real-world robotic systems, with a strong focus on translating research advances into robust physical systems.
\r\nPrior to joining SoftBank Robotics, Mireille was a Staff Research Scientist at Sony AI in Zurich, where she led research on Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed to compete with elite and professional human players. Before joining Sony AI, Mireille conducted academic research at EPFL and the University of Bordeaux, working across computer vision, and applied AI, including applications in medical AI. Her broader research interests lie in physical AI and intelligent robotic systems that can perceive, learn, adapt, and act in complex real-world environments.
\r\n ","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-23T10:33:38","last_modification_date":"2026-10-05T11:59:06","link_label":"Registration required","link_url":"https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/HbwUm7bFrd","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SG 0213","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%200213","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/j/63790840787?pwd=OHuE2cuqmmbEZ5yeZiGhkDpQpZqjLx.1","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Dr. Mireille El Gheche","organizer":"EPFL AI Center","contact":"Nicolas Machado","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"AI, Robotics","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121895/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/417/?format=json"]},{"id":72754,"title":"Exploring the ∞-categorical semantics of homotopy type theory","slug":"exploring-the-categorical-semantics-of-homotopy--2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/exploring-the-categorical-semantics-of-homotopy--2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33968/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33968/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33968/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-15","end_date":"2026-10-15","start_time":"10:00:00","end_time":"11:00:00","description":"
This talk is meant to give an overview of the semantics of HoTT in (∞,1)-categories, tackling the key challenge of rigidification: the process of bridging homotopy-coherent notions phrased in models of higher categories such as quasicategories, and their type-theoretical counterparts that must account for the inherent strictness of type theory.
\r\nAfter quickly recalling the usual categorical semantics of extensional Martin-Löf type theory within locally cartesian closed category, the plan is to present some useful ideas to carry over some of the argument to the higher setting.
