Abstract
\r\nAround 30% of cancers are preceded by chronic inflammation which occurs at the site where tumors will develop. However, whether this oncogenic process, particularly observed in the intestine, can be initiated by a specific immune cell population remains unknown. We recently identified two distinct effector T cell populations capable to initiate the oncogenic transformation of a healthy intestinal epithelium (Fesneau et al., Nat Immunol. 2024; Brewer et al., Nat. Rev. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.

The EPFL Latsis Symposium 2026: “Decoding the Cell: Modeling, Predicting, and Engineering Cellular States” will be held on October 29-30, 2026, at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

\r\nThis international gathering will bring together leading scientists in single-cell analysis, computational modeling, and cellular engineering to explore how recent breakthroughs in multi-omics technologies, predictive algorithms, and synthetic biology are reshaping our understanding of cellular function.

\r\nThrough interdisciplinary talks and discussions, the symposium will spotlight advances in single-cell multi-modal data integration, predictive modeling of cell identity and behavior, and the engineering of synthetic cell states. By connecting researchers across experimental and computational domains, the event aims to establish new conceptual and technological frameworks for modeling and controlling cellular systems.

Le projet Unearthed de l’artiste Rahel Oberhummer est une aventure visuelle et scientifique au cœur du développement de micro-organismes contenus dans le pergélisol de la montagne Muot da Barba Peider (Schafberg) en Engadine et collectés par l'Institut fédéral de recherches sur la forêt, la neige et le paysage (WSL). Cette collection préserve des micro-organismes provenant de régions menacées telles que les Alpes et l'Arctique et compte déjà plus de 2000 spécimens.
\r\n
\r\nL’artiste a sélectionné des levures, bactéries et champignons souvent vieux de 12’000 ans, qu’elle a cultivés dans son propre studio et photographiés tous les deux jours. Les différents micro-organismes sont déposés sur un fond d’agar pour qu’ils puissent se développer. Leur évolution est rapide et hasardeuse. La documentation est méthodique : plus de 13'300 photographies ont été prises représentant des instantanés de matière vivante.

\r\nDeux séries de photographies ont été produites : l’une se concentre sur des monocultures, dans lesquelles une souche microbienne sélectionnée occupe une boîte de Pétri et se propage largement. En adaptant les méthodes d'inoculation et les milieux de culture, différentes impulsions sont déclenchées. La deuxième série fait cohabiter plusieurs organismes différents. La lutte pour les nutriments dans le milieu de culture ainsi que les symbioses qui peuvent se développer entre les microbes sont documentées. La pratique d’atelier se mêle à la pratique de laboratoire.

\r\nL’exposition
\r\n
\r\nL’exposition Unearthed présente 18 photographies de plusieurs micro-organismes différents évoluant dans les boîtes circulaires qui les abritent. Filaments, textures, entrelacs, pointillés, cercles produisent des configurations abstraites spectaculaires. Les couleurs enchantent et vivifient les formes en turbulente circulation et en constante métamorphose. Les photographies pointent le sublime de l’extraordinaire variété des cellules : la naissance du vivant.
\r\nLes photographies de Rahel Oberhummer révèlent deux nécessités indissociables : d’une part celle de comprendre le vivant même dans ses organismes les plus simples et d’autre part de le préserver. Parallèlement, il s’agit de créer des images qui manifestent la qualité visuelle des formes et des couleurs de ces micro-organismes. Notre rapport à la nature exige l’admiration de sa beauté. Aujourd’hui, des artistes comme Rahel Oberhummer s’engagent dans une double mission : participer activement à des processus scientifiques et créer des images sensibles tout autant que savantes.

\r\n
\r\nRahel Oberhummer (*1991, Loèche-les-Bains) est diplômée de la HEAD, Genève. Elle a étudié aussi à la Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhague, à la Hochschule für Kunst und Design de Lucerne et au Billy Blue College of Design à Sydney. Au début de l’année 2026, elle a obtenu une résidence de trois mois à Hanoï, au Vietnam, dans le cadre d’un séjour de recherche soutenu par Pro Helvetia et accueilli par l’espace Exutoire. Elle vit et travaille à Vevey.
\r\nLa relation entre les structures sociales humaines et les formes de vie non humaines est au cœur de son approche artistique. Rahel Oberhummer se concentre sur les interactions subtiles entre les humains et l'environnement, avec une attention soutenue pour les écosystèmes dont nous dépendons et que nous mettons pourtant en danger. Des questions se posent, que l'artiste explore à travers une recherche scientifique autant qu’artistique.

The 2027 edition of the CROSS program calls upon researchers at EPFL and the University of Lausanne to submit proposals for joint projects that bring the natural sciences and engineering together with the social sciences and humanities.

\r\nThrough this annual call for projects, CROSS provides competitive grants to support new seed research endeavors that have the potential to grow into full–scale interdisciplinary research projects.

\r\nNowadays almost all artificial synthetic nitrogen-containing organic compounds (N-C bonding) are prepared via ammonia (NH3, the Haber-Bosch product). The ultimate research goal of our group is to synthesize nitrogen-containing organic compounds efficiently and directly from N2 gas as the nitrogen source, bypassing the NH3-depended synthetic pathway, mainly via metal-mediated or catalyzed dinitrogen functionalization.1

\r\nAt this presentation, I will briefly introduce two results recently realized in my research group. One result is about the transformation and mechanism on efficient first-step and second-step N2 electrophilic functionalization of LnCr-N2 metal dinitrogen complexes.2 The other result is on the synthesis of nitrogen-containing organic compounds via LiNCNLi formed from N2 gas and carbon by synergizing the heterogeneous synthetic approach with the homogeneous synthetic methodology.3

A summer school taking place this September will bring together EPFL and ETH Zurich PhD students to explore how uncertainty can become a productive resource in design and fabrication through a hands-on construction robotics challenge.
\r\n
\r\nThe program combines lectures in architecture, robotics, and work psychology with the full-scale construction of a timber structure from irregular timber stock, using an ABB industrial robot in a human-robot fabrication workflow.
\r\n
\r\nNo previous experience in construction robotics is required, only curiosity.
\r\n
