Traditional live-cell fluorescent probes face two critical technical challenges:\r\n
\r\n\t
How to make fluorescent probes brighter and more photostable.
\r\n\t
How to make fluorescent probes gentler to minimize the photodamage of organelles.
\r\n
\r\nBased on the fundamental principles of photochemistry and biochemistry, we have developed a new generation of live-cell imaging probes that far surpass traditional probes in brightness, photostability, and biocompatibility. These probes enable long-term super-resolution imaging of mitochondria, insulin vesicle secretion, plasma membrane dynamics, lysosomes, and more. Our representative achievements include: The PK Mito and PK Zinc dye series, widely used in mitochondrial and insulin secretion imaging. The BD series of novel fluorophores, in conjunction with self-labeling tags, offer general protein labeling strategies with superior optical properties compared to fluorescent proteins.
\r\n
\r\n==================================================
\r\n
\r\nBrief Biography:
\r\n
\r\nDr. Zhixing Chen, Associate Professor
\r\nCollege of Future Technology
\r\nPeking University
\r\n
\r\nDr. Zhixing Chen is a tenured associate professor at the College of Future Technology, Peking University. These exciting developments are accompanied by new fundamental challenges that arise regarding the safety and reliability of these increasingly complex systems due to imperfect learning, system unknowns, and uncertain environments. Statistical tools for uncertainty quantification have gained popularity due to their ability to deal with these challenges. However, their guarantees rely on i.i.d. data, an assumption that is violated when control actions change the underlying data distribution.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will provide new insight to design safe controllers under distribution shifts using robust conformal prediction (CP). I will begin by advocating for the use of CP due to its simplicity, generality, and efficiency as opposed to existing optimization-based verification techniques. I will then provide an introduction to CP and summarize existing work that uses CP to design probabilistically safe controllers in dynamic environments. Subsequently, we will look into interactive settings where the system’s behavior may change the environment's behavior, and vice versa. This circular dependency creates an interaction-driven distribution shift that invalidates existing CP guarantees. To deal with this problem, we propose an iterative framework that episodically updates the controller while robustly maintaining safety guarantees by quantifying the potential impact of a controller update on the environment's behavior. We realize this via adversarially robust CP where we perform a regular CP step in each episode using observed data under the current controller, but then transfer safety guarantees across controller updates by analytically adjusting the CP result to account for distribution shifts. Lastly, I will show how these ideas extend to handling policy-induced distribution shifts that arise when using barrier/Lyapunov functions to control uncertain systems.
\r\n
\r\nBiography:
\r\nLars Lindemann is currently an Assistant Professor for Algorithmic Systems Theory in the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zürich. The framework is general and applicable to many real-world scenarios with complex non-linear dynamics and unknown domains. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, including: (i) ultrahigh instantaneous electric fields at the air–water interface driving HO− à HO• + e− radicals from hydroxide ions; (ii) water’s comproportionation into H2O•+ and H2O•−; and (iii) partial dehydration of interfacial H+ and HO− followed by radical formation. In contrast, our laboratory experiments reveal that H2O2 formation is due to the reduction of dissolved O2 at water– solid interfaces, i.e., with no role for the air–water interface beyond O2 mass transport4-6. Based on these findings, I will present four diagnostic criteria against which any existing or future mechanistic proposal should be assessed. Our approach reconciles the claims of spontaneous H2O2 formation within established physical chemistry and extends naturally to other claims of anomalous microdroplet reactivity.
\r\n
\r\nReferences:
\r\n(1) Mehrgardi, M. He pioneered the bottom-up synthesis of graphene nanoribbons, establishing on-surface synthesis as a major new direction in nanoscience, and has since extended this work to topological states, open-shell nanographenes and quantum spin chains.","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-14T10:43:28","last_modification_date":"2026-09-14T10:43:41","link_label":"Website","link_url":"https://www.empa.ch/web/s205/roman-fasel","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"MXF 1","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MXF%201","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Prof. Roman Fasel, EMPA, Zürich","organizer":"Prof. Gregor Jotzu, Prof. Esther Amstad & Prof. Fabien Sorin","contact":"Prof. Gregor Jotzu, Prof. Esther Amstad & Prof. Fabien Sorin","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121785/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/314/?format=json"]},{"id":72685,"title":"IMX Colloquium - Towards life-inspired soft matter dynamics and functionalities","slug":"imx-colloquium-towards-life-inspired-soft-matter-d","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/imx-colloquium-towards-life-inspired-soft-matter-d","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33987/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33987/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33987/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-12","end_date":"2026-10-12","start_time":"13:15:00","end_time":"14:15:00","description":"
Biological systems have already paved several routes for bioinspired materials, e.g., for structural colours, wetting, adhesion, and mechanical properties. They have largely involved equilibrium or kinetically trapped properties. By contrast, biological systems allowing multifunctional properties are characteristically dissipatively and dynamically adaptive and incorporate homeostatic feedback mechanisms to regulate the dynamic states. They also typically use signal transduction to mediate the signal from the sensory elements to the responsive sites, unlike the classic man-made stimuli responsive materials. These concept suggest avenues towards more complex life-like functions in soft matter. Herein, optically driven hydrogel systems are presented to drive homeostatically controlled thermal oscillations and to mediate signal transduction via thermal intermediate signalling (1). On the other hand, biological magnetoreception in elasmobranch organisms involves electromagnetic induction (EMI) and suggests avenues for bioinspired electrical signal transductions. We show magnetic profile recognition of translocated magnetically encoded soft matter objects using electrical intermediate signaling by EMI and decoding the magnetic information with machine learning (2). Combination of high stiffness and promoted dynamics for self-healing has turned challenging to combine. Self-healing hydrogels, still combining high tensile stiffness close to that of skin were shown by using polymers upon nanoconfinement in 2D-nanosheet layered confinements (3). Finally, we show trainable actuations in bilayer gel actuators (4). Ever more complex responses can be created, such as mimicking the Pavlovian classical conditioning (5), all paving ways for growingly life-like functions for soft robotics and interfacing with biology.
\r\n
\r\n1. H. Formerly Research Associate at EPFL's Urban Transportation Systems Laboratory (LUTS) and an EPFL Data Champion.
\r\n
\r\n\"In October 2022, a fleet of ten drones spent four days filming traffic across the smart city of Songdo, South Korea, producing terabytes of 4K aerial video. This talk follows what happened next: how that raw footage became a connected set of openly available research outputs. The project released two datasets (vehicle trajectories and annotated aerial imagery), three reusable software tools, a ready-to-use machine learning model, an interactive online demo, and a peer-reviewed open access paper tying everything together, each one cross-linked, citable, and archived for the long term. Using this as a worked example, I will share practical lessons on making research outputs findable, reusable, properly licensed, and cited, including a few surprises about which parts the community valued most.\"
\r\n
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
Talk 2 | DISDRODB: a decentralized data base of drop size distribution observations, and much more
\r\n
\r\nBy Prof. Alexis Berne – Associate Professor, Head of Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory, EPFL ENAC
\r\n
\r\n\"The raindrop size distribution is a crucial information for atmospheric sciences, remote sensing and communications. Its current observations (from disdrometers) are rather spread between countries and institutions with heterogeneous variables and formats, hampering easy and broad access to public analysis-ready data sets.
