Just as simple models from decision theory provide context for understanding the decisions of complex humans, so too can they for complex AI systems. Bayesian decision theory considers an agent receiving a signal that is correlated with the state, choosing an action, and obtaining a payoff that depends on both the state and action. With Bayesian updating and the revelation principle, the signal becomes a posterior belief and the decision problem becomes a scoring rule. Given a scoring rule, baseline performance is the optimal score under the prior; benchmark performance is the optimal score under the posterior; and the optimal scoring rule — framed as a mechanism design problem — maximizes the difference between them. The talk reviews this theory and applies it to (a) evaluate prediction as a service, (b) behavioral experiments on human-AI decision making, (c) develop proper scoring rules for text (e.g. for training language models to hallucinate less).
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nShort bio:
\r\nProf. Hartline’s research introduces design and analysis methodologies from computer science to understand and improve outcomes of economic, legal, and AI systems. Bimodality is common, but trimodality—that is, the ability to successfully navigate between aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial environments—is relatively rare. Multimodality is also challenging to achieve in engineered devices, vehicles, and robots; however, several animals are capable of regularly (and easily) traversing environmental boundaries. In this talk, we will outline several of the general adaptations that living organisms use to locomote between land, air, and water. We will then present recent work on the biomechanics and fluid dynamics of trimodal aquatic insects. These insects exhibit hybrid walking-swimming gaits when transitioning from land to shallow water; they also leverage surface tension, buoyancy, fluid drag, and aerodynamic forces to take off into flight directly from the water surface. They also display underwater agility, using their legs as paddles to propel themselves rapidly as they seek prey and/or escape from predators. They also have interesting morphological features to enable these transitions, including superhydrophobic wings and hemelytra, as well as dense setae lining the metathoracic legs. These bristle-like features create shape-morphing appendages for efficient swimming, and are also used to lever the insect’s body off the deforming water surface during takeoff. In this talk, we will present data from all three locomotor modes and discuss their implications for both fundamental biology and ecology as well as bioinspired engineering and technology development.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Dr. Margaret L. These exciting developments are accompanied by new fundamental challenges that arise regarding the safety and reliability of these increasingly complex systems due to imperfect learning, system unknowns, and uncertain environments. Statistical tools for uncertainty quantification have gained popularity due to their ability to deal with these challenges. However, their guarantees rely on i.i.d. data, an assumption that is violated when control actions change the underlying data distribution.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will provide new insight to design safe controllers under distribution shifts using robust conformal prediction (CP). I will begin by advocating for the use of CP due to its simplicity, generality, and efficiency as opposed to existing optimization-based verification techniques. I will then provide an introduction to CP and summarize existing work that uses CP to design probabilistically safe controllers in dynamic environments. Subsequently, we will look into interactive settings where the system’s behavior may change the environment's behavior, and vice versa. This circular dependency creates an interaction-driven distribution shift that invalidates existing CP guarantees. To deal with this problem, we propose an iterative framework that episodically updates the controller while robustly maintaining safety guarantees by quantifying the potential impact of a controller update on the environment's behavior. We realize this via adversarially robust CP where we perform a regular CP step in each episode using observed data under the current controller, but then transfer safety guarantees across controller updates by analytically adjusting the CP result to account for distribution shifts. Lastly, I will show how these ideas extend to handling policy-induced distribution shifts that arise when using barrier/Lyapunov functions to control uncertain systems.
\r\n
\r\nBiography:
\r\nLars Lindemann is currently an Assistant Professor for Algorithmic Systems Theory in the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zürich. Perfect t-embeddings were recently introduced as a key tool for proving that the gradient of the dimer height function converges to that of the Gaussian Free Field in a canonically associated metric, under suitable technical assumptions. After introducing the notion of a t-embedding, we will describe a construction of perfect t-embeddings for regular hexagons of the hexagonal lattice. As a consequence, these constructions yield a new proof of convergence of fluctuations of the dimer height function to the Gaussian Free Field in the conformal structure induced by the limiting maximal surface.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-10-01T16:38:56","last_modification_date":"2026-10-01T16:38:56","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"CM 1 517","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%20517","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Marianna Russkikh","organizer":"Prof. Martin Hairer","contact":"Juliana Velasquez","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/122018/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/403/?format=json"]},{"id":72736,"title":"PChem Seminar - Karl-Heinz Ernst","slug":"pchem-seminar-karl-heinz-ernst","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/pchem-seminar-karl-heinz-ernst","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33952/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33952/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33952/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-22","end_date":"2026-10-22","start_time":"17:00:00","end_time":"19:00:00","description":"Chirality Meets Magnetism: Spin Selectivity and Molecular Organization
\r\n
\r\nSince Pasteur's discovery of molecular chirality, understanding how molecular handedness couples to its physical environment has remained a fundamental challenge. Of particular interest is its interplay with magnetism, anticipated already by Pierre Curie in 1894, as well as the emergence and propagation of chirality through molecular organization. Here, we explore these connections at surfaces, from the interaction of individual chiral molecules with magnetic substrates and spin-polarized electrons to the collective organization of molecular chirality in extended two-dimensional structures. First, we demonstrate enantioselective adsorption of individual helicene molecules on ferromagnetic cobalt surfaces. Spin- and chirality-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy reveals that left- and right-handed helicenes preferentially adsorb on Co islands with opposite out-of-plane magnetization, establishing a direct correlation between molecular handedness and substrate magnetization. Second, tunneling-conductance measurements through individual enantiomers reveal magnetochiral asymmetries of up to 50%, demonstrating spin-selective electron transport at the single-molecule level and excluding ensemble effects as the sole origin of chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS). Finally, we report the first observation of aperiodic chiral molecular tiling arising from topological self-assembly on a silver surface, demonstrating how molecular chirality can propagate from individual building blocks into complex collective organization.","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-10-01T19:17:53","last_modification_date":"2026-10-02T08:39:11","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"CH G1 495","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CH%20G1%20495","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Karl-Heinz Ernst (EMPA)","organizer":"Sascha Feldmann","contact":"sascha.feldmann@epfl.ch","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"pcseminar","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/122021/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/14/?format=json"]},{"id":72737,"title":"PChem Seminar - Adriana Pietropaolo","slug":"pchem-seminar-adriana-pietropaolo","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/pchem-seminar-adriana-pietropaolo","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33982/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33982/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33982/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-11-12","end_date":"2026-11-12","start_time":"17:00:00","end_time":"18:00:00","description":"Theory-Guided Design of Chiral Hybrid Perovskites
\r\n
\r\nChiral halide perovskites combine the outstanding optoelectronic properties of the inorganic
\r\noctahedra with the chirality of the organic cations, enabling control over light polarization and electron
\r\nspin1. This makes them promising platforms for spin-optoelectronics and quantum technologies2,3.
\r\nDesigning them rationally, however, requires understanding how chirality is transferred from the
\r\norganic cations to the inorganic framework, and how this transfer governs their chiroptical and spin
\r\nproperties4.
\r\nIn this seminar I will present a simulation framework that combines ab initio molecular dynamics, freeenergy
\r\nmethods and time-dependent density functional theory to predict circular dichroism (CD),
\r\ncircularly polarized luminescence (CPL), absorption and emission dissymmetry factors (gabs, glum) in
\r\nchiral perovskites. Applied to (R/S-MBA)2PbI4 and its tin analogue, this approach shows that
\r\nenantiomeric excess acts as a continuous dial for chiroptical properties5. The response follows a
\r\ncooperative majority-rule mechanism, which we validated against experiments across the full
\r\nenantiomeric series. Electronic-structure analysis links the two characteristic CD bands to distinct
\r\nband-edge and organic–inorganic transitions.
\r\nI will also discuss how chemical strain and hydrostatic pressure can tune the intensity and sign of CPL
\r\nemission6, and how structural chirality, spin-orbit coupling and lattice distortions may shape spin
\r\npolarization. Together, these results outline predictive design rules for chiral perovskites with tailored
\r\noptical and spin functionalities.
\r\n
\r\nReferences
\r\n1.
