He later co-led architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, earning international recognition, including the Silver Lion for Promising Young Participant at the 16th Biennale of Venice, before refocusing on his own practice, JTA, from 2019 onward. JTA is worldwide published and awarded.
\r\n
\r\nPart of School Lecture Series, Autumn 2026, Learning Vol.1
\r\nWe are told that learning is no longer confined to the school or the university, but it has become a continuous process that involves the totality of life. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. We will ponder whether these things are only ‘tools’ to achieve a result or can still be vital places for learning.
\r\n
\r\nRecordings available on YouTube
\r\n@epflarchitectureschool
\r\n
\r\nGraphic Design
\r\nRoman Karrer & Sandi Gazic","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-08-14T16:36:48","last_modification_date":"2026-08-17T13:15:17","link_label":"Poster School Lecture Series Fall 2026","link_url":"https://go.epfl.ch/school-lecture-series-fall-2026","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Foyer SG","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room=%3DSG%20294.22&dim_floor=2&lang=fr&dim_lang=fr&tree_groups=centres_nevralgiques_grp%2Cmobilite_acces_grp%2Crestauration_et_commerces_grp%2Censeignement%2Cservices_campus_grp%2Cequipements_grp&tree_group_layers_centres_nevralgiques_grp=&tree_group_layers_mobilite_acces_grp=metro&tree_group_layers_restauration_et_commerces_grp=&tree_group_layers_enseignement=guichet_etudiants&tree_group_layers_services_campus_grp=information_epfl&tree_group_layers_equipements_grp=&baselayer_ref=grp_backgrounds&map_x=2532923&map_y=1152547&map_zoom=12","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Jo Taillieu","organizer":"EPFL Architecture","contact":"EPFL Architecture","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121434/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json"]},{"id":72347,"title":"School Lecture Series: Thomas Friberg + Sophie Piticco, pool Architektur / EPFL Architecture","slug":"school-lecture-series-thomas-friberg-sophie-piticc","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/school-lecture-series-thomas-friberg-sophie-piticc","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33607/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33607/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33607/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-27","end_date":"2026-10-27","start_time":"18:30:00","end_time":"20:00:00","description":"Building for Disassembly
\r\nTemporary Sports Halls, Huts and a Hotel
\r\nGrowing student numbers and the need to renovate numerous school facilities prompted the Canton of Zurich to seek a temporary solution for sports facilities. We will ponder whether these things are only ‘tools’ to achieve a result or can still be vital places for learning.
\r\n
\r\nRecordings available on YouTube
\r\n@epflarchitectureschool
\r\n
\r\nGraphic Design
\r\nRoman Karrer & Sandi Gazic","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-08-14T16:47:31","last_modification_date":"2026-08-17T13:20:45","link_label":"Poster School Lecture Series Fall 2026","link_url":"https://go.epfl.ch/school-lecture-series-fall-2026","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Foyer SG","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room=%3DSG%20294.22&dim_floor=2&lang=fr&dim_lang=fr&tree_groups=centres_nevralgiques_grp%2Cmobilite_acces_grp%2Crestauration_et_commerces_grp%2Censeignement%2Cservices_campus_grp%2Cequipements_grp&tree_group_layers_centres_nevralgiques_grp=&tree_group_layers_mobilite_acces_grp=metro&tree_group_layers_restauration_et_commerces_grp=&tree_group_layers_enseignement=guichet_etudiants&tree_group_layers_services_campus_grp=information_epfl&tree_group_layers_equipements_grp=&baselayer_ref=grp_backgrounds&map_x=2532923&map_y=1152547&map_zoom=12","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Paolo Tombesi","organizer":"EPFL Architecture","contact":"EPFL Architecture","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121437/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json"]},{"id":72517,"title":"NO/NC (Normally open/ Normally closed) - Installation","slug":"nonc-normally-open-normally-closed-installation","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/nonc-normally-open-normally-closed-installation","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33783/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33783/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33783/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-13","end_date":"2026-10-13","start_time":"18:30:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Opening reception on October 13 at 6:30 p.m. (with a concert at 7pm)
\r\nExhibition on view October 13–24
\r\n
\r\nThe Pôle Culture (VPI) and Archizoom are collaborating on an installation by the artist duo Andrea Anner & Thibault Brevet (AATB) that extends Archizoom’s exhibition Do Robots Dream of Construction Sites? and is part of the Les Culturelles festival.
\r\n
\r\nNO/NC is a new work by AATB featuring a swarm of inflatable barriers that move autonomously through the space to form temporary structures and barricades, preventing visitors from moving about and crossing the space freely.
\r\n
\r\nWhoever controls and decides where and for whom to build walls also decides how we form a cohesive society—a society cemented by fictitious boundaries—while fragmenting and dissolving those deemed undesirable.
\r\n
\r\nThe walls of the installation take on an almost ghostly quality. They would flood our living spaces with landscapes, selfies, cats, vehicles, and meals scattered as far as the eye can see.
\r\n
\r\nEvery day, we produce images, messages, and data that we store on servers and in the cloud. But what becomes of this digital output?
\r\nWhite Shadow is a series of photographs created by collectif_fact (Annelore Schneider and Claude Piguet). It was produced using photogrammetry, a technology that transforms photographs into 3D models. The images are generated from data sourced from online libraries. The result is a dizzying architecture so pervasive that it erects barriers and isolates individuals from one another. A society is emerging, grappling with media saturation, sensory overload, and a crushing ecological impact. A world is emerging where images have taken over, colonizing and transforming space until they become the only reality still visible.
\r\nThis narrative is a metaphor that prompts reflection on our responsibility regarding our daily digital output and its consequences for the environment.
\r\n
\r\ncollectif_fact
\r\ncollectif_fact, founded by Annelore Schneider (1979, Neuchâtel) and Claude Piguet (1977, Neuchâtel), explores the economics of the contemporary image through video and photography, drawing on speculative narratives and fiction. Their works have been exhibited at institutions such as the Maison européenne de la photographie (Paris), the Centre d’art contemporain (Geneva), the Swiss Cultural Center (Paris), the Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lianzhou Foto Festival, the Metropolis Art Center (Beijing), and the Fotomuseum Winterthur. They recently received the Landis & Gyr residency in London, the New Point of View Award from This is Short (European Short Film Network), and the Best Short Film Award at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA). On this occasion, the awardee will give a conference on the EPFL Campus. Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to hear from one of the most influential figures in contemporary computer science.
\r\n
\r\nConference abstract
\r\nIt's 2026, and the answer to every problem today seems to be a multiple choice exercise of selecting answers from: AI, Agents, LLMs or machine learning. Is our future really just all about prompt engineering?
\r\n
\r\nAt a time when artificial intelligence, autonomous agents and large language models seem to be presented as the answer to every challenge, Margo Seltzer offers a thought-provoking perspective on the value of simplicity in computer science and machine learning. She will demonstrate how simpler and more transparent approaches can deliver performance comparable to that of the most sophisticated models, while providing greater interpretability, more efficient use of resources and a more natural way of addressing issues of fairness and privacy. The lecture will also explore a theme that lies at the heart of her career: collaboration. Drawing on her own experience of collaborative research, Margo Seltzer will explain how working together can broaden one’s impact, help overcome imposter syndrome, and enable individuals to discover and develop their unique strengths.
\r\n
\r\nAbout Prof. Margo Seltzer
\r\nProf. Margo Seltzer is Co-Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), where she moved after two decades as a Full Professor at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1992 from the University of California, Berkeley. A pioneering computer systems researcher, she is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors, including the 2023 ACM Athena Lecturer Award and the USENIX Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Alongside her academic career, Margo Seltzer is an entrepreneur: she co-founded Sleepycat Software, maker of Berkeley DB, a widely used embedded database engine later acquired by Oracle. A recognized leader in her field, she is also a devoted mentor to young women in computer science and founded the \"Systers Lunch,\" the original diversity gathering at SOSP, the flagship conference of the systems research community.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-28T19:19:24","last_modification_date":"2026-09-30T10:39:26","link_label":"REGISTRATION","link_url":"https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/29LjxMdyae","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"SG 1138","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%201138","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"","organizer":"","contact":"Nicolas Hocq","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121974/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json"]},{"id":72515,"title":"A Million-Year Picnic - Film screening and discussion with artist Pauline Julier","slug":"a-million-year-picnic-film-screening-and-discussio","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/a-million-year-picnic-film-screening-and-discussio","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33785/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33785/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33785/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-12","end_date":"2026-10-12","start_time":"18:15:00","end_time":"19:45:00","description":"
Video installation, 4K, color, loop, variable duration, 2024
\r\nRunning time: 1 hour 30 minutes
\r\n
\r\nScreening followed by a discussion with Pauline Julier and Eric Vautrin
\r\n
\r\nPauline Julier’s film is set in a mystical, misty landscape that could be Mars or an unknown planet, but it is actually a theater set.
