Achieving net-zero transport requires coordinated action across energy carriers, carbon flows and mitigation of other pollutants. This talk presents a multiscale engineering framework for sustainable mobility, organised around three complementary pathways: fuel development (F), greenhouse-gas management (G) and mitigating harmful emissions beyond CO2 (H). First, using solar-driven CO2 conversion as an example, I will show how the precise transport of light, heat and fluids enables the coordinated design of materials, devices and systems, maximising solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency. Second, I will explore on-board carbon capture for road and maritime transport, together with distributed carbon-removal networks that use existing vehicles, ventilation systems and transport infrastructure. Third, I will discuss particulate matter generated by brake and tyre wear, illustrating how materials engineering can balance filtration efficiency, pressure drop and energy demand. Finally, the talk considers how techno-economic assessment and the interplay between technology, business and policy can move laboratory innovations towards industrial deployment.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography: Dr Xiangkun (Elvis) Cao (https://profiles.imperial.ac.uk/elvis.cao) is currently an Assistant Professor at Imperial College London, holding joint appointments in Mechanical Engineering and the Grantham Institute. It was produced using photogrammetry, a technology that transforms photographs into 3D models. The images are generated from data sourced from online libraries. The result is a dizzying architecture so pervasive that it erects barriers and isolates individuals from one another. A society is emerging, grappling with media saturation, sensory overload, and a crushing ecological impact. These exciting developments are accompanied by new fundamental challenges that arise regarding the safety and reliability of these increasingly complex systems due to imperfect learning, system unknowns, and uncertain environments. Statistical tools for uncertainty quantification have gained popularity due to their ability to deal with these challenges. However, their guarantees rely on i.i.d. data, an assumption that is violated when control actions change the underlying data distribution.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will provide new insight to design safe controllers under distribution shifts using robust conformal prediction (CP). I will begin by advocating for the use of CP due to its simplicity, generality, and efficiency as opposed to existing optimization-based verification techniques. I will then provide an introduction to CP and summarize existing work that uses CP to design probabilistically safe controllers in dynamic environments. Subsequently, we will look into interactive settings where the system’s behavior may change the environment's behavior, and vice versa. This circular dependency creates an interaction-driven distribution shift that invalidates existing CP guarantees. To deal with this problem, we propose an iterative framework that episodically updates the controller while robustly maintaining safety guarantees by quantifying the potential impact of a controller update on the environment's behavior. We realize this via adversarially robust CP where we perform a regular CP step in each episode using observed data under the current controller, but then transfer safety guarantees across controller updates by analytically adjusting the CP result to account for distribution shifts. Lastly, I will show how these ideas extend to handling policy-induced distribution shifts that arise when using barrier/Lyapunov functions to control uncertain systems.
\r\n
\r\nBiography:
\r\nLars Lindemann is currently an Assistant Professor for Algorithmic Systems Theory in the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zürich.
\r\n
\r\n>>> Site web de l'artiste Rahel Oberhummer
\r\n
\r\nVernissage le jeudi 7 mai 2026 à 18 :30
\r\nExposition visible jusqu’au 11 octobre 2026
\r\nHall du RLC / entrée libre
\r\n
\r\nImage : Dioszegia patagonica 001, Pochonia/Metacordyceps chlamydosporia 205, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum 511, Potato Dextrose Agar with sepia ink, 2022.
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-03-16T17:17:43","last_modification_date":"2026-05-26T15:56:40","link_label":"","link_url":"","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Hall du Rolex Learning Center","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20G1%2094.12","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":[],"speaker":"Rahel Oberhummer, artiste","organizer":"Pôle Culture EPFL","contact":"Véronique Mauron Layaz","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120096/","category":{"id":5,"code":"EXPO","fr_label":"Expositions","en_label":"Exhibitions","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json"]},{"id":72537,"title":"Understanding and controlling diffusion models for image generation","slug":"understanding-and-controlling-diffusion-models-f-2","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/understanding-and-controlling-diffusion-models-f-2","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33778/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33778/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33778/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-09","end_date":"2026-10-09","start_time":"17:00:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Thesis Directors: Prof. S. The bar for safe decision-making rises as these systems enter safety-critical, real-world settings where they must perform well under uncertainty. Our work shows that physicality is a resource against the two kinds of uncertainty they face: intentional (or adversarial), where data is manipulated by malicious agents, and natural, where aspects of the environment are simply unknown. Most of this talk concerns intentional uncertainty. Here, one way to exploit physicality is by using communication as a sensor. Because the signals robots exchange are difficult to forge, they carry evidence that can be cross-validated to yield a quantifiable likelihood that an agent's data is trustworthy. This is the foundation of cy-trust, in which stochastic observations of trust model an agent's trustworthiness probabilistically from physical rather than cryptographic evidence. Each neighbor's contribution is then weighted by its trust value. Under this framework, we show that consensus, distributed optimization, and other core coordination tasks admit almost-sure convergence with bounded deviation from their nominal performance, even when malicious agents exceed half of a node's connectivity, past the classical Byzantine bound. We support this finding with both theory and hardware experiments under adversarial attack. Against natural uncertainty, we show that real-time sensing can be folded into rollout-based reinforcement learning, where the same machinery reweights futures rather than neighbors. We apply this idea to routing a fleet of robots to stochastically appearing demand and, with Project CETI, to the first autonomous robotic rendezvous with sperm whales at sea. Finally, we preview some of our future work combining trust with long-horizon sequential decision-making, targeting planning that stays provably resilient when the data informing the plan may itself be corrupted.
\r\n
\r\nStephanie Gil is the John L.
