Cette année, <a href=\"https://guelpa.ch/\">Séverin Guelpa</a>, artiste basé à Genève, travaillant entre le Valais (les glaciers), les Etats-Unis (les déserts) et le Chili (Salar d’Atacama), propose une série de grandes sculptures évoquant les tremblements - géologiques, politiques ou écologiques - qui secouent notre monde.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>L’artiste a récupéré des pierres dans une carrière suisse</strong>, il ajoute des éléments réfléchissants, il compose avec des déchets métalliques et du bois de charpente. Ces œuvres, en équilibre-déséquilibre, manifestent les forces et les tensions, ainsi que les chutes, les glissements et les catastrophes possibles. Ces œuvres font aussi référence, de près ou de loin, aux événements intervenus récemment dans les villages de Blatten (Valais) ou de Brienz (Grisons), désormais célèbres pour leurs impressionnants glissements de terrain.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nElles interprètent librement cette période mouvementée que nous traversons et qui nous oblige à réfléchir à nos propres limites. Comme un écho à la période de turbulences que nous traversons, elles réfléchissent une forme de précarité, d’imprévisibilité ou encore de fragilité. Les morceaux d’acier poli interagissent directement avec le Rolex Learning Center qu’ils mettent en scène dans le tourbillon du monde.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<em>Tremblement </em>aborde des questions constructives mais aussi humaines et collectives. A l’allure à la fois technique et fragile, ces sculptures consistent en des mises en tension de matières et de formes, comme maintenues en équilibre par l’énergie de leur mise en œuvre. Ces éléments seront réalisés en collaboration avec différentes entreprises locales, dont une scierie du Val de Bagne, une carrière de la vallée du Rhône, une entreprise de façades métalliques à Fribourg et une autre de vitres à Bulle. A chaque fois, il s’agira au possible de recourir à des chutes de production ou à du bois issu d’abattage après tempête. Son travail s’ancre dans les territoires fragiles, exposés, menacés – ces zones du globe où les tensions entre nature, ressources, économie et survie humaine sont les plus palpables. Depuis plusieurs années, il arpente déserts, zones arides, espaces industriels ou géographies en transition, pour y extraire une forme de vérité physique et poétique.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nDepuis 2014, Séverin Guelpa a été invité à participer à de nombreuses expositions, biennales et événements importants à travers le monde. Il a notamment exposé au Palais de Tokyo à Paris, au Museu do Amanhã à Rio de Janeiro, et a participé à des biennales internationales telles que celles de Mongolie, d’Athènes ou encore de Larnaca à Chypre. Ces invitations témoignent de la reconnaissance d’un travail engagé, qui place la matière et le territoire au cœur d’une réflexion artistique contemporaine.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIl a fondé la <a href=\"https://guelpa.ch/matza/\">plateforme collective MATZA</a> qui s’est déployée dans le désert du Mojave (2014–2017), sur le glacier d’Aletsch (2016–2018), sur les îles Kerkennah en Tunisie (2017) puis en Colombie (Medellín et Cúcuta) et au Kenya (Nairobi) entre 2022 et 2023.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nAprès une formation en sciences politiques, Séverin Guelpa a obtenu un master en arts visuels à la HEAD – Genève. Historically, research has primarily focused on predicting the onset of buckling—that is, the loss of the original configuration under excessive loading—rather than on understanding how structures evolve in the post-buckling regime. Recently, however, the study of buckling has experienced a renaissance, with post-buckling mechanical responses increasingly exploited to achieve new functionalities, for example enhancing fracture resistance in stretchable electronics and flexible displays.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nWhile most existing studies consider elastically deforming systems whose behaviour arises primarily from geometric nonlinearities, this talk presents examples in which geometric effects are coupled with nonlinear constitutive responses, giving rise to new post-buckling mechanisms. First, we investigate the buckling of hard, perforated (“holey”) structures that exhibit auxetic behaviour but, unlike their purely elastic counterparts, undergo post-buckling softening. The resulting negative stiffness is captured using a pseudo-plastic constitutive model that describes nonlinearities emerging from the structural microarchitecture.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nWe then apply a similar framework to examine the buckling of beverage cans largely filled with liquid under axial compression. Whereas empty cylindrical shells typically develop periodic buckling patterns that break both axial and circumferential symmetry, liquid-filled cylinders buckle axisymmetrically. The resulting ring-shaped buckles are localized and emerge sequentially, progressively covering the can surface. We show that this behaviour arises from nonlinear, spatially anisotropic hoop stresses that soften and subsequently re-stiffen during compression.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography: </strong>Draga Pihler-Puzovic is a Reader in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester and a core member of the Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics. Her research focuses on fluid–structure interactions, low-Reynolds-number flows, and the deformation of slender solid structures. Yet, computational efforts of the last 2+ decades have primarily focused on reactions involving small molecules (C<sub>1-2</sub>, O<sub>1</sub>, N<sub>1</sub>) that are activated by high-symmetry sites of extended surfaces at low surface coverages. In contrast, most industrial processes involve large multi-functional molecules (e.g., cyclic hydrocarbons, nitroarenes etc.) that are activated by low-symmetry sites of nanoclusters under high surface coverages. Machine learning methods have emerged as a powerful approach to bridge this gap between first principles models and reality. Using physics-inspired machine learning trained on small datasets by active learning, we identify next-generation bimetallic Pt catalysts for dehydrogenating liquid organic hydrogen carriers like methylcyclohexane. Using machine learned potentials, we rationalize why functionalized nitroarenes adsorb in self-assembled monolayer-like arrangements on Pd catalysts, consistent with <em>in situ</em> surface characterization. We distil our learnings into a forward-looking viewpoint of the do’s and don’ts in using machine learned potentials to predict the surface structure and reactivity of multi-functional molecules.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography</strong><br>\r\nTej has been a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore since Dec. 2019. He obtained his PhD in chemical engineering from Purdue University in Dec. 2017 (advisor: Prof. Jeffrey Greeley) and thereafter completed his postdoctoral training at Stanford University (advisor: Dr. Frank Abild-Pedersen). His group employs first principles methods and kinetic modelling to understand how catalysts operate at the atomic scale. In addition to managing his research programme, Tej is a Faculty Fellow of the NTU Honors College and the Director of the undergraduate programme in chemical and biomolecular engineering. Tej has received the Outstanding Young Principal Investigator of the AIChE, Singapore Local Section (2022) and the Nanyang Education Award (2022) for excellence in teaching. It presents around a hundred paintings on wood, didactic works produced between 1997 and 2007 in the teaching units of the painter Arduino Cantàfora. They suggest a possible way of making, between thought and <em>actio</em>, where drawing and painting structure a concept and become an essential language for expressing the founding idea of a project. In mythology and storytelling, rivers and fountains bring life, healing, and uncontrollable power. Since modernism, we have pursued watertight environments, sealing interiors while buried streams and pipes persist beneath our streets and walls. When a leak appears, this fiction collapses. Forgotten infrastructures surface, and suppressed ecologies emerge—moss, humidity, micro-habitats. Leaks become reminders of water’s formative power, suggesting possible futures for architecture and urban space.</em><br>\r\n<br>\r\nTruwant + Rodet + is a Basel-based architecture practice founded in 2017. The diverse background of its partners informs a curious and interdisciplinary practice connecting architecture with landscape, furniture design, research and teaching. Their work focuses on the transformation of existing structures and on the relationship between building, context and landscape, understanding architecture as part of a broader territorial framework.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn 2017, they received the Swiss Art Award for “A Pavilion.” In 2018, they co-founded the Basel cultural platform dasVerein with Melissa Freudiger. In 2020, together with ASBR, they won the competition for the renovation of the Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris, completed in 2026. In 2023, they won the competition for the adaptive reuse of the former Nauentor postal center in Basel with Bruther and Jan Kinsbergen, as well as the competition for affordable housing in Basel with Clauss Kahl Merz. Since 2023, they have been guest teachers at EPFL Lausanne.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis lecture is part of the School Lecture Series<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>COMMUNITY VOL.2</strong><br>\r\nSeven exemplary projects and case studies<br>\r\n<br>\r\nCommunity is an ambivalent concept. It involves both gathering through shared customs and exclusion. Some claim that inclusive communities do not exist. Recent history shows people more often unite through exclusion than inclusion. However, communities are not sealed. Philosopher Roberto Esposito explains that community ‘is not a property or territory to defend but a void, a debt, and a gift to others’, reminding us of our otherness.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis lecture series explores the topic of community through architecture. How does architecture explore, define, or enable communities? Can architects collaborate directly with communities, bypassing institutional entities? How can design convey a collective experience?
