Rice paddy soils are rich in organic carbon, and the conventional understanding has been that organic carbon enhances microbial arsenic methylation by fueling microbial activity. This presentation will describe a series of recent investigations — spanning pure culture to greenhouse-scale experiments — that challenge this conceptual model. First, the presentation will describe the role of carbon catabolite repression (CCR) in regulating cellular uptake and subsequent enzymatic methylation of arsenite. A combination of biosensor, gene expression, and arsenic speciation analyses demonstrate that sugars lead to CCR and a decrease in arsenic methylation, while low molecular weight organic acids do not impact arsenite uptake. The presentation will then examine couplings between methanogenesis and arsenic demethylation, wherein a greater abundance of methylotrophic carbon substrates (methanol, methylamines) promote arsenic demethylation by methanogens and limit the accumulation of methylated arsenic compounds. A genome-resolved metatranscriptomic analysis of anaerobic soil slurry experiments resolved links between methylotrophic substrate utilization and arsenic demethylation, while greenhouse experiments showed that higher levels of methanogenesis in soils were associated with lower concentrations of methylated arsenic in rice grains. Taken together, these results provide a more nuanced understanding of how utilization of distinct carbon substrates impacts arsenic methylation-demethylation dynamics, and provides mechanistic insights into how paddy soil management practices influence arsenic speciation in rice.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography:\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Dr. Matthew Reid is an associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University and directs the Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Engineering Research Group. It involves both gathering through shared customs and exclusion. Some claim that inclusive communities do not exist. Recent history shows people more often unite through exclusion than inclusion. However, communities are not sealed. Philosopher Roberto Esposito explains that community ‘is not a property or territory to defend but a void, a debt, and a gift to others’, reminding us of our otherness.
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture series explores the topic of community through architecture. How does architecture explore, define, or enable communities? Can architects collaborate directly with communities, bypassing institutional entities? How can design convey a collective experience? Seven emerging and established architectural figures respond to these questions through their work, which spans film, exhibitions, and communitarian buildings.
\r\n
\r\nSave the dates and join us on Tuesday evenings!", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-06T16:52:02", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-09T11:15:16", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Foyer SG", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%20294.22", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "MAIO, Anna Puigjaner", "organizer": "EPFL Architecture", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "school lecture series", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119612/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71003, "title": "Imaging Lunch: A Practical Introduction to Machine Learning for Vision Applications", "slug": "imaging-lunch-a-practical-introduction-to-machine", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/imaging-lunch-a-practical-introduction-to-machine", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32391/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32391/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32391/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-29", "end_date": "2026-04-29", "start_time": "11:00:00", "end_time": "13:00:00", "description": "Registration
\r\n
\r\nAbstract
\r\nThis workshop is designed for EPFL researchers interested in building effective, automated computer vision systems for scientific applications. During the workshop, we will review and explain the main steps of a machine learning-based computer vision project, from problem definition to image acquisition, annotation, training, validation, and inference. We will illustrate these steps in a practical way, by building a real computer vision application together until we can run it live on a camera. Along the way, we will discuss important concepts (data drift, overfitting, data augmentation) and observe how they manifest themselves in practice. We will also share tips and tricks to help you tackle your own computer vision challenges.
\r\n
\r\nPrerequisites:
\r\nBasic familiarity with Python, image analysis, and machine learning concepts is desirable, but not strictly necessary.
\r\n
\r\nLevel:
\r\nBeginner / Intermediate
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-01-30T11:40:06", "last_modification_date": "2026-01-30T11:40:06", "link_label": "Registration", "link_url": "https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc1NukuuzIzzMnbDZkfudvj1M7wDJY6JeWQKoQrcl1ZIVFcUw/viewform?usp=header", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CE 1 711.2", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CE%201%20711.2", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Mallory Witwer", "organizer": "Center for Imaging", "contact": "Cecilia Carron", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119528/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/284/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71462, "title": "Honorary Lecture, Prof. Marco Bakker", "slug": "honorary-lecture-prof-marco-bakker", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/honorary-lecture-prof-marco-bakker", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32811/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32811/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32811/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-05", "end_date": "2026-05-05", "start_time": "17:30:00", "end_time": "19:30:00", "description": "Date: 05 May 2026
\r\nTime: 17:30 - 19:30
\r\nIntroduction by Dean Katrin Beyer and IA director Pier Vittorio Aureli. Alongside a 'plurality of time', we are interested in the 'plurality of space'. Rather than transparency, it is the arrangement of different worlds face-to-face or side-by-side that creates this impression of density and richness in relationships.
\r\n
\r\nTo craft sustainable development, we believe that, alongside a body of fundamental knowledge, a spirit can be cultivated through tireless attempts, including failure, to develop a 'knowledge of the hand' capable of finding new forms of expression. The countless experiences that we have accumulated at MANSLAB over the past 15 years can undoubtedly be best recounted in the form of anecdotes. An anecdote is a historical detail or a characteristic of customs or character that becomes a short, entertaining story evoking emotions such as laughter or horror.
\r\n
\r\nThe students’ work that I am about to present illustrates certain tested, refined and proven principles, such as the indestructible link between ideas and the hand through the slow and joyful acquisition of knowledge; the economy of means to highlight the essential; errors and non-linearity as inspiring methods in the design process; and the cultivation of empirical, manual and physical knowledge that prioritises grasping sensory, supra-sensory and memory-based reality and is capable of creating new spaces. The launch of the book ANEKDOTA will take place at the same event.
\r\n
\r\nAbout the speaker:
\r\nMarco Bakker is born in Harlingen, Netherlands, in 1960. He first earned a degree in Civil Engineering from HTS Leeuwarden, before continuing his studies in Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, including spending a year abroad at EPFL. Following four years of experimentation in architecture and photography, he founded the firm Bakker & Blanc Architects (BABL) with Alexandre Blanc in 1992. At the same time, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Vincent Mangeat and visiting professor Kaschka Knapkiewicz at EPFL. From 2003 to 2009, he taught architectural design and theory at the BFH in Burgdorf.
\r\n
\r\nSave the dates and join us on Tuesday evenings!
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-06T16:53:55", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-09T11:15:04", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Foyer SG", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%20294.22", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Joud Beaudoin, Lorraine Beaudoin", "organizer": "EPFL Architecture", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "school lecture series", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119613/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 70314, "title": "10th Rencontres de l'EDAR: Autonomy and Abstraction", "slug": "10th-rencontres-de-l-edar-autonomy-and-abstraction", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/10th-rencontres-de-l-edar-autonomy-and-abstraction", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32136/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32136/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32136/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-05-12", "end_date": "2026-05-13", "start_time": "08:30:00", "end_time": "20:00:00", "description": "Les Rencontres de l'EDAR is the annual meeting of the Doctoral program in Architecture and Sciences of the City, aimed at gathering the entire EDAR community. Its 10th edition, organized in collaboration with the Institute of Architecture, will be entitled Autonomy and Abstraction and will deal two fundamental dimensions of scholarly inquiry. The two days event, open to the public, will be structured in the form of thematic sessions alternating with keynotes and round tables.
\r\n
\r\nAbstraction will be approached in its classical philosophical meaning, consistent with the view that understanding requires the mind to grasp the universal apart from the particulars in which it is embodied. In this sense, abstraction is the mental operation through which the essential structure of a subject is drawn out from its contingent features, allowing researchers to discern the general principles that render their object intelligible. This conceptual withdrawal does not negate the concrete but clarifies what endures beyond the variability of specific instances.
\r\n
\r\nAutonomy will be presented as a distinct yet complementary notion: the capacity of a discipline to reflect upon itself through its own internal laws and modes of reasoning. It entails a temporary suspension of external frameworks so that the discipline may be understood from within, according to the coherence of its concepts and the logic that shapes its questions. While abstraction deals with the apprehension of universal principles, autonomy has to do with the conditions under which these principles operate within a disciplinary horizon.
\r\n
\r\nOnce defined as separate notions, abstraction and autonomy will be brought into constructive relation, for both require a measured intellectual distance that enables the essential to be articulated. In this context, participants will be invited to suspend, for a moment, the temporal and spatial dimensions that ordinarily situate their work, in order to concentrate on the internal logics that define it. The possibility of abstraction and autonomy will be explored not as a doctrine but as an open interpretative field through which doctoral researchers may examine their subjects at the level of foundational assumptions and operative laws.
\r\n
\r\nThese Rencontres will emphasise that both abstraction and autonomy admit multiple interpretations, each opening further avenues for reflection. Their plurality will form the ground of the collective discussion. Participants will therefore be encouraged not only to explore but to present the internal laws and guiding principles that structure their research, testing how their projects appear when considered within a horizon freed, temporarily, from external contingencies.", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2025-11-06T15:36:23", "last_modification_date": "2025-12-18T14:33:46", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "AAC 020", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room=%3DAAC%200%2020&dim_floor=0&lang=fr&dim_lang=fr&tree_groups=centres_nevralgiques_grp%2Cmobilite_acces_grp%2Crestauration_et_commerces_grp%2Censeignement%2Cservices_campus_grp%2Cequipements_grp&tree_group_layers_centres_nevralgiques_grp=&tree_group_layers_mobilite_acces_grp=metro&tree_group_layers_restauration_et_commerces_grp=&tree_group_layers_enseignement=guichet_etudiants&tree_group_layers_services_campus_grp=information_epfl&tree_group_layers_equipements_grp=&baselayer_ref=grp_backgrounds&map_x=2532835&map_y=1152556&map_zoom=14", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "", "organizer": "EDAR Doctoral Program in Architecture and Sciences of the City, Institute of Architecture", "contact": "Elena Cogato Lanza, [email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "EDAR, IA", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/118431/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/72/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] } ] }
