Does our professional identity determine our needs and methods? By comparing the measuring traditions of different actors, the lecture will clarify objectives and characteristics of the ruling tools in use. The idea is to show how measuring has always responded to multiple instrumental ideas of accuracy, which have in turn affected the production of information and the organization of work.
\r\n
\r\nPaolo Tombesi
\r\nAn architect by training and a collector by nature, Paolo Tombesi has a long-nurtured interest in the relationship between the intellectual dimension of building and the socio-technical aspects of its construction. Several decades ago, upon the completion of a PhD on the distribution of technical knowledge in building, he started to collect rulers – a compulsion maintained while working at EPFL as professor of construction and architecture since 2016. Between 2017 and 2020, he directed the university’s Institute of Architecture and the City. Prior to his appointment in Lausanne, he held the Chair in Construction at Melbourne University.
\r\n
\r\nPart of School Lecture Series, Autumn 2026, Learning Vol.1
\r\nWe are told that learning is no longer confined to the school or the university, but it has become a continuous process that involves the totality of life. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. We will ponder whether these things are only ‘tools’ to achieve a result or can still be vital places for learning.
\r\n
\r\nRecordings available on YouTube
\r\n@epflarchitectureschool
\r\n
\r\nGraphic Design
\r\nRoman Karrer & Sandi Gazic","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-08-14T16:47:31","last_modification_date":"2026-08-17T13:20:45","link_label":"Poster School Lecture Series Fall 2026","link_url":"https://go.epfl.ch/school-lecture-series-fall-2026","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"Foyer SG","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room=%3DSG%20294.22&dim_floor=2&lang=fr&dim_lang=fr&tree_groups=centres_nevralgiques_grp%2Cmobilite_acces_grp%2Crestauration_et_commerces_grp%2Censeignement%2Cservices_campus_grp%2Cequipements_grp&tree_group_layers_centres_nevralgiques_grp=&tree_group_layers_mobilite_acces_grp=metro&tree_group_layers_restauration_et_commerces_grp=&tree_group_layers_enseignement=guichet_etudiants&tree_group_layers_services_campus_grp=information_epfl&tree_group_layers_equipements_grp=&baselayer_ref=grp_backgrounds&map_x=2532923&map_y=1152547&map_zoom=12","url_online_room":"","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Paolo Tombesi","organizer":"EPFL Architecture","contact":"EPFL Architecture","is_internal":"False","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Tout public","en_label":"General public"},"registration":{"id":3,"fr_label":"Entrée libre","en_label":"Free"},"keywords":"","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121437/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/4/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/32/?format=json"]},{"id":72556,"title":"Swiss Federal Office of Energy - SOUR Call 1-2026: Supply Security on the Path to a Net-Zero Energy System","slug":"swiss-federal-office-of-energy-sour-call-1-2026-su","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/swiss-federal-office-of-energy-sour-call-1-2026-su","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33806/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33806/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33806/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-12-01","end_date":"2026-12-01","start_time":null,"end_time":null,"description":"
SWEET (Swiss Energy Research for the Energy Transition) is a funding programme of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) that supports research and innovation projects contributing to Switzerland’s Energy Strategy 2050 and climate objectives through several funding instruments, including SWEET, SWEETER, and SOUR, the latter focusing on unconventional and potentially transformative approaches.
\r\n \r\n\r\n
The second SOUR call focuses on ensuring a secure and affordable energy supply during Switzerland’s transition to a net-zero energy system. The call is led by Prof. emeritus Marco Mazzotti, who oversees project evaluation, monitoring, and funding decisions, with support from SFOE experts. If milestones are not met, he may terminate projects and reallocate any funds that become available.
\r\n
\r\nThe guiding theme of the call is “Supply Security on the Path to a Net-Zero Energy System.” It seeks high-risk, high-potential “game-changing” technologies that could substantially improve Switzerland’s energy security while advancing the transition to net-zero, e.g., by increasing renewable production, enabling better integration into the energy system, or reducing energy consumption.
\r\n
\r\nThe key idea is not incremental improvement: projects should aim for a major technological leap, starting around TRL 3–4 and reaching at least TRL 6, with commercialisation considered from the outset. In other words, SOUR is looking for unconventional technologies that could fundamentally shift the cost/performance frontier and eventually achieve significant market deployment in Switzerland.
\r\n
\r\nFunding duration: The total funding for this call is CHF 4 Mio., with which at most 4 projects will be supported. Each project may apply for up to CHF 1.33 million over a maximum period of three years. The start of the projects is planned for April 2027.
\r\n
\r\nApplications: Applications for SOUR funding proceed through a single proposal and require the formation of a team, a work programme, and a budget.
\r\n
\r\nProject Team: A team is led by one Principal Investigator (PI) and may contain one or more Co-PIs. Because SOUR funding is intended for small teams, the team size should be conducive to producing a major leap and enters into the evaluation.
