It can enable design reuse, foster collaboration, and support workforce development. ESP (Embedded Scalable Platforms) is an open-source research platform for system-on-chip (SoC) design that combines a modular architecture with an agile design methodology. The ESP architecture simplifies the design and prototyping of heterogeneous chips with multiple RISC-V processor cores and dozens of loosely coupled accelerators, all interconnected by a scalable network-on-chip. The ESP methodology promotes system-level design while accommodating different specification languages and design flows.
\r\n
\r\nESP's capabilities have enabled a small team, primarily composed of graduate students, to realize two SoCs of increasing complexity, each within a few months. To generate good probabilistic forecasts, we must first be able to evaluate how good a forecast is. The evaluation of probabilistic forecasts focuses on two aspects of forecast performance: forecast accuracy and forecast calibration. Forecast accuracy refers to how 'close' the forecast is to the corresponding observation, which can be quantified using proper scoring rules. Forecast calibration considers whether probabilistic forecasts are trustworthy. While most scoring rules and calibration checks treat all possible outcomes equally, some outcomes are often of more interest than others when evaluating forecasts, and one could argue that these outcomes should therefore be emphasised during forecast evaluation. For example, extreme outcomes typically lead to the largest impacts on forecast users, making accurate and calibrated forecasts for these outcomes particularly valuable. In this talk, we discuss methods to focus on particular outcomes when evaluating probabilistic forecasts. We review weighted scoring rules, which allow practitioners to incorporate a weight function into conventional scoring rules when calculating forecast accuracy, and we demonstrate that the theory underlying weighted scoring rules can readily be extended to forecast calibration. Using this, we introduce methods to evaluate the calibration of probabilistic forecasts for extreme events.
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-02T09:46:57", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-13T10:35:58", "link_label": "", "link_url": "https://www.epfl.ch/schools/sb/research/math/statistics-seminars/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CM 1 517", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%20517", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Sam Allen, KIT", "organizer": "Rajita Chandak", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119928/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/288/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71560, "title": "Growth and Dissolution Mechanisms of Siderite Scale on Iron under Environmental Transients", "slug": "growth-and-dissolution-mechanisms-of-siderite-sc-2", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/growth-and-dissolution-mechanisms-of-siderite-sc-2", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32897/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32897/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32897/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-17", "end_date": "2026-04-17", "start_time": "17:00:00", "end_time": null, "description": "
Thesis Directors: Dr. S. This progress is exciting, but it also raises a verification challenge. Sophisticated proofs, whether written by humans or generated by AI, require substantial expertise and time to check, and AI increases this burden by producing candidate proofs at scale. Formalization, the translation of mathematical content into proof assistant code, provides a promising way forward. Manual formalization, however, still requires substantial effort and expertise. Autoformalization, using AI, is now showing key progress in addressing this bottleneck. In roughly one year, the state of the art has moved from barely formalizing undergraduate-level statements to automatically formalizing whole papers and textbooks. In this talk, I will present my work on the topic at EPFL and Math, Inc. More specifically, I will discuss autoformalization in the context of Sphere Packing in dimensions 8 and 24, the verification of AI solutions to conjectures using autoformalization, and the next steps in AI for mathematics.
\r\n
\r\nMore information
\r\nhttps://aiformath.epfl.ch/
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-04-14T09:56:59", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-14T11:04:54", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "BC 420", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==BC%20420", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/67078120700", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "", "organizer": "", "contact": "Host: Viktor Kuncak", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120366/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/50/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/151/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71411, "title": "Life Science Seminar: Hitoshi Kurumizaka", "slug": "life-science-seminar-hitoshi-kurumizaka", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/life-science-seminar-hitoshi-kurumizaka", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32843/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32843/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32843/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-20", "end_date": "2026-04-20", "start_time": "16:00:00", "end_time": "17:00:00", "description": "Title:
\r\nStructural molecular biology for the nucleosome as a regulator on genomic DNA
\r\n
\r\nAbstract:
\r\nIn eukaryotic cells, genomic DNA is highly compacted into chromatin through its association with histone proteins. The fundamental unit of chromatin, the nucleosome, consists of ~147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These nucleosomes are connected by linker DNA, forming a “beads-on-a-string” structure that enables efficient packaging of the genome.
\r\nBeyond structural compaction, nucleosomes play a central role in regulating genome function. They can restrict access to DNA and act as barriers to essential processes such as transcription, replication, and repair. At the same time, nucleosomes serve as key epigenetic platforms, where histone modifications and histone variants modulate chromatin structure and dynamics to control gene activity.
\r\nTo better understand these regulatory mechanisms, we employ biochemical and structural approaches to investigate nucleosome structure and dynamics. Our studies aim to elucidate how structural transitions of nucleosomes influence DNA accessibility and ultimately govern genomic regulation. I will present our recent structural and biochemical insights and discuss their implications for understanding nucleosome-mediated genome regulation.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nHitoshi Kurumizaka is a Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1995, he started his postdoctoral training at NIH in the USA, in the laboratory of Molecular Embryology (Alan Wolffe Lab), where he began chromatin research. In 1997, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist. He subsequently moved to Waseda University, where he served as Associate Professor and later as Professor of Molecular and Structural Biology. Since 2018, he has been Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the structural basis of chromatin and epigenetic regulation in eukaryotic genomes. In 2020, he established an in-house cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform to advance high-resolution structural studies of chromatin and genome-associated protein complexes. Professor Kurumizaka has made significant contributions to the field of chromatin biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleosomes and genome-associated protein complexes. His work has been published in leading international journals and has substantially advanced our understanding of chromatin architecture and epigenetic regulation.
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-19T22:57:43", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-01T14:33:48", "link_label": "Kurumizaka lab", "link_url": "https://www.iqb.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/lab/kurumizaka/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/64667340373", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "", "organizer": "Prof. Nicolas Thomä", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "Chromatin, Structural Biology, Cryo-EM, DNA, Transcription", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120129/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/26/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/111/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71384, "title": "Sustainable Buildings and Construction Summit", "slug": "sustainable-buildings-and-construction-summit", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/sustainable-buildings-and-construction-summit", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32734/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32734/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32734/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-20", "end_date": "2026-04-22", "start_time": null, "end_time": null, "description": "
The Sustainable Buildings and Construction Summit 2026 (20-22 April, Lausanne, Switzerland) convenes government officials alongside academics, private sector leaders, financiers, and civil society—converging policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to translate global sustainability commitments into practical solutions.
