There exists a critical Weber number which separates, on average, breaking from non-breaking bubbles. However, this limit is only defined in a statistical sense as an a priori stable bubble can encounter a large velocity or pressure fluctuation and break. In addition, real flows are rarely homogeneous and stationary. In this work, we aim at quantifying the probability for a bubble to break as a function of the time spent within the turbulence region and to rationalize the bubble breakup time.
\r\n
\r\nTo do so, running direct numerical simulations, we first characterize the linear stochastic deformations of bubbles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We show that a 1D model describing oblate/prolate deformations is sufficient to capture most of bubble deformations, as well as predicting bubble lifetime provided the forcing statistics and the bubble response are correctly parametrized. To further rationalize the forcing statistics measured in the DNS, we propose to decompose the turbulent flow field into a sequence of elementary flows and to characterize bubble dynamics in each of them. We identify two main effective flow candidates, namely the uniaxial straining flow (USF) and the biaxial straining flow (BSF). While the first one has received considerable attention, little is known on the dynamics of bubble in BSF. In this talk, we present the linear stability analysis of bubble deformations in this flow. We enlighten surprising drift modes moving upstream as well as a new deformation mode with azimuthal wave number m=2, which might explain some of the breakage observed experimentally in turbulence.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Bio:
\r\n\r\n
Aliénor Rivière is an SNSF Fellow at the Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Instabilities (LFMI) at EPFL, where she works with François Gallaire on the stability and dynamics of bubbles in model flows. Janne will present findings from a study of 105 university students comparing three conditions: unrestricted AI access, no access at all, and a \"timed\" condition where students could only turn to AI after first attempting the task on their own.
\r\n
\r\nDrawing on multiple pedagogical theories to build a decision rule for when access should open up, the results show that students in the timed condition outperformed those with unrestricted access on an objective post-test, and had a more accurate sense of their own understanding, without an explicit metacognitive prompting. Compared to withholding AI entirely, timed access also seemed to reduce task errors and time spent on task.
\r\n
\r\nJoin us to learn more about the topic and engage in further discussion.
\r\n
\r\n- - - - - - - - - - -
\r\nlunch&LEARN sessions are intended for anyone who teaches at EPFL.
\r\nThis session is hybrid and can be attended in person or followed via zoom.
\r\nMost sessions are recorded and can be found on the Center LEARN's YouTube channel.
\r\nTo get in touch with the team, to suggest a session, or to make inquiries, please send an email to lunchLEARN@groupes.epfl.ch
\r\n
","image_description":"","creation_date":"2026-09-24T15:53:46","last_modification_date":"2026-10-08T14:11:26","link_label":"Registration/zoom","link_url":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/9pBBuqZHQge7OmGTm0Kedg#/registration","canceled":"False","cancel_reason":"","place_and_room":"ME A3 31","url_place_and_room":"https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==ME%20A3%2031","url_online_room":"https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/9pBBuqZHQge7OmGTm0Kedg#/registration","spoken_languages":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=json"],"speaker":"Janne Rotter","organizer":"Center LEARN","contact":"lunchLEARN@groupes.epfl.ch","is_internal":"True","theme":"","vulgarization":{"id":2,"fr_label":"Public averti","en_label":"Informed public"},"registration":{"id":1,"fr_label":"Sur inscription","en_label":"Registration required"},"keywords":"lunch&LEARN, Center LEARN, teaching, learning, AI","file":null,"icalendar_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121926/","category":{"id":1,"code":"CONF","fr_label":"Conférences - Séminaires","en_label":"Conferences - Seminars","activated":true},"academic_calendar_category":null,"domains":[],"mementos":["https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/3/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/65/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/85/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/145/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/323/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=json","https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/432/?format=json"]},{"id":72517,"title":"NO/NC (Normally open/ Normally closed) - Installation","slug":"nonc-normally-open-normally-closed-installation","event_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/event/nonc-normally-open-normally-closed-installation","visual_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33783/200x112.jpg","visual_large_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33783/720x405.jpg","visual_maxsize_url":"https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33783/max-size.jpg","lang":"en","start_date":"2026-10-13","end_date":"2026-10-13","start_time":"18:30:00","end_time":null,"description":"
Opening reception on October 13 at 6:30 p.m. (with a concert at 7pm)
\r\nExhibition on view October 13–24
\r\n
\r\nThe Pôle Culture (VPI) and Archizoom are collaborating on an installation by the artist duo Andrea Anner & Thibault Brevet (AATB) that extends Archizoom’s exhibition Do Robots Dream of Construction Sites? and is part of the Les Culturelles festival.
\r\n
\r\nNO/NC is a new work by AATB featuring a swarm of inflatable barriers that move autonomously through the space to form temporary structures and barricades, preventing visitors from moving about and crossing the space freely.
\r\n
\r\nWhoever controls and decides where and for whom to build walls also decides how we form a cohesive society—a society cemented by fictitious boundaries—while fragmenting and dissolving those deemed undesirable.
\r\n
\r\nThe walls of the installation take on an almost ghostly quality. Nocera is the Patterson Rockwood Professor of Energy at Harvard University. Nocera is recognized for his discoveries in renewable energy, originating new paradigms that have defined the field of solar energy conversion and storage. Nocera created the field of proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) at a mechanistic level by making the first measurements that temporally resolved the movement of an electron coupled to a proton. On this experimental foundation, he provided the first theory of PCET. With PCET as a guiding framework, he invented the Artificial Leaf and the Bionic Leaf. The Artificial Leaf comprises Si coated with catalysts to capture the direct solar process of photosynthesis – the use of sunlight to split water to hydrogen and oxygen from neutral water, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The Bionic Leaf-C comprises a bio-engineered organism interfaced with the catalysts of the Artificial Leaf to capture the dark process of photosynthesis – the combination of carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce biomass and liquid fuels. The integration of the light and dark processes of the Artificial Leaf and the Bionic Leaf-C, respectively, allowed Nocera to develop a complete artificial photosynthesis — sunlight + air + water to biomass and liquid fuels. The Bionic Leaf-C is much more efficient than natural photosynthesis, exceeding the biomass efficiencies of natural photosynthesis by a factor of ×10 and biomass-to-fuels efficiencies by a factor of ×100. Extending this approach to the Bionic Leaf-N, Nocera has achieved a renewable and distributed Haber-Bosch synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen in air by coupling solar-based water splitting to a nitrogen and carbon fixing microorganism to produce a living biofertilizer, resulting in increased crop yields and early harvests. In the latest field trial for leafy vegetables (90% chemical replacement of urea ammonium nitrate), use of the biofertilizer on a 400-acre farm mitigated 153 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Additionally, the Bionic Leaf-N as a living biofertilizer avoids nitrogen runoff and thus has an important future role in sustainable farming. These science discoveries set the stage for the large scale and distributed deployment of solar energy fuels and food production using only sunlight, air and any water source. With such simple natural inputs, these discoveries are particularly useful to the poor, where large infrastructures for fuel and food production are not tenable.
\r\n
\r\nNocera’s research contributions have been recognized by several awards, some of which include the Leigh Ann Conn Prize for Renewable Energy, Italgas Prize, IAPS Award, Burghausen Prize, the United Nation’s Science and Technology Award, Firenze Award in Molecular Sciences, F. A. Cotton Medal, Clarivate Citation Laureate and from the American Chemical Society the Inorganic Chemistry, Harrison Howe, Kosolapoff and Remsen Awards and the FA Cotton Medal.
