 \, National Technical University of Athens (GR)\nAbstract:\nStarting in th
 e early 60’s and following the invention of lasers\, the laser remote se
 nsing (LiDAR) technique has been used to probe the terrestrial atmosphere.
  This powerful technique is based on signal analysis from the interaction 
 of matter with the laser beam\, which includes Rayleigh and Mie scattering
 \, Raman scattering\, resonance scattering\, fluorescence\, absorption\, D
 oppler shift and differential absorption and scattering. LiDAR has been ap
 plied to a wide range of environmental remote sensing applications.\n\nIn 
 this presentation we will quickly review the basic interactions between la
 ser and matter in the atmosphere (aerosols-clouds-gases)\, the hydrosphere
  and the biosphere. We will then focus on our LiDAR development efforts an
 d ongoing research on the vertical profiling of tropospheric water vapor\,
  ozone\, aerosols\, bioaerosols and clouds. We will then discuss applicati
 ons of these lidar retrievals to characterize sea pollution\, aerosol typi
 ng and air quality monitoring\, bioaerosol monitoring\, even tree health a
 ssessment. We discuss how our data is used to improve atmospheric models a
 nd forecasts and conclude with future directions and perspectives.\n\nShor
 t biography:\nProf. Alex. Papayannis (Dipl. Ing.\, DEA\, Ph.D.) is the Dir
 ector of the Laboratory of Optoelectronics\, Lasers and Applications and R
 esearch Professor of Atmospheric Physics\, Laser Technology and Laser Remo
 te Sensing\, at the National Technical University of Athens. He is a LiDAR
  expert in vertical profiling of atmospheric parameters\, aerosols\, cloud
 s and gases (O3\, H2O\, Glyoxal) in the troposphere\, in combination with 
 sun photometry\, satellite data\, in situ aerosol measurements and meteoro
 logical modelling. He has participated in 68 research projects (EU\, NASA\
 , ESA\, GAW-WMO\, INPE-Brazil\, CNRS-France and Greek National funds). He 
 is founder of the RAYMETRICS SA lidar company (www.raymetrics.com)\, which
  is the first lidar company in the world with customers in throughout Euro
 pe\, Americas\, Asia and Africa. He is founding member of the European lid
 ar Network (EARLINET)\, as well as member (2008-2015) and current Presiden
 t (2015-2023) of the International Coordination Group for Laser Atmospheri
 c Studies (ICLAS). He has served as Member of the Scientific Committee and
  Co-chair of more than 25 International Conferences\, related to lidar atm
 ospheric/meteorological applications. He has published 132 papers in peer-
 reviewed journals\, 6 Book chapters and 250 papers in peer-reviewed Intern
 ational Conferences Proceedings. He has received more than 8.120 citations
  (h-index 46) in Google Scholar. He has supervised more 15 Ph.D. students 
 and 60 M.Sc. Diploma Theses at NTUA.
