DESCRIPTION:Dr Alan James Bergmann\, Postdoctoral researcher\, ECOTOX Cent
 re EAWAG-EPFL\, Dübendorf\nAbstract:\nHumans and wildlife encounter poten
 tially toxic chemical mixtures in many environments and consumer products.
  We use bioassays to detect hazardous substances in complex mixtures\, inc
 luding those that target chemical analysis might miss. Of increasing inter
 est are in vitro bioassays performed in a “planar” format on high-perf
 ormance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) plates. Planar-bioassays first c
 hromatographically separate samples\, then detect biologically active subs
 tances (e.g. xenoestrogens\, genotoxicants) directly on HPTLC plates with 
 test organism cells. We have found that planar-bioassays are typically mor
 e sensitive than their counterparts in microtiter plates and can reduce in
 terferences from matrix components. By coupling to high-resolution mass sp
 ectrometry\, unknown chemicals detected with planar-bioassays can be ident
 ified. We are developing planar-bioassays and applying them to food packag
 ing\, tire wear particles\, and environmental matrices. This presentation 
 will introduce planar-bioassays with examples from our investigations at t
 he Ecotox Centre.\n\nShort biography:\nAlan Bergmann is from Washington St
 ate in the United States. He studied Toxicology at Western Washington Univ
 ersity and Oregon State University. Since 2017\, he has been a post-doctor
 al researcher with the Swiss Centre for Applied Ecotoxicology (Ecotox Cent
 re).
