DESCRIPTION:Deep Form is part of the AI + Architecture Lecture Series o
rganized by the Media and Design Lab\, focusing on the creative and genera
tive role that Machine Learning can have on architectural\, urban\, and te
rritorial design and research.\n\nFor the second session\, titled Deep For
m\, Frederick Chando Kim from MxD\, will welcome Andrew Witt and Matias d
el Campo to present and discuss their work related to methods\, findings\
, and concepts related to Machine Learning at an architectural and urban s
cale.\n\nThe lectures and discussion will be on Monday 13th December\, 18
 :00 – 19:30 at BC 420 and online: \nhttps://epfl.zoom.us/j/64272398290\
 n\n\nAbout the presenters:\n\nAndrew Witt [https://certainmeasures.com/] i
s a designer creating at the intersection of architecture\, geometry\, dat
a science\, and AI. Trained as both an architect and mathematician\, he h
as a particular interest in a technically synthetic and logically rigorous
approach to form. He is an Associate Professor in Practice in Architectu
re at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and co-founder\, with Tobias
 Nolte\, of Certain Measures\, a Boston/Berlin-based design and technology
studio that combines imagination and evidence for systemic and scalable ap
proaches to spatial problems. Their clients include large manufacturers\,
 material fabricators\, government agencies\, infrastructure companies\, in
vestment funds\, and cultural institutions. The work of Certain Measures i
s in the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou\, and has been exhibi
ted at the Pompidou\, the Barbican Centre\, Futurium\, and Haus der Kultur
en der Welt\, among others.\n\nDr. Matias del Campo [https://span-arch.org
/] is a registered architect\, designer\, and educator. He is an Associate
Professor at Taubman College for Architecture and Urban Planning\, Univer
sity of Michigan\, and director of the AR2IL – The Architecture and Arti
ficial Intelligence Laboratory at UoM. He conducts research on advanced de
sign methods in architecture\, primarily through the application of Artifi
cial Intelligence techniques\; collaborating with Michigan Robotics and th
e Computer Science department. Matias del Campo is the co-founder of the a
rchitecture practice SPAN. Their award-winning architectural designs are i
nformed by advanced geometry\, computational methodologies\, and philosoph
ical inquiry. SPAN gained wide recognition for the design of the Austrian
Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo\, and more recently for the Robot
Garden at the Ford Robotics Building. SPAN’s work was featured at the V
enice Architecture Biennale in 2012 and 2021\; ArchiLab 2013\, and the Arc
hitecture Biennale in Vienna and Buenos Aires in 2019. Solo shows include
“Formations\,” at the MAK in Vienna and the exhibition "Sublime Bodies
" at the Fab Union Gallery in Shanghai\, China. In 2013 SPAN expanded thei
r operations to Shanghai\, China\, where the practice is currently working
on building projects of various scales. He earned his Master of Architect
ure from the University of Applied Arts Vienna and his Ph.D. from the Roya
 l Melbourne Institute of Technology.
