CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:The EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research
(JPND) is the largest global research initiative aimed at tackling the cha
llenge of neurodegenerative diseases. This Joint Programme is funded by th
e participating countries’ funding agencies\, including the SNSF for Swi
 tzerland.\nFor the 2022 call\, the JPND initiative has announced a EUR 19
million transnational call for understanding the mechanisms of non-pharmac
 ological interventions.\n\nThis call for ambitious\, innovative\, multinat
ional and multidisciplinary collaborative research projects with a view to
promoting research aimed at improving the understanding of the mechanisms
and biological substrates that underlie non-pharmacological interventions
\, in order to tailor a holistic personalised treatment approach. The SNSF
has allocated CHF 1’000’000 for Swiss-based grantees from 3-4 researc
h groups.\nProposals must focus on one or several of the following neurode
generative diseases:\n\n	Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias\,\n	Par
 kinson’s disease and PD-related disorders\,\n	Prion diseases\,\n	Motor n
 euron diseases\,\n	Huntington’s disease\,\n	Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA)
\,\n	Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).\n\nTypes of research:\n\n\n	Determinin
g biomolecular and/or physical underpinnings of effects of non-pharmacolog
ical interventions\;\n	Examining the mechanisms of effective non-pharmacol
ogical interventions on the molecular and cellular level by applying cutti
ng-edge technologies\;\n	Identification of the mechanisms of non-pharmacol
ogical interventions within the brain\, using brain imaging\, electrophysi
ology and other equivalent state-of-the-art techniques\;\n	Identification
of biological\, psychological and social health markers and their associat
ions to allow the identification of modifiable risk factors amenable to no
n-pharmacological interventions and better predict and monitor the effects
of these interventions for future large-scale clinical studies\;\n	Elabor
ating modified concepts of non-pharmacological interventions with enhanced
efficacy based on a deeper understanding of the mechanisms\;\n	Identifica
tion of potential drug-target sites for a combination of pharmacological a
nd non-pharmacological interventions\;\n	Finding (individual) factors that
predict response to interventions.\n\nWho can apply:\n\n\n	International
consortia composed of 3-6 researchers from at least 3 different participat
ing countries. Partners from other countries can be part of the consortium
\, but must secure their own funding. If the proposal involves at least on
 e regular partner from an EU-13 country (i.e. Czech Republic\, Hungary\, L
atvia\, Poland\, Slovakia) or from Turkey\, the maximum number of regular
partners is extended to seven. Eligibility rules depend on the national fu
nding agencies.\n	Applicants can be based at universities (or other higher
education institutions)\, non-university public or private research insti
tutes\, hospitals and other health and social care settings\, as well as c
ommercial companies\, in particular SMEs. Collaborations with companies fr
om outside the traditional medical sector (e.g. computing\, artificial int
elligence) are welcome.\n\n\n\n	Swiss-based applicants: must be eligible f
or SNSF Project Funding (see EPFL Instructions for SNSF Project Funding) a
nd cannot participate in more than one proposal per call. The SNSF exclusi
vely funds research conducted for non-commercial purposes. Please contact
research@epfl.ch to verify your eligibility for the call. In case of sever
al overlapping SNSF projects\, all projects must significantly distinguish
themselves from each other.  \n\nFunding & Duration: min. CHF 50’000
and max. CHF 300’000 for 12-36 months (for this call\, the SNSF has al
located CHF 1M for 3-4 projects).\n\nTimeline of the call: \n\n\n	Deadline
  for pre-proposals: 1 March 2022 at 12:00 (noon) CET.\n	Deadline for full
proposals: 28 June 2022 at 12:00 (noon) CET.\n\nApplications must be submi
tted by the call deadlines via both the JPND online submission tool and my
 SNF.\nFor further information\, please have a look at the call webpage\, c
all guidelines\, call procedures (incl. evaluation criteria and scoring)\,
  instructions for Swiss-based applicants\, pre-proposal template\, \, as w
ell as the outcome of past calls.
