CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:The EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research
(JPND) is the largest global research initiative aimed at tackling the cha
llenge of neurodegenerative diseases. This Joint Programme is funded by th
e participating countries’ funding agencies\, including the SNSF for Swi
 tzerland.\nFor the 2022 call\, the JPND initiative has announced a EUR 19
million transnational call for understanding the mechanisms of non-pharmac
 ological interventions.\nThis call for ambitious\, innovative\, multinatio
nal and multidisciplinary collaborative research projects with a view to p
romoting research aimed at improving the understanding of the mechanisms a
nd biological substrates that underlie non-pharmacological interventions\,
in order to tailor a holistic personalised treatment approach. The SNSF h
as allocated CHF 1’000’000 for Swiss-based grantees from 3-4 research
groups.\nProposals must focus on one or several of the following neurodege
nerative diseases:\n\n	Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias\,\n	Parki
 nson’s disease and PD-related disorders\,\n	Prion diseases\,\n	Motor neu
 ron diseases\,\n	Huntington’s disease\,\n	Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA)\,
\n	Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).\n\nTypes of research:\n\n\n	Determining
biomolecular and/or physical underpinnings of effects of non-pharmacologic
al interventions\;\n	Examining the mechanisms of effective non-pharmacolog
ical interventions on the molecular and cellular level by applying cutting
-edge technologies\;\n	Identification of the mechanisms of non-pharmacolog
ical interventions within the brain\, using brain imaging\, electrophysiol
ogy and other equivalent state-of-the-art techniques\;\n	Identification of
biological\, psychological and social health markers and their associatio
ns to allow the identification of modifiable risk factors amenable to non-
pharmacological interventions and better predict and monitor the effects o
f these interventions for future large-scale clinical studies\;\n	Elaborat
ing modified concepts of non-pharmacological interventions with enhanced e
fficacy based on a deeper understanding of the mechanisms\;\n	Identificati
on of potential drug-target sites for a combination of pharmacological and
  non-pharmacological interventions\;\n	Finding (individual) factors that p
redict response to interventions.\n\nWho can apply:\n\n\n	International co
nsortia composed of 3-6 researchers from at least 3 different participatin
g countries. Partners from other countries can be part of the consortium\,
but must secure their own funding. If the proposal involves at least one
regular partner from an EU-13 country (i.e. Czech Republic\, Hungary\, Lat
via\, Poland\, Slovakia) or from Turkey\, the maximum number of regular pa
rtners is extended to seven. Eligibility rules depend on the national fund
ing agencies.\n	Applicants can be based at universities (or other higher e
ducation institutions)\, non-university public or private research institu
tes\, hospitals and other health and social care settings\, as well as com
mercial companies\, in particular SMEs. Collaborations with companies from
outside the traditional medical sector (e.g. computing\, artificial intel
ligence) are welcome.\n\n\n\n	Swiss-based applicants: must be eligible for
SNSF Project Funding (see EPFL Instructions for SNSF Project Funding) and
cannot participate in more than one proposal per call. The SNSF exclusive
ly funds research conducted for non-commercial purposes. Please contact re
search@epfl.ch to verify your eligibility for the call. In case of several
overlapping SNSF projects\, all projects must significantly distinguish t
hemselves from each other.  \n\nFunding & Duration: min. CHF 50’000  a
nd max. CHF 300’000 for 12-36 months (for this call\, the SNSF has alloc
ated CHF 1M for 3-4 projects).\nTimeline of the call: \n\n\n	Deadline for
 pre-proposals: 1 March 2022 at 12:00 (noon) CET.\n	Deadline for full propo
sals: 28 June 2022 at 12:00 (noon) CET.\n\nApplications must be submitted
by the call deadlines via both the JPND online submission tool and mySNF.\
nFor further information\, please have a look at the call webpage\, call g
uidelines\, call procedures (incl. evaluation criteria and scoring)\, inst
 ructions for Swiss-based applicants\, pre-proposal template\, \, as well a
s the outcome of past calls.\n
