louds: the foundations of atomic-scale machine learning\nAbstract:\nSimula
tions of matter at the atomic scale are precious to provide a mechanistic
understanding of chemical processes\, and to design molecules and material
s with predictive accuracy. As with many fields of science\, machine learn
ing have become an essential part of the modeling toolbox\, with many fram
eworks having become well-established\, and many more being developed in n
ew research directions.\nLately\, much effort has been dedicated to ration
alizing the relationship between models of atomic-scale properties and fun
damental physical principles\, such as symmetry\, locality\, and hierarchi
cal decompositions of the interactions between atoms.\nI will present an o
verview of the latest developments\, focusing in particular on the problem
of representing an atomic structure in a concise\, yet complete\, fashion
. I will discuss a few examples of the implications of these fundamental f
indings\, for both chemical machine learning and in general for problems t
hat require a description of three-dimensional objects in terms of point c
louds.\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\nRIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project
(AIP) which houses more than 40 research teams ranging from fundamentals
of machine learning to analysis of ethics and social impact of artificia
l intelligence collaborate with the EPFL CIS on a monthly online seminar s
eries around the topics and applications of AI.\nRIKEN is Japan’s larges
t comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in
a diverse range of scientific disciplines.\nRIKEN Center for Advanced In
telligence Project (AIP) houses more than 40 research teams ranging from
fundamentals of machine learning and optimization\, applications in medici
ne\, materials\, and disaster\, to analysis of ethics and social impact o
f artificial intelligence.\nEPFL is located in Switzerland and is one of t
he most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions. EPF
L has both a Swiss and international vocation and focuses on three mission
s: teaching\, research and innovation.\nThe Center for Intelligent System
 s (CIS) at EPFL\, a joint initiative of the schools ENAC\, IC\, SB\, STI
and SV seeks to advance research and practice in the strategic field of
 intelligent systems.
