DESCRIPTION:Prof. Paolo De Los Rios\nTitle: Exploring the sequence landsca
 pe space of proteins\n \nAbstract: Protein folding occurs spontaneously\,
  as shown to us by Anfinsen\, because the folding instructions are encoded
  in the amino-acid sequence.\nYet sequences from the same protein family f
 old to the same structure despite their sometimes-large differences\, hint
 ing at the possibility of learning. The folding rules by comparing many di
 fferent instances (think of the Rosetta stone\, which allowed understandin
 g hieroglyphs).\nConfident in the correctness of these idea\, bioinformati
 cians first\, and then physicists\, developed a series of methods to extra
 ct these rules\, culminating recently\, upon intervention of computer scie
 ntists\, in the remarkable success of AlphaFold (AF).\nAfter a brief revie
 w of the history of the methods\, I will show some pre-AF successful appli
 cations. I will then show how there is a natural convergence of deep (but 
 not necessarily so deep) learning methods and ideas from statistical mecha
 nics and how we can exploit these still simple approaches\nas a discovery 
 tool.\n\n\nThe Center for Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collabora
 tion among IC\, ENAC\, SB\; SV and STI that brings together researchers wo
 rking on different aspects of Intelligent Systems.\nIn order to promote ex
 changes among researchers and encourage the creation of new\, collaborativ
 e projects\, CIS is organizing a "Get to know your neighbors" series. Each
  seminar will consist of one short overview presentation geared to the gen
