DESCRIPTION:Dr. Liam Wotherspoon\nThe city of Christchurch and the surroun
 ding towns in the Canterbury region of New Zealand suffered significant da
 mage during the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake series. The most damaging 
 was the Mw 6.2 earthquake on the 22 February 2011\, resulting in 185 fatal
 ities and severe damage to buildings and infrastructure. A major factor in
  this damage\, and the damage in other earthquakes in the series was the s
 everity and spacial extent of liquefaction. This presentation will provide
  an overview of the liquefaction-induced damage to the region during the C
 anterbury earthquake series and the progression of damage as a result of r
 epeated liquefaction in many areas.\n\nBio: Liam Wotherspoon is the Earthq
 uake Commission Research Fellow at the University of Auckland\, New Zealan
 d. He completed his PhD jointly at the University of Auckland and Iowa Sta
 te University on a Fulbright Award. His research involves a range of earth
 quake engineering aspects\, including soil-foundation-structure interactio
 n modelling and field testing\, resilience of ports\, and geotechnical sit
 e characterisation. He was heavily involved in post-earthquake reconnaissa
 nce investigations and assessments during the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthqu
 ake sequence.
