DESCRIPTION:Ali Abur obtained his B.S. degree from Orta Doğu Teknik niver
sitesi\, Turkey and both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Ohio State Un
iversity\, Columbus\, Ohio. He was a faculty member at Texas A&M Universit
y until November 2005 when he joined the faculty of Northeastern Universit
y as a Professor and Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Depa
rtment. His research and educational activities have been in the area of p
ower systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE for his work on power system stat
e estimation. He co-authored a book and published widely in IEEE journals
and conferences.\nAbstract: This talk describes implementation of a multi-
area state estimation approach where a converged solution can be obtained
for a large part of the network even if the conventional state estimator d
oes not converge. This is accomplished by locating and isolating the area
which contains the gross error that is responsible for divergence. The tal
k will present results related to area partitioning\, network observabilit
y and the developed multi-area state estimation algorithm. A software pack
age and associated graphical user interface (GUI) developed for a large ut
ility for this purpose will be demonstrated at the end of the presentation
using different save cases provided by the utility.
