DESCRIPTION:  Prof. Philippe Rigollet\nTitle: Optimal Transport for Stati
stics and Machine Learning\n\nAbstract: Since its introduction more than t
wo centuries ago\, optimal transport has flourished into a rich mathematic
al field allowing us to draw new connections between analysis\, geometry\,
and probability. Recently\, thanks to breakneck advances on the computati
onal front\, optimal transport has enabled the development of new tools fo
r data analysis\, finding applications in a variety of fields ranging from
graphics to biology. Underlying these tools is a new machine learning par
adigm where the goal is integrate multiple data sources. This talk will il
lustrate this new paradigm in light of several applications and discuss so
me of the statistical challenges associated with it.\n\nBio: Philippe Rigo
llet is a Professor of Mathematics at MIT\, where he is also a member of t
he Statistics and Data Science Center\, a Principal Investigator at the La
boratory for Information and Decision Systems. He is also an affiliate mem
ber of the Broad Institute. He was previously an Assistant Professor at Pr
inceton and a Postdoc at Georgia Tech. He is currently on leave from MIT a
nd holds a Chair from the Fondation des Sciences Mathématiques de Paris.\
nPhilippe’s academic interests are on the mathematical aspects of data a
nd his work aims at designing methods to process complex data using geomet
ric ideas. His contributions have been recognized by a CAREER award from t
he National Science Foundation\, a Best Paper Award at the Conference on L
earning Theory\, and a Medallion Lecture at the Joint Statistical Meetings
. He is an elected Fellow of the Institute for Mathematical Statistics.\n\
nThe CIS Colloquia will take place in hybrid mode: Room TBA and by Zoom :\
nRegister in advance for this meeting: https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/regist

tems at EPFL (CIS) is a collaboration among IC\, ENAC\, SB\; SV and STI th
at brings together researchers working on different aspects of Intelligent
Systems. In June 2020\, CIS has launched its CIS Colloquia featuring invi
 ted notable speakers.\nMore info\n
